23.01.2022 WE NEED YOUR HELP - Animals in the Adelaide hills need your help! We are currently calling out to all of our clients and Adelaide residents, who are wanting to help in the current fire crisis going on in our beloved Adelaide hills. ... We are currently seeking donations of dog and cat food, any bedding, food/water bowls and large branches of gum trees for our wildlife, and any horse or livestock feed! We have several of our own staff members who have been affected in some way due to these fires and we are hoping to be able to support them and their communities. If you are able to donate anything at all, we will have a collection box at both Pet Universe locations and will be accepting donations until 12pm Tuesday. Even the smallest donation will make a difference
23.01.2022 HAPPY HUMP DAY
22.01.2022 THE RESPONSE TO OUR APPEAL FOR DONATIONS HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE we have been gifted with so many important items. We have reached capacity of our need for blankets and bedding, however we are still desperately seeking pet food, branches of gum leaves for our native friends, towels, and fodder. THANK YOU SO MUCH to our clients, members of the public and our own staff members who have contributed so far! #cudleecreekfires
21.01.2022 ROCK DOG We had a cute little visit from Valentino today, just wanting some cuddles in this cold weather As always, he comes in style
21.01.2022 CUDLEE CREEK FIRE ANIMAL FOOD DRIVE UPDATE PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE WANTING TO DONATE The response we have received here has been incredible to say the least! Thankyou to every single person who has donated food, beds, collars, leads, livestock food and everything else! This is going to make a huge difference to so many people which have been affected by these tragic fires.... WE DO ASK, if you have organised food or other goods for us and are still waiting to drop it off, please do so. But we are now AT CAPACITY due to the overwhelming response (much bigger than we anticipated). So if you were yet to purchase anything please hold off until we can assess if more is needed or not at this stage. THANKYOU AGAIN!
21.01.2022 KITTEN SEASON It’s that time of year again WHAT IS KITTEN SEASON?... While cats can become pregnant year round, as it gets warmer they reach peak fertility, thus animal shelters around the country receive a MASSIVE influx of kittens from September through to May. This leads to a huge oversupply of kittens making it even more difficult to rehome the large number of unwanted adult cats WHY IS THIS SUCH A PROBLEM? While puberty in female cats usually occurs at 6 months of age, they can become pregnant as early as four months of age. Cats produce an average of four kittens per litter and can have 2-3 litters per year - that’s a lot of unplanned kittens! Our boys also suffer, as entire male cats are more likely to fight over females. This provides the perfect opportunity for transmission of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which predisposes our cats to a variety of illnesses due to a reduced immune system. HOW CAN I HELP? - Ensure that your entire cats are kept inside until desexed - Desex your kittens! We recommend between 4-6 months of age - If you have been feeding a stray cat and they have adopted you, it’s ideal to have them desexed to prevent further stray kittens - If you want to directly help with the oversupply of kittens, many rescue groups will be looking for foster carers at this time of year DESEXING AT PET UNIVERSE At Pet Universe we offer high quality desexing procedures at competitive rates. ALL of our spay patients receive intravenous fluid therapy and advanced pain relief during surgery - we do not believe this is an optional extra as we want to ensure the best possible care for your pets. Our boys also receive multiple forms of pain relief during there short castration procedure. Any questions? Please call either clinic on 8369 3111 (Northgate) or 8266 4666 (Broadview). Our lovely receptionist Alex has been fostering a stray cat Shelby who has recently given birth to 2 beautiful kittens! Please enjoy the cute photos
20.01.2022 Marley keeping an eye on the receptionist while she waits to see the vet Sometimes cats dont mind coming in on a lead and roaming our designated cat friendly waiting room.
20.01.2022 STORM PHOBIAS Storm phobias are REAL when it comes to our pets! Dogs especially! They can begin to pant, pace, bark, cling to their owners, try to hide behind or under something in the household & in more severe cases can claw through drywall, chew & destroy household items or even break through a glass window in their panic ... Things you can do to help your pet through a storm; Give them a calm & safe place to retreat too. Close all curtains or blinds to block out light & noise. Keep them indoors until the weather has truly passed. Consider a snug garment like a Thundershirt, as this helps them feel safe. Attempt to engage or distract them. Ensure your premises is secure if noone is home. Speak to your veterinarian regarding behaviour modification or medication for those severe reactors. We hope you all stay safe during this up & down weather. For more information please phone us on either 8369 3111 or 8266 4666

