25.01.2022 Showing off the latest piece of artwork in the new office! This one was lovingly made for me by my son, Josh, with the help of his Granny

25.01.2022 Using Colourful Semantics can really help to create great sentences. My client today was struggling to build a sentence at all, but when provided with the structure, he produced a good sentence (The one in brown), then with some support and fantastic discussion, we collaborated on the bottom sentence... and what a whopper of a sentence! He was so proud of it too! Thanks @teampobble for the great resource! #speechtherapy #expressivelanguage #sentences #colourfulsemantics #pobble365 #conversations #discussions #collaboration #coaching #teach @ Perth Hills Speech Pathology

25.01.2022 Any of my younger clients will tell you that I love "Where is the Green Sheep"... well this parody is no different! Enjoy!

24.01.2022 DLD - Developmental Language Disorder is a surprisingly common and yet invisible disorder that affects children and adults. Approximately two children in a classroom of 30 will struggle with DLD. Want to know more? Watch this video from SaLT by the Sea to find out more. Thanks to Private Speech Pathologists Association of Western Australia for sharing this great video.

22.01.2022 As I mentioned in an earlier post, DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) can impact on many aspects of a persons life. This video very clearly explains the link between DLD and Mental Health, so as it is World Mental Health Day tomorrow (10th October) and DLD Day next week (16th October), let's share this video around the world to raise awareness of both these important causes. #DLDSeeMe #devlangdis #radldambassador #WorldMentalHealthDay2020 #childrensmentalhealth

21.01.2022 A little chat about a young girl who had no confidence in her ability to say the sounds correctly, but after lots of practice with Mum, she is now giving it a go and doing a fantastic job of saying her sounds correctly. #SPweek #communicatingwithconfidence #speechsounds #phonology #speechtherapy #perthhillsspeech

17.01.2022 We combined a good Sounds-Write polysyllabic word building lesson with some discussion about the seeds that had just been planted, then created some sentences looking at how the meaning changes with the different conjunctions "because", "but" and "so". Final step was for Mr Reluctant to write the sentences... he did a great job, Im sure you will agree! #literacy #soundswrite #reading #spelling #writing #language #orallanguage #comprehension #grammar #conjunctives #communication #ifyoucantsayityoucantwriteit #speechtherapy #speechtherapist #speechiesofinstagram #perthhillsspeech #perthspeechies #roleystone @ Perth Hills Speech Pathology

17.01.2022 For those of you following the story that was started by this wonderful picture from Pobble, please have a look at the wonderful finished product here: https://www.perthhillsspeech.com/our-kids/ I am so incredibly proud of the hard work and determination that the author brought to writing this story. Making her own sentences was a VERY hard task for her and yet she was able to produce this wonderful story. Please read it and let us all know your thoughts!... Story in comments, if you want to read it there!

17.01.2022 Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a LIFELONG language disorder that a person is born with. 1 in 14 people have DLD. My favourite quote from this video "DLD isn't just a problem with language, it's a problem with living life to it's fullest". Can you see how problems with being able to communicate your thoughts or concerns, your ideas can lead to problems with mental health?... #DLDseeme #DevLangDis #DevelopmentalLanguageDisorder #MentalHealthAwareness #childrensmentalhealth #mentalhealth

16.01.2022 As we continue with Speech Pathology Week, I want to share a story with you. A little while back, a Deputy Principal contacted me and mentioned that one of the students at her school appeared to be having some trouble with learning. She mentioned that the students Mum had taken him to a variety of places to get support and help him get up to speed with his school work, but nothing seemed to be working. She mentioned that the student is a quiet child who usually gets on w...ith doing what is asked of him, however the work that he produces is not up to the same standard as the rest of his peers. She wondered if I would be able to help out. I recommended that we do a comprehensive assessment of his speech, language and literacy skills to INVESTIGATE whether there are any gaps and if there are, we can provide support and strategies to improve those areas. Today, I started my investigation. I honestly believe that this is more than just doing an assessment to see if his skills are in within normal limits. This is an investigation to find out the truth about where his difficulties are. I also want to learn what his strengths in language are as we can use those to support his difficulties. This is not a quick process but it is important and is the start of a relationship that may go on for many months to come. #speechlanguagepathologist #speechtherapy #morethansounds #SPweek #communicatingwithconfidence #speechandlanguageassessment #communicationassessment #investigate #pathologist #perthhillsspeech #perthspeechie #speechies #speechielife

14.01.2022 Friends, Family, Professionals... we need to talk... or should I say, you NEED to listen to this. Whether you know someone who has a disability or not... you MUST listen to this episode to be mindful of the off hand comments we make that can be so incredibly hurtful to someone else. Oh reflection, I have been there, I have said some terrible things not realising the damage I am causing but I am aware now and make an effort everyday to think about how my words impact other people. Please listen... if not for me, then for your friend or for your clients or patients and for the person you meet tomorrow.

