25.01.2022 Tribute Post I normally wouldn't interrupt my feed to discuss a celebrity death but I'm making an exception for Chadwick Boseman, aka the Black Panther. I'm shocked and deeply saddened to learn that the man who brought to life (arguably) the most important @marvelstudios superhero passed away from cancer yesterday. .... In light of the #blacklivesmatter movement the loss of Chadwick right now is particularly devastating. How could it be? How could someone who brought so much to the movement be taken from the world at this point in time? And at just 43 years of age . Chadwick Boseman as King T'Challa (aka the Black Panther) is more than any other actor-character portrayal you will ever see. I am heartbroken for all the little boys (and girls, and adults) out there who are feeling the loss of the hero they waited so long for. I say this because it is impossible to imagine anyone other than Chadwick playing Black Panther. With Chadwick gone, it is easy to feel that everything that Black Panther did to level the playing field, has been undone. When I take a step back I see a social media community doing many different things. Since March, most of us have acknowledged the pandemic and have since tried to move on. The challenge for most of us now is keeping our businesses afloat whilst trying to keep ourselves and our customers safe. . There will always be businesses who manage to breeze through an economic... recession or depression, or at least they will claim that they are. The reality is that these business have much more skin in the game than we know about. Basically, the scale is just tilted in their favour. . These are tough times and the business world is changing irrevocably. Don't feel like you are failing simply because your output isn't what it was this time last year. 24.01.2022 I'm still far from over making buttercream flower cakes. While probably not as visually stunning as fresh flowers, I love that buttercream flowers are edible and there's no waste! Imported blooms have really sky-rocketed in cost since the coronavirus pandemic started, and I find it hard to justify putting them on a cake, particularly as once removed from the cake, the blooms tend to go in the bin For piping roses, I tend to find the easiest substance to use is Swiss meringu...e buttercream. I'm 100% self taught; and with the exception of the odd video popping up in my Instagram feed (which I always scroll past because ADHD) I've never even watched a tutorial video. Subsequently my roses don't look the same as most of the piped flowers you see. Also, I taught myself with royal icing so SMBC is easy peasy in comparison. Finally, piping tips: Unlike with the piping of swirls, I find that Wilton, Loyal, Ateco etc are not the best. For piping buttercream flowers, THE best piping tips are those no-brand stainless steel ones you get on eBay for about 20c each. These cheap tips make the most realistic (and perfectly imperfect) flowers in my opinion. That said, for piping teeny tiny royal icing blooms, I always use the Wilton specialty tips. 23.01.2022 Hiya, me again I have something to share which I hope you can take the time to read . Have you noticed the talk about #raisetheage ? . In Western Australia and most states of Australia, children as young as 10 can be charged with a crime.... . Children as young as 10 years old can be held in police custody and sent to juvenile prison. . When I studied law, I did some additional research into an aspect of law known as Mandatory Sentencing. . Mandatory Sentencing, aka the 3 Strikes law, means that a judge/magistrate has no choice but to send a child to prison, if it is the 3rd time in which that child has been charged with a certain offence. . I don't advocate shoplifting, obviously, but I do know that children of all skin colours occasionally do things like steal chocolate bars and lollies when they don't have the money to buy them. Sometimes kids do these things for a thrill. . I'm not saying it's right - of course it isn't - but I am saying that most kids who shoplift outgrow this behaviour without criminal intervention. .. When I was in high school, there were groups of white kids who would shoplift cans of spray paint from Bunnings. Those kids have grown up to work in jobs like Real Estate agents and bank managers. One of them is a lawyer. Everyone knew these kids were stealing; so why did they not end up in the criminal justice system? . Because they were white. . Mandatory sentencing targets Aboriginal kids. These kids are targeted by store security because of their race, then mercilessly interrogated and charged by police. Shamefully, the police and courts do not drop the charges or dismiss the cases, despite knowing their hardline stance creates criminals and leads to youth suicide. Because of mandatory sentencing, judges have no choice but to send children to jail for things like receiving a Freddo Frog - 80c worth of chocolate. Because of mandatory sentencing, children like orphan Johnno Warramarrba who tried to steal pencils and stationary so that he can "fit in" in school, have been sent to abhorrent detention centres like Don Dale. Within days of being imprisoned, Johnno took his own life. He was 15. #raisetheage #realtalk #blm

23.01.2022 When I started Bouchée Amour two years ago I quickly fell for the Hustle Non Stop mentality. Everything in my life revolved around my business, and I convinced myself that things that weren't business related weren't worth doing. 2020 has taught me just how toxic that mentality is. When a person is fixated only on hustling and earning, they lose touch with reality and are no longer in a position to positively contribute to the broader community. It's hard to feel privileged w...hen we're all experiencing a small drop in income, but as residents of Western Australia with white skin, it is important to remember that we are among the most privileged people of the world right now. If anything, the small drop in workload or income should be seen as an opportunity to step back and look at what we can do for those less fortunate than ourselves. As the saying goes, with great privilege comes great responsibility. If you are looking to use the time to give back to society, then really challenge yourself. Look not to the not-for-profits that exist to benefit already privileged people, but to the organisations who do the real nitty gritty stuff. The biggest issues in the world right now are climate change, racism and poverty, but these are also very real issues facing Western Australians. Get involved with small-scale organisations who exist to tackle these issues on a local basis. Or if you honestly don't have time for that, then you can use your social media to spread positive messages for social and environmental change. Every single day is an opportunity to do something to make the world a better place. 