18.01.2022 Mental Health & Diabetes go hand in hand! If we are struggling with overwhelming stress, feeling lost, anxious, angry, or depressed, then our diabetes control is often collateral damage. Likewise, when we are struggling with our diabetes control our mental health can be collateral damage! So, it makes sense that when we are nurturing one, we are nurturing the other at the same time. Here are some quick ideas to nurture your mental health when living with diabetes ... Acknowledge all the things that went well if you take a good look you will find them; out of all the decisions we have to make during the day some of them will be the right ones. Stop beating yourself up you didnt ask for diabetes and you always do your best at it; remember our best looks different on different days/weeks/months/years, but it is the best we can offer at the time. Dont be alone with diabetes; find a good clinical team who are helpful for you. Seeing a counsellor can be preventative you dont have to be in a really bad way before you make an appointment to see a counsellor; it can be helpful to spend an hour with a mental health professional who understands diabetes and just debrief or offload. Self-care put activities and time in your life that bring you back to feeling like you, and make it regular; self-care is not a special treat, it is important for everyone, but especially for those of us who live with the demands of diabetes To make an appointment with our counsellor Sarah or our diabetes clinicians, call 6110 0570 or email [email protected] #nationaldiabetesweek #NDW2020 #mentalhealth #diabetesdistress #headsupdiabetes
