25.01.2022 THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FLEA/TICK TREATMENTS! There are a million and one reasons I would never apply, or feed my Dog/Cat insecticides ie flea and tick treatments. The latest information to find its way to our desk is in regard to what these insecticides are doing to the planet... it truly is horrendous!... Prof Dave Goulson: The problem is, these chemicals are so potent, he said, even at tiny concentrations. We would expect them to be having significant impacts on insect life in rivers. One flea treatment of a medium-sized dog with imidacloprid contains enough pesticide to kill 60 million bees... . The researchers said the blanket use of flea treatments should be discouraged and that new regulation is needed. Currently, the flea treatments are approved without an assessment of environmental damage. Scientists have identified that Pet flea treatments are poisoning rivers across England - this discovery is ‘extremely concerning’ for water insects, and fish and birds that depend on them... https://www.theguardian.com//pet-flea-treatments-poisoning In addition: The FDA is alerting pet owners and veterinarians of the potential for neurologic adverse events in dogs and cats when treated with drugs that are in the isoxazoline class : FDA Statement - https://www.fda.gov//fact-sheet-pet-owners-and-veterinaria Peer-Reviewed Paper: Out of the 2,751 respondents: When any flea treatment (Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica) was given to dogs, 66.6% of respondents experienced a REACTION to the treatment! https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/vms3.285

24.01.2022 FOR OUR GERMAN SHEPHERD FAMILIES... This is what our Dogs were originally bred to do... German Shepherds are a Boundary Dog, not a herder per se hence their role was to keep the sheep retained within a non-fenced area, to keep them off the crops and to protect them from predators...... If you’ve watched a true herder i.e. Border Collie, Kelpie etc, you will see that this is a very different style - sometimes referred to as a moving fence! Truly beautiful to watch! https://www.facebook.com/100003904534067/posts/1948757338597732/?

17.01.2022 PETS ARE FOREVER! The Covid period created an additional demand for Dogs Already rescue organisations are citing an increase in ‘returns’... ... if only we could get through to humans that Dogs are not like a shirt that you buy, get it home, don’t like it, it doesn’t fit and we take it back... But we keep trying!

13.01.2022 APPROACHING ‘BOLSHY’ DOGS One of the many common problems that we deal with is Dogs that jump up on people... visitors, people they pass on the street etc etc... The problem is, very often, while some people might not enjoy this at all, others reward the behaviour!...Continue reading

11.01.2022 CHRISTMAS TREATS FOR DOGS... PLEASE BE CAREFUL and CHOOSE A HEALTHY and SAFE OPTION ! A warning regarding the treats many stores stock for Dogs throughout the year, but especially at Christmas that many of us see as ‘healthy’!... Many of these (so called) ‘treats’ end up with your Dog spending time at the Vets! The vast majority of these rawhide products/treats are imported from China. They are loaded with chemicals and NOTHING that will be beneficial to your Dog’s wellbeing... These so-called ‘Rawhide’ chews are a byproduct of the leather industry. Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers. What remains is washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white ‘pure’ look and to remove the rancid smell. Colours and glue are used to mould them into shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde! They are well known to be the cause of intestinal blockages, poisoning (from chemical residue) and choking. The chews are slippery (slimey) when wet, and are impossible to grip to save a choking Dog. Please, leave them in the shop, and if some well-meaning person buys them for your Dog put them safely in the bin!

10.01.2022 THIS HERE... Wins the prize of the most disturbing image I have seen - EVER! Warning: once seen will not be unseen...... Heartbreaking! This is very often what happens when people gift an animal... Animals are NOT GIFTS! Please share... If we save just one Dog, Cat, Rabbit or Mouse, we have made a difference! Thank you

04.01.2022 DOGS and SNIFFING As we know, the dogs olfactory senses are very finely tuned... If you have ever been amazed as I am at a Dogs ability to detect various scents, I think you will find this video extremely informative... ... https://youtu.be/eo2sdckSMMA

02.01.2022 DEVELOPING YOUR PUPPY When raising a Puppy, you have a finite window during which your Puppy will learn the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviours... To NOT establish boundaries/structure for example during these periods of time is an UNkindness ... A Dog, being a hierarchal being, NEEDS to know what is required of them to live in this human world! It’s up to us to teach him, just like his mother would had he stayed with her... This video by one of our favourites, Michael Ellis, is a good start in your research into this topic... https://youtu.be/B4OsRZI6D5s

01.01.2022 GREYHOUNDS We’ve worked with numerous rescue Greyhounds What we see on the whole is a Dog that is broken ... Yes, there may be physical injuries but what we see is a Dog with a broken spirit!! They are typically fearful, and as a result anxious and in many cases, aggressive - towards both humans (even those wanting to help them) and other Dogs... Sonia Stratemann, from Loxahatchee Groves, Florida, has rescued more than 2,500 greyhounds! Many of the Dogs came with injuries, including broken backs and legs! However in order to be permitted to rescue these Dogs - Dogs that had been exploited for the ‘sport’, she had to abide by the unspoken rules, which included not going public with what she saw! Thankfully the truth is coming out as to just how these Dogs are mistreated! I’m sure many people in the industry have a great affection for their Dogs but it’s a business that comes down to whether they are the winning, or they are not! I’m sure even the most caring people become hardened to it after awhile... THE FACTS: - Racing greyhounds spend long hours (most of their lives in fact) in confinement in their crates. - They are handled infrequently, and really only get out on the track for training... and if they good enough, racing. - They don’t know how to be a Dog because they have never interacted with other Dogs, nor with people... they are ‘handled’ and that is the extent of it... hence they have no idea how to respond when given freedom! They have after all had zero contact with the ‘real’ world Their world is a crate and the track That’s it!! - When it is revealed that they can’t run fast enough, they are discarded like an unwanted and out of date shirt! If you are considering adopting a Greyhound, and that’s a wonderful thing, you must go into this with your eyes wide open, knowing the potential for issues and having a very realistic understanding of the life they are leaving behind... They are a wonderful, gentle natured Dog, like all other Dogs But they are a product of their genetics and their conditioning/environment! With Greyhound racing coming to an end in the US, Sonia is focusing her efforts on saving in Dogs in China, including Dogs in the meat trade! We humans really are a despicable creature!!!
