25.01.2022 Survey responses Thanks to all of you who took the time to read the brochure and to complete and return the survey- 143 so far. There is no end date all responses will be counted, due to the unexpected lateness of its arrival in mail boxes. Data compiled will be passed on to the relevant government agency. One small request: if you consider that receiving information is important, or that an email database would have been triggered by the first survey, please provide an email address or other contact to enable us to respond . To those who already do all of your pest control, thank you.
25.01.2022 It is interesting that ten people came to the midday meeting, and four to the 5:30pm meeting, yet 46 people happily chatted with us at the newsagent site on Friday. What we learned from them is that once they hear about the declared pest problem, people want to deal with it, and they are prepared to pay for it- the question is, how much do we raise? From 3 events this month, 63% are happy to pay a DPR. What do you say?
25.01.2022 ABC South West radio interviewed Mrs Barton last week. I love her motto - "never give up!"
24.01.2022 Latest news from Warren Biosecurity Inc: the board meets on Tuesday 15th of December, to decide how to proceed. 159 surveys have been input and analysed so far, with a few late ones to be added. Further announcements will be made soon!
23.01.2022 Note, there are 2 event times for Pemberton- 12 noon, and 5:30 pm See you there!
23.01.2022 Congratulations! What a marvellous initiative by the SSAA to support Mens Health. The Red Card community shoots are a great way to bring people together in a common cause, and to reduce one of the burdens in rural life which causes ill health - feral animal damage. Keep an eye out for an event in your area.
22.01.2022 Were receiving many reports of rabbits in town blocks, and where rabbits go, foxes follow. If youd like to join the movement to control feral animals and protect food production, get in touch. And keep an eye out for our workshops on control methods and resources - starting in August.
22.01.2022 Talk to DPIRD's experts in pest control in Manjimup, Wellness & Respite Centre, sessions at 12 noon and 5:30pm, 12th August. Hear more about the Declared Pest Rate and an operations plan for coordinated pest controls in the Warren region.
22.01.2022 There is a lot to think about on this issue. Keep the discussion going.
20.01.2022 What a terrific post! Thanks for sharing.
19.01.2022 You could be seeing (or hearing) more foxes lately as breeding occurs between June and October. You know what that means - more young foxes. If you have been im...pacted by foxes or have seen them in your local area the PHBG can support you in control activities like trapping, baiting, shooting and exclusion fencing. Cage and soft jaw traps can be loaned FREE of charge to landholders within the PHBG operational area and landholders can be connected with local shooters where appropriate. Restricted chemical permit application fees and products can be subsidised with the PHBG helping landholders navigate the application process. Email [email protected] or phone 0474 242 223 for more information. Even if you haven't been impacted by foxes by helping to control them you are relieving the pressure on local farmers, poultry owners and local native wildlife. Thanks to a local landholder for sharing this video. Record feral animal activity using the FeralScan App.
15.01.2022 Hi folks, there 2 sessions on Wednesday, 12 noon and 5:30pm.
15.01.2022 These people may be on to something! I'm sure that even feral and stray cats cannot resist a perfect box. Do you have a great idea for catching feral cats? (keep it seemly, this is a family page)
15.01.2022 This little bandicoot survives in a town park, even in the presence of foxes and cats.
14.01.2022 If you see koi in a stream near you, please report it to DPIRD.
13.01.2022 Another great initiative from a community group!
13.01.2022 Felixer is getting good results with targeted control of feral cats, allowing much more confidence that our native animals are not harmed, and in fact are benefitting noticeably from its use. We'd like to trial some here, in the southern forests. They are pricey, and therefore, your help to buy some (4, to be precise) would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like to be a part of this new trial, please get in touch with us by message or phone 08 9771 8180. Thanks!

09.01.2022 We have been working tirelessly to eradicate the damaging pest Queensland Fruit Fly (Qfly), after it was detected in several of Perths western suburbs in March... this year. Our eradication program is now escalating with the Quarantine Area being expanded north of Dalkeith, Nedlands and Claremont, and parts of five additional suburbs Mount Claremont, Shenton Park, Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove and Crawley. The area has been increased due to Qfly detections close to the existing Quarantine Area border. The expansion provides the best chance to halt the spread of Qfly by deploying lure traps, implementing effective fruit disposal, and restricting the movement of fruit across a larger area. Movement requirements apply to citrus, avocado, mango and passionfruit, and fruiting vegetables including tomato, capsicum and eggplant. If Qfly managed to escape further out into the Metropolitan area it threatens the States status as being free of Qfly, leading to the loss of lucrative export markets. To protect our horticultural industries, do not take Qfly host fruit out of the Quarantine Area. If you have friends and family in the area, spread the word! 09.01.2022 Feral pigs are enjoying plenty of tucker in the southern forests, too. If you see any, please call us or DPIRD urgently. It may be possible for a licensed pest management technician to respond immediately. 0897718180
08.01.2022 Prevention is always better than a cure. Russian wheat aphid is a new potential threat, which can be managed for eradication. Read more here; https://www.agric.wa.gov.au//russian-wheat-aphid-productio and remember, if you think you may have found one, call your DPIRD (DAFWA) office asap. Thanks for your vigilance.