19.01.2022 CUDLEE CREEK FIRE - PET FOOD APPEAL UPDATE Just in time for Christmas, we did it! - Today we delivered the donations to the Lobethal relief centre To our amazing clients, members of the public, and everyone who shared our appeal loud and wide on social media and by word of mouth. To every single person who has donated, our own staff members who have collected and transported donations, and to the many other workplaces who have rallied together, WE THANK YOU! ... To say the response has been overwhelming is the least. The generosity that we have experienced these past two days has given hope to so many in a time of need. Though these fires still burn, and we have a long Summer ahead, we know that there will be many animals and their humans who will be feeling that little bit brighter this Christmas. So to every single one of our clients, and every person who has contributed in some way, to every CFS & wildlife volunteer who will be working tirelessly around the clock this Christmas and into the New Year, on behalf of the Pet Universe team, we thank you and wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas #cudleecreekfires

We are still abiding by the 1.5mtr social distancing whilst inside the clinic, and in the consultation rooms. In saying this, if your pet is unable to be examined away from you (abiding by the 1.5mtr rule) then you may either be asked to leave the room, or your pet will be taken out the back for a nurse to help with the exam. This is to help prevent... you and the vet coming into close contact. We still ask that if you have any cold or flu like symptoms that you do not enter the clinic. To all our wonderful clients who have helped us get through this more tougher time, and for those abiding by the guidelines, we thankyou, and hope to be back to normal one day soon.

08.01.2022 GRASS SEED SEASON *WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? As we move into the warmer months, many grass species produce large-spined seeds. In addition to these seeds getting EVERYWHERE, the spines assist the seeds to burrow into nasty places in our pets.... *WHAT HAPPENS? Common places for grass seeds to become lodged include the ears, nose, eye and between toes, often causing superficial abscesses. In extreme cases grass seeds have also been known to migrate into deeper tissue such as the lungs! *WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR? Clinical signs will vary by position of grass seed, and include: - Paws: licking/chewing, limping, swelling between toes - Ears: shaking head, scratching ears, crying in pain - Nose: sneezing, discharge, trouble breathing - Eyes: discharge, swelling, squinting, rubbing/scratching at eye *HOW CAN I REDUCE THE RISK OF MY PET GETTING A GRASS SEED? - In long-haired breeds check coat regularly and trim fur away from toes in high risk periods - Always check paws for grass seeds after walks or time outside - Keep your lawn short to reduce access to grass seeds - Avoid walks in tall, grassy areas with lots of seed heads *I’M WORRIED MY PET HAS A GRASS SEED - HELP! If you’re worried that your pet has a grass seed, make an appointment with us ASAP. If the grass seed is in an uncomfortable position or there is an associated abscess, your pet may require sedation to remove the grass seed. We can also provide appropriate pain relief and other medications if necessary Keep safe and be alert. Love from the Pet Universe Team.

She underwent blood bile acid tests and also diagnostic imaging in the form of a specialist ultrasound to diagnose the shunt. ... Honey then went in for surgical repair. This involves placing a device around the abnormal vessel which it slowly closes off. One month post operation and Honey is doing great What is a PSS? Liver shunt Happens when a pets venous blood from the stomach, intestines, pancreas and spleen bypasses the liver. The liver filters toxins, if it is bypassed, the toxins build up in the body and this results in the pet showing neurological signs and having slow or non-existent growth. The pet can be born with the shunt (congenital) or can get it later in life (acquired). Signs & Symptoms (just to name a few) Stunted growth Not gaining weight Lethargy Spaciness (staring into space) Disorientation Diagnosis Clinical signs Blood tests (bile acid tests) Diagnostic imaging Urinalysis Treatment Medical managment Surgical repair If left untreated, pets are not likely to survive!!
