16.01.2022 Shoulder pain - older paddler? It is likely that restricted thoracic rotation and extension will be implicated. I have never seen an older paddler with shoulder pain who does not have significant thoracic stiffness. Generally people think they are rotating well but it is your shoulder blades and shoulder joints that are compensating with extra movement for a stiff thoracic spine. For people paddling craft with deep seats ( skis) this is accentuated.... Pre existing thoracic stiffness in the older paddler will not change with 2-3 minutes stretching every other day - it needs a lot of work and then backed up with the ability of the trunk to actively reach and hold your best rotation. Without good thoracic mobility you also will try and compensate to generate force by arm pull rather than trunk twist. And don't forget to breathe when you are doing your thoracic mobility work! You have 2 ribs that need to move also!

15.01.2022 Special Ski Regatta - PromoHear from some of WA's finest paddlers about why they're keen for the upcoming ski regatta.

14.01.2022 Maintaining foot pressure through the stroke till the completed exit is a crucial component of improving your distance per stroke. Differences exist due to various ski footwell designs/peddle design and kayak footplates. There are a number of mechanical factors that may affect your ability to maintain foot pressure. Assessing these on an ergo and then practicing new movement patterns off water first, is a good way to work on the next stage of improving your paddling. If this is something you want to assess - just call for an appointment time 92464066

13.01.2022 If you have just started paddling and can balance in a boat - you may be confused by all the tips about how to paddle ie technique - and asking what are the most important pieces of the puzzle to help your progression. After watching people and teaching beginners for many years - the following 5 pieces of information are the most important to progress to your next stage of development. They can all be practiced in front of a mirror at home with a paddling stick. Keep it simp...le and get these things right first. Key baseline skills 1. Sit up tall - view side on - knees approx 30 - 50 degrees bent. 2. Learn to get weight onto your feet without collapsing your back - have your feet against something when you sit up and pivot forward at your hips with a straight back to get weight onto your feet. Check side on in the mirror 3. Keep the stroke in front of your body - reach forward t the catch and then exit before your hip - check side on in mirror. 4.Don't let front hand cross over the mid line - check front on in mirror 5. Keep your top front hand at a constant eye height - don't let it drop.Check front on and side on in the mirror. Practicing these 5 key baseline parameters off water with visual feedback, helps develop the correct paddling pattern that can then be refined as you develop further. If you have trouble in achieving or understanding these - give me a call - 92464066

10.01.2022 Are you working on line from home? How is your computer set up at home? With many people working from home, away from their usual computer desk set up, perha...ps using laptops or tablets around the house more than usual, it is important to set yourself optimally. As with athletes any sudden increase in time spent in a different activity may lead to soft tissue or postural overload. This is relevant especially if you have had past issues with your neck, shoulder, elbow or arm symptoms. Here at MTM Physiotherapy Duncraig we are available for Telehealth consults to help you to both optimise your working positions and advise on movement activity in these new environments, to help prevent or alleviate developing symptoms. Telehealth bookings can be made via a phone call to the clinic 92464066 or by booking directly on line with your usual therapist. . . . . . @purzlbaum #physio #physiotherapy #physiorehab #fitness #mtmphysio #workout #journey #pilates #reformerpilates #treatment #madetomove #duncraig #exerciseideas #wellness #success #management #rehab #sports #physiotherapist #perth #treatment #health #fitness #makinglifebetter #motivation #perthfitfam #studio #injury #prevention

09.01.2022 Australian sport has lost one of its finest coaches and ambassadors with the passing of Nick Garratt yesterday. His knowledge, friendship, his loyalty and support for athletes in the competitive environment and their lives and welfare afterwards, will never be forgotten. A wise coach who guided young people through the chaos and politics that is elite sport. He cared for the person as much as for the result. He was magnificent photographer that showed his eye for natural beau...ty. He was a humanist. He would want nothing more than to be remembered as "a good bloke" - and that he was - a fine Australian - and a role model for all in the coaching fraternity that knew him.