08.01.2022 Mrs Maureen Barton is a local legend. She still manages to hand pull weeds on her 10 acres (~5 hectares) where the Warren river passes by. If you are not impressed (and though a lady never tells her age), Mrs Barton is on the plus side of 80! A meticulous record keeper, she can also tell us exactly how many, and of which species she has removed from her land since moving in. For example, in 1986 she removed 9,250 saffron thistles, and by 1997 had reduced them to just 114 ... a total of 25,233 all by hand! How does she do it? At first, Mrs Barton would kneel on the ground, and day by day work her way through the paddock. Now she uses her trusty weed gadget to pluck out any new weeds which pop up after a vehicle has been in the paddock, or is dropped by animals. Still not impressed? Already well known for her work with the Manjimup branch of CWA, she has written a book about her friends, and what they have achieved since 1937. Here is a plug for that book! Methinks I have no excuses for not weeding the roses. Mrs Barton - Legend! See more
07.01.2022 Following public consultations in Manjimup, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole, and face to face feedback, the majority of land owners support proposed pest control activity & a declared pest rate to fund it effectively. Feedback suggest $50 per annum is desirable, with all property owners included, and employ staff to maximise support for landowner control efforts. Do you agree? These events are an opportunity to influence the final document. AGM 13th October. For more in...formation, contact Josephine Mead 08 9771 8180 #feralcontrol #communitycontrol #haveyoursay #weedcontrol
06.01.2022 You never know when these skills will come in handy All are welcome to tap into this 2 session for all or part of the time. Cheers.
06.01.2022 What a great idea! How many hobby farmers want, or can afford their own weed wiper? Here is a chance to ecomomise by sharing.
04.01.2022 Its another great job from our quarantine and fisheries officers who this time managed to swoop on 40-kilograms of live European Shore crabs found in a freight... consignment at Perth Airport. European shore crabs, known as the noxious listed Carcinus maenas are a highly invasive species, which if found a way into our waterways and environment, could outcompete native species for food and habitat. The crabs, imported from the eastern states, were intended to go into the retail and restaurant trade. They have now been destroyed and ongoing investigations will now be carried out to find out how they made their way into WA. Our Quarantine WA team work hard to maintain WAs excellent biosecurity status by preventing the introduction of exotic plant and animal pests and diseases from entering WA. While our Fisheries officers work in the field to ensure fishers comply with the various rules and regulations that govern both commercial and recreational fishing in WA. If you suspect aquatic pests or diseases to please report them to our Fishwatch service on 1800 815 507.
04.01.2022 Feral foxes and cats snapped in urban reserve. A project by Southern Forests Community Landcare (through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program) conducted in 2018 and 2019 used motion sensor cameras to find out who was visiting at night. They found quendas (bandicoots) among other marsupials, and also European Red Fox and domestic cats visiting the same sites. They are creatures of habit, as you can see by the graphs: compare the 2018 graphs with 2019, when our shire trapped and removed foxes. It works! Thanks to SFCL for showing us.
03.01.2022 Shire of Manjimup councillors support the work of Warren Biosecurity in the southern forests, and so do ratepayers (65%). The strength of this model of funding is that the local community decides how the money is spent (on private land), and according to local priorities by people who are used to managing on a shoestring. So, Declared pest ratepayers can expect streamlined, coordinated action in collaboration with government agencies. Though DBCA (Dept conservation) could do with loads more funding, they can now coordinate pest control across tenure to reduce ad hoc efforts and increase effective outcomes. I, for one, finally feel like we have control. You are welcome to join us.
03.01.2022 Invasive pests are costing food production and related industries, and therefore those who eat food, millions of dollars each year. The responsibility for controlling pests sits with all of us, and we aim to support Warren residents with the resources they need to do it. A Declared Pest Rate is a way for landholders to fund sustained pest control. Our meetings are a way to have your say. Join us!
02.01.2022 Following 9 consultation events, 3 promotional stalls and 2 radio interviews since July, Warren Biosecurity wishes to invite you to our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 13th October (click on the image). Apart from electing officers, we will confirm the declared pest rate and operations plan showing how those funds would be spent on private land where it will be raised. While some people oppose the rate, by far the majority support one and are happy to pay for coordinated ...pest management, and therefore, a rate will be struck. We have taken your feedback on board and adjusted the plan accordingly, aiming to deliver the best value we can for your money. Please contact us for more information, to add your own comments or to see how we can help you with your pests. Check your mail box for the survey and information sheet, too. Kind regards, Josephine Mead, Project Officer #pestfreewarren
02.01.2022 Last chance for public Declared Pest Rate (DPR) consultation this year! This is what Warren Biosecurity has done to date, to to give you the opportunity to express your views on local pest control and the DPR to fund it. We missed you at some of the events (despite all the advertising) , and would urge you join us on Saturday to tell us your views. Feedback will be added to the data. There are 2 sessions- at 10am and 1pm. Join us!
02.01.2022 This is the corner of Graphite and Ralston Roads, recently mown by Shire staff, but not before they applied herbicide (a month ago) to African Love Grass, and r...emoved Victorian Tea Trees along the verge. It looks great and is a good demonstration of smart weed control. I believe the Property Care Team did the work, am I correct? See more
01.01.2022 Our Fox Forum, held Monday eve, with a group of local farmers and expert pest controllers, including DBCA and DPIRD, yielded some very helpful information to help solve some very specific problems - namely, how best to control foxes in our orchardy, small farm, touristy Seven Day Road area. So many hints and help came out that we need a second meeting. While I prepare notes and help the farmers with new strategies, here is a cool article about a successful method used by our neighbours in Boyup Shire. https://swccnrm.org.au/out-foxing-the-feral-fox #vexingvixensoutfoxed #unitedgrowers #coordinatedcontrol
