13.01.2022 Humidity and Plants What is Humidity? Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. ...Well that's obvious ... But why is it important with my plants? A lot of plants we purchase here in Australia originated from countries like Thailand, Indonesia and South America. These countries naturally have a higher humidity. Perth's average humidity sits around 52%, where as Thailand sits around 66-79%. So why is humidity important in plants? A Monstera Deliciosa for example has thin leaves. The leaves have tiny pores on them to allow for uptake of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. When these pores open to 'breathe', water can evaporate from the leaves. So in a dryer climate, more water will be lost during this process. This can lead to dehydration (Adding excess water to the roots can lead to decrease air around the roots and root rot). So it is essential to get the right humidity for plant to thrive. What Plants NEED higher humidity? (~60-80%) Think thin leaves Aglaonemas Alocasias Calatheas Anthuriums Orchids Ferns (i.e birds nest, stag horn, boston...) Fatsia Japonica (Paper plant) Zebra Plants (... avoid...they hate life...dont do it...) Dracaena What plants like higher humidity? Most of these plants can tolerate a lower humidity, however will thrive with a higher humidity. Monsteras Peace Lily Dumb canes Air plants Spider plants Ficus Syngoniums Devils Ivy Crotons Hoyas (If you do use a humidifier, air flow and temperature control is important to prevent mold in your house and fungus infections on your plants) How do I increase the humidity? There are a few methods from easy to medium amount of effort required. Easy: Group plants together to increase humidity Mist leaves regularly with a spray bottle Place plants in the bathroom or laundry Pebble tray (place rocks on a tray and fill with water. Place plant on top of rocks, making sure the water is not touching the plant. As the water evaporates, it increase the humidity to the plant) Depending on size of plant - you can cover with a glass jar or place in plastic bag/ziplock Medium effort: Purchase a plastic greenhouse and mist Purchase a humidifier and/or hygrometer. purchase a grow tent to help control environmental factors Hope that helps and leaf a comment below if you find this helpful or have any tips to share