21.01.2022 If there's one thing that can be said of First Birthday parties, it's that they are stressful. The person responsible for carrying the stress is almost always the mother. As a mum, I remember my kids' first birthday cakes well. I remember the pressure I put on myself and I remember how neither my daughter's nor son's first birthday cakes were half way close to anything I felt proud of. I wasn't a cake decorator back then... I cringe a little thinking back on those early 1st b...irthday cakes . This towering 2 tier cake is for a big 1st Birthday tomorrow. I had intended to give it a bit more of a waterfall effect with the buttercream roses, but made the judgment not to overload it because the cake turned out a fair bit taller than intended. 18.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who entered the flash giveaway yesterday. I bet you're all a bit sick of seeing this mini cake (sorrryyy!) but I just wanted to let you know the process for how I picked the winner. First up, there was no app or software to draw a winner based on the entry criteria (I learned this a bit too late) and so I spent last night trawling through all the comments, stories and posts and sticking all your names manually into MS Excel! Some people had up to... 9 entries because of posting to stories and feed. It was quite a process Very old school right? I then entered a formula (RANDBETWEEN) and the randomly selected winner was @krissysfoodadventures ! Anyway, here's the thing.. I've decided that I'm going to save the spreadsheet of all your names and whenever I next have a spare box of macarons or extra cake, I'll whack in the formula again to draw out another winner! It will be a blind giveaway (if that's a thing?) type of deal and there will be multiple per month. The selection process is 100% random but everyone who has already won a prize will have their name removed from the Blind giveaway entry pool just so that things are fair. I love and appreciate you all and wish you the safest, happiest, and most blessed Christmas and New Year ever. I realise though that the reality for so many is that no matter how hard I wish, these people are unlikely to experience the "safest, happiest and most bless Christmas ever". It's been a tough year for so many. But given how fortunate I feel to be a resident of Western A...ustralia, it is a great feeling to be able to use Christmas 2020 as a time to give back. I therefore cannot wait to finalise an amount to donate to a charity called Operation H.O.P.E in El Paso, Texas. This non-profit does so much valuable community work and in response to the Coronavirus crisis is helping provide funeral funds to families who've lost loved ones to Covid but can't afford a funeral. Yep, we've taken the WA government's seriously cheesy but well-intentioned call to "Wander Out Yonder" pretty seriously and planned a BANGER of a roadtrip across this sacred WA land these school holidays. We're doing Perth to Meekatharra, then Mount Augustus, Hamelin Pool and Denham, with everywhere in between. ... 14.01.2022 Telling the Truth and Owning it Just like every place in Australia which was seized from the First Peoples during the colonisation process, Carnarvon has a painful history. But what you probably don't know about this remote town in the Gascoyne is that it is leading the way for Indigenous truth telling and reconciliation in Australia.... Whitlock Island station is an abandoned tram station connecting Carnarvon to Whitlock and Babbage islands, which in turn lead to the famous One Mile Jetty. This station represents an important piece of Carnarvon's heritage, and an equally important place of recognition for the horrific acts of persecution and dehumanisation inflicted on the Indigenous peoples of Western Australia by the colonisers. Since 1788 Aboriginal people in Australia have been viewed as a problem for governments. Murder and violent dispossession were accepted in the early days, but by 1900 more 'humane' methods were needed. In the early 1900's, the main options the leaders of Australia had to deal with the Aboriginal "problem" were: force Aboriginal people to become white (i.e. learn to obey what white people told them to do and intermarry to produce "less Aboriginal" children); outright remove any half-caste children from their families so that they could grow up according to Western norms; send them to a place where they were "out of sight, out of mind" such as the middle of Australia; lock them up for the smallest suspicion of a crime and send them to work on stations/farms lock them up on medical grounds, such as venereal disease infection. These diseases, of course, would not have made their way into Aboriginal communities if white settlers had not raped Aboriginal women to begin with. I'm going to talk about the last option - a dark part of our history known as the Lock Hospital era - starting at Whitlock Island . Now I'm not going to lie; it was quite scary coming back from Covid and reopening the market stall. A lot of work involved in becoming market-ready again. . So glad we did it though. The whole thing ran smoother than pre-Covid, actually. Such a good feeling to be back. May the First Nations children of this country grow up knowing how valued and needed they are by our society. May they be proud of their heritage and may we as a nation continue to work towards building a society where First Nations children can thrive . There is no question that Aboriginal children have to overcome a lot more obstacles in life than their white and non-Aborigi...nal peers. Days like NATSI children's day are necessary in order to help level the playing field and to ensure Blak* kids feel valued by society. This day is also important because it encourages white kids to appreciate and feel connected to the ancient, enduring & fascinating heritage of our country. We say it all the time but we just love Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture! While this culture is for everyone to enjoy, because of the inequality in our society and painful history, non-Aboriginal people must not try to recreate Aboriginal art or culture for their own gain. This includes Aboriginal painting styles. The flag on the other hand, is for anyone to use respectfully. Alas, I don't want to talk about the oceanic kind of wave right now. I want to talk about the King Wave of Coronavirus currently terrorising our friends in Victoria and killing a lot of its precious elders and vulnerable people. Look I'm sorry I didn't say something sooner. I, like the rest of Austalians outside Victoria,... have been a bit selfish. And while it's ok to want to keep ourselves safe, there is definitely a lot more that we can and should be doing to support our brothers and sisters in Victoria and the other covid hotspots around Australia. The experts are telling us that the people in those locations need to be wearing a face mask in public. The LAW is telling them they must be wearing a face mask. It's unbelievably depressing that so many people are just not following this direction. It's unbelievably depressing that so many people are just refusing to mask up. If you're Australian I'm asking you to show your support for your fellow citizens and post a picture of yourself wearing a mask with the hashtag #maskupforvictoria.