12.01.2022 In light of our recent 'Speechie Library Talks', I thought I would re-share this video of using a book to have a beautiful conversation about the pictures, not just reading every word in the book.

12.01.2022 7 Facts to help you understand DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) just a little better: 1 When provided with high quality support and understanding, a person with DLD can achieve social, academic and professional success. #success 2 Learning to read relies on language skills, which are the primary problem for people with DLD. #literacymatters 3 People with DLD do not look different from their peers and it may not be immediately obvious #invisibledisability 4 A pe...rson with DLD has difficulties with language not intelligence. #language 5 The development of all language spoken by a person with DLD will be affected #bilingual #multilingual 6 Although developing language is the primary difficulty, DLD can often occur with challenges in other areas of development. #developement 7 Research indicates adolescents benefit from specialised support to develop their language skills. #nevertoolate #DLDSeeMe #devlangdis #developmentallanguagedisorder #speechpathology #learning #literacy #childrensmentalhealth #mentalhealth #confidence #children #adolescents

11.01.2022 Do you know a child who struggles to get their words out? Maybe the words are always on the tip of their tongue, but just not quite there? Do you know a child who has been called "the quiet one"... in my experience, there is usually a reason why they are quiet (and its not because they are shy). If a name springs to mind... do the child a favour and start a convsersation with a speech therapist now.... #SPWeek #speechpathaus #SpeakUp4CommRights #communication #SLPeeps #slp2b #slt #slt2b #slp #slpbloggers #language #soeech #voice #speechpathology #speechtherapy #signlanguage #disability #NDIS #speechie #speechielife #perthspeechie #disabiltyawareness #abilitynotdisability #empower #parentcoaching

11.01.2022 Approximately 60% of children with ADHD will also have Developmental Language Disorder. There are many other children who have reduced language capabilities that would not be diagnosed as DLD. Get your child assessed for a language difficulty - there are many strategies that can be put in place for your child and language outcomes can be improved significantly with speech therapy. #DLDSeeMe #devlangdis #ADHD #ADHDAwareness #perthhillsspeech

06.01.2022 Today, whilst discussing idioms... Oh how we laughed!!!

06.01.2022 This is the difference that speech therapy can make with a little person. This is good timing, seeing its Speech Pathology Week! Dont get me wrong, it has been a long road, but in 18 months, this is the change. Early Intervention has made an incredible difference and now we are getting comments from his teacher, wondering why he has been going to Speech Therapy, since he is talking so well! During speech therapy, we started by doing the wonderful It Takes Two To Talk prog...ram from The Hanen Centre, followed by some specific work on sentence structure and grammar and also phonological awareness skills. You will be interested to know that we did not work on his pronunciation because his speech clarity was affected by his limited expressive language, not his ability to produce sounds. #speechtherapy #communicatewithconfidence #SPweek #speechtherapist #progress #earlyintervention #speechlanguagepathologist #perthspeechies #perthspeechpathologist #perthhillsspeech Speech Pathology Australia

06.01.2022 Earlier today, in my LIVE video, I announced that Perth Hills Speech Pathology will be running the It Takes Two to Talk Parenting Program from The Hanen Centre as a group for the first time in 2021. You are invited to an Orientation Session to learn more about the program. Please book your tickets through the link on the event.

04.01.2022 Another three facts about DLD for you to understand it even more... 8 DLD impacts people all over the world and from all socio-economic backgrounds. #worldwide 9 Despite the high prevalence, the exact cause of DLD remains unknown. It can run in families and be influenced by genetics. #genetics DLD is a lifelong condition. Even though it may not be recognised, adults can have DLD too. #lifelong ... #DLDSeeMe #devlangdis #developmentallanguagedisorder #languagedevelopment #speechpathology

04.01.2022 Oh yes please! I couldnt agree with this more.

03.01.2022 Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a lifelong condition that impacts on a person's language skills. When we think of language, we often think about the language that we speak, i.e. English or Italian... BUT... it's a LOT more than that. In short, language is The ability to understand a message (spoken, written, gestured, pictured) given to us by another person The ability to put our thoughts across to another person (using speech, writing, pictures, gestures or wh...atever other means) A person who has DLD has difficulties with one or both of these parts of language in varying degrees. These are just a few of the ways DLD can impact on a person: learning literacy numeracy friendships emotional wellbeing conversations confidence #DLDSeeMe #DevLangDis #DevelopmentalLanguageDisorder #childrensmentalhealth #literacy #numeracy #friendships #emotionalwellbeing #confidence #conversations #friends #mentalhealth #speechpathology RADLD - Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder
