24.01.2022 Lifted the lid in a #nucleus #beecolony last week to see how the girls are doing. What you see here is #burrcomb being built into the lid. While this extra #beeswax #honeycomb is not a problem for the bees, this makes it a bit more difficult for the #beekeeper to lift the lid off, and is a good sign that the #bees need more space. For their efforts these girls scored themselves an upgrade to one of our new #paradisehoneybeeboxes which should give them a little more room to gr...ow and provide some added warmth for the #winter. 24.01.2022 Someone tell this hive that its Winter! Were happy with the progress our bees are making in these #paradisehoneybeehives . The extra insulation means the queen is laying eggs in the #honeycomb cells further out toward the edge of the frames. ... Because the eggs and larvae need to be kept warm, normally in Winter the bees have the eggs predominantly in the middle of the frames, keeping them near the warmer centre of the hive. It cant quite be seen here, but there are actually some eggs in the very bottom row of cells on the frame. This indicates that the hive is nice and warm and toasty, allowing the bees to raise new bees more efficiently. 23.01.2022 So to answer our question from yesterday; it was just scouts checking out the swarm trap. About 30 minutes after posting that video, we heard a loud noise and then a cloud of bees descended upon us. Thousands of bees enveloped the area and then congested on the swarm trap. Within about 5 minutes the majority of the bees were inside the box, and they are now making it their home.... This colony has started to slow down for the winter, but they still have a good amount of young brood coming through and a decent amount of #honey stored up. 05.01.2022 Heads down bumps up! One of our employees cleans a #honeycomb cell while another can be seen carrying a big bundle of #pollen around the #hive. All bees have their allocated jobs, progressing through to different roles as they get older. ... Most of the girls in this pic are young bees who are still on home duties for their first 3 weeks or so until they graduate to become forager bees. For now they will clean and tidy cells ready for the queen bee to lay eggs in, and they tend to and feed the young bee larvae. Because shes still a fluffy little lady, we assume that the bee carrying the pollen is just a young bee who is moving pollen around the hive, as opposed to a forager who is bringing the pollen home.
