09.01.2022 A few notes on practicing the guitar... Here is an example of a good half hour practice session... 1. Stretch and warm up hands (5 minutes)... 2. Skills practice: scales, arpeggios, melodic patterns, chord progressions (5 minutes) 3. Purposeful practice - pick something that you want to learn and learn it (min. 10 minutes) - take small steps, focused micro-learning. 4. Relax, play something simple, let mind wander (5 minutes) 5. Stretch again: 30 second holds (5 minutes) Here are some warm up example exercises: Repeat finger patterns of 1 2 3 4 over and over in various locations on the neck. Focus on the 3 each time and placing a mental accent on it will strengthen this move without adding stress to your exercise. If your right-hand thumb is tight or sore, play a one-string open roll at medium intensity, and concentrate solely on the thumb, forcing it to remain relaxed. You are attempting to isolate certain parts mentally, but continue on as usual, physically exercising all parts equally. As you achieve success with this method, you may go one step further, and begin to isolate these areas physically, being careful never to stress the area being built up. After all, this is still the warm-up portion of your performance. Now, your left-hand exercise might be modified to 1 3 2 3 4, or 1 2 3 4 3, your right-hand exercise may increase in tempo, or you may shift your concentration to the thumb muscle, actually tightening and loosening repeatedly as you continue to play the open-string roll. By addressing your instrument in a similar manner each time you play, you are setting up a series of habitsgood habits ALSO, keep healthy through exercise & diet: swim, run, skate, play sports, self defence. jogging, eat & drink well. I hope this helps you ----
