25.01.2022 Over the next few weeks I am posting a series of discussion topics based on the PURPOSE to RESULTS Spectrum. When I am working with a client, and because coaching is focused on future outcomes, conversations invariably focus on one of the key areas in this spectrum. PURPOSE Ever wondered about the importance of PURPOSE or what it actually is? So often we move through life without actually sitting down and deeply considering Purpose related questions:... Why am I here? Why am I doing what I am doing? Where am I going in my work/life/faith? Am I fulfilling my purpose in life or is there something greater I am meant to be doing? Am I making the most of the time I have been given? Am I fully exercising the gifts I was created with? Why was I created the way I was? We are a Christian Coaching business and are here to help everybody be the person they were created to be. Please like our new page and share it with your friends. 13.01.2022 YOULL NEVER AMOUNT TO MUCH????? My Year 9 Science teacher said to me, "Young Edwards, you might as well leave school at the end of Year 9 and get an apprenticeship because you will never amount to much!" Eventually I finished Year 12, got through Uni easily and ended up teaching for 25+ years, was school Principal and Head of Primary, presented at conferences and helped other schools implement programs to improve their teaching, learning and extension opportunities. I always... wanted to go back and talk to him about his comments, but never did. Instead, I used them to motivate me to be a better teacher and to understand children and learning more fully. The longer I worked with children and adults in schools, the more I came up against issues caused by the Competence Learning Matrix, Cycle or Ladder, and it often brought back memories of my struggles in Year 9. As a school Principal I very quickly discovered that ignoring where my people were, in this matrix, with respect to any form of change or project, was to my detriment. For the next 2 weeks I want to focus on the matrix and the lessons we can learn around it...whether we are leaders, parents, husbands, wives, athletes, etc. Read on and let us learn together.

11.01.2022 So, Purpose!! In Book One of Aristotles Ethics, he considers the most vexing question we, as humans face: What is the purpose of life? He argues that everything has purpose or a goal, and concludes the purpose of human life is Eudaimonia - a construct of the common good, happiness, honour, virtue, excellence, rational action according to virtue, wisdom, pleasure from virtuous acts, wellbeing etc. My belief is simple compared to Aristotles. Of course that may have somethi...ng to do with our respective levels of intellect or the amount of time we have to sit around pondering great things! I like to think it is the latter. For me, Purpose emanates from my belief in God as the creator and my heavenly Father who deeply concerns Himself with all that I do. If my purpose is "To serve, honour and worship God in all things" it stands to reason that how I lead, communicate, make decisions, coach etc, will all have that Purpose as their foundation stone. When I work as part of a team, does my Purpose correlate with each other persons? If it does...great. But if it does not, how will my values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours correlate? They wont! And herein lies the root cause of much conflict in any team, relationship and organisation. Teams of any size need a shared Purpose to be at their most productive. 08.01.2022 This week I am all EARS. Check out this great conversation started model. Have you ever struggled to start a conversation with one of your team, especially around where they are at, how they are achieving, where they need to grow, what their goals might look like? These are tough conversations to enter. When we start talking performance, achievement, growth or improvement, most people can become a touch defensive. It depends a lot on your organisational culture and history b...ut even then, it is one of those reactions most of us have when we are under the proverbial microscope. When I did my coaching studies one of the great models we studied and practiced was one of the shortest. I have used it 100s of times and found it a great way to begin sessions with clients from those in executive leadership to people wanting to get fit. Below is the model, The EARS Model, which we studied at The Open Door Coaching Group. Notice the characteristics: Start with the positives, focus in on those and elicit plenty of details. Get people talking about what is going well, and how and why so they fully understand then reproduce the positives. People NEED TO KNOW what, how and why they are doing well. Help them reflect on how the positives have improved performance. I always ask people to rate how happy/proud/pleased they are with how far they have come, out of 10, in different areas they have identified above. Tap into their emotions and get them reflecting on what learning they have achieved. Go back to their self-rating. What could they do to raise that rating higher? Keep focus on their achievements, no matter how small. How can the individual build on their strengths and achievements to step into less comfortable areas? Ensure they take the time to share and celebrate their growth. As a leader you always have the right to bring something into this conversation! I use questions, normally ones that came up in the self-rating area, and never start with a Why?. o You said you were really happy with X. How are you going implementing Y? 06.01.2022 If you ever needed to see a HPT and clear purpose in action, stand where I am right now and marvel. What an incredibly well oiled machine. Super professional, incredibly calm, proficient and polite beyond all measure. Just travelled to the RBWH with a friend who is quite unwell. From the ambos onward I just marvel at how well their ER teams function. Well done public hospital staff and ambulance teams.
