21.01.2022 As Deputy Mayor it was great to be at the official opening last night of the new LED lights installed on several of the Netball Courts in Langford at the Netball Park! They are much brighter and use less electricity.

20.01.2022 It is exciting that in WA the COVID-19 restrictions have been eased so that now groups of up to 10 people are allowed, which will mean that groups of 10 or less can meet again face to face. but still maintaining the social distancing measure of 1.5m. But churches remain closed to the public, except for wedding, funerals (10 people max) and pre-recording or live streaming of services. https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//Cautious-easing-of-

19.01.2022 Some waste is too hazardous to put into your council provided wheelie bins! Residents of the City of Gosnells can drop off batteries, electrical cables, computers & IT, TVs, fluorescent tubes and globes at the City of Gosnells Operations Centre , Canning Park Avenue, Maddington during business hours. If you live in other local government areas, you can find your location at www.recycleright.wa.gov.au/find-my-nearest

19.01.2022 As the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal wont be knocking on people's doors this year due to COVID-19, they are depending on people sending in donations. I was out letter boxing the Salvation Army fliers in Gosnells this afternoon. Do give generously - the Salvo's do a great job and deserve our support! You can support our local Gosnells Salvation Army by going to this link: https://digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au/gosnells-salv

18.01.2022 When the waste to energy plant in Kwinana is completed, the rubbish collected by the City's garbage trucks will be transferred to big semitrailers to take it to the plant. Busselton has such a transfer set up. Watch the three short videos they have kindly produced so that people in Gosnells can see what is planned for the remediated old tip site at Kelvin Rd. Using our rubbish to generate baseload electricity is such a good use of this material, and using it in this way p...roduces less greenhouse gases than landfill. And even the organics that are burnt produce about 40% less greenhouse gas effect than if they were composted. As a keen gardener, I like the compost. The only problem is it produces methane during the decomposition, which has a greater greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide. I guess we cant win all the time! https://yoursay.gosnells.wa.gov.au//wi/292139/videos/22014

14.01.2022 The Salvation Army is a real life saver for many people who are struggling. The Red Shield Appeal doorknock wont happen this year due to the corona virus. The Salvos do a great job and deserve our support. I have just sent in my donation - may I encourage you to do likewise?

11.01.2022 We had an interesting council meeting tonight! The Mayor, David Goode, is a very consultative Mayor. Under the Council's Civic and Ceremonial Functions Policy, the Mayor has the authority to host a civic dinner each year, and a month or two ago, he indicated that he was planning to have a simple dinner in a council venue later in the year as an opportunity to lobby our local MPs , both Federal and State, to seek funding for some of our projects that we are trying to get und...erway. It would also be an opportunity to invite some community leaders. Cr Dewhurst was opposed to having the dinner, because of Covid-19, and people doing it 'tough' - he thought it would not be a good look to have such a dinner. Our Mayor then sent an email around to say that seeing the desire to host the event was not unanimously supported, he would not proceed with it. Cr Dewhurst today had a motion on the agenda that read: That Council, in order to continue to demonstrate financial restraint in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, resolves: Not to host its Annual Civic Dinner in 2020'. I thought that is strange! The Mayor has decided that already! Why Cr Dewhurst put such a motion, is puzzling. Had he put a motion along the lines that Council endorses the Mayor's decision not to proceed with the Civic Dinner , I would have supported it. Neither I, nor the majority of councillors were prepared to support a motion that makes it look as council made the decision, when in fact the Mayor had already made the decision. Cr Dewhurst also moved that no councillors should attend interstate conferences until after June 30, 2021, again to show financial restraint. Given the Covid-19 situation, you - like me - probably wonder why he would bother to do that. Covid-19 will make it unlikely that interstate conferences will be possible. But if Covid-19 comes under control, my view was - and that was shared by the majority - that if there is a worthwhile conference to attend, that councillors should feel free to apply to attend. My view is that the quicker we can all get back to normal living, the better. Given the battering that our economy has taken from the virus lock downs and travel limitations, the worst thing that council could do is to try and reduce spending. Indeed the Federal and State Government are stepping up spending to create jobs. As Council we have brought forward various projects to help create employment. The best thing all of us who have jobs and money, is to spend it on things that support local businesses and help keep local people in work.

03.01.2022 It is a pity that the article in the Gosnells Examiner (23/07/2020) about the Gosnells Mayoral Dinner was so far off the mark. Pity the journalist did not talk to the Mayor or myself about what the Mayoral dinner would have been about. The holding of a Mayoral dinner is at the discretion of the Mayor. The Mayor, David Goode, who is very consultative, emailed all councillors and said he was planning to hold a dinner now that the Covid-19 restricitons were eased, but was op...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Yesterday was a special day at the City of Gosnells Civic Centre as we held a little ceremony in memory of an amazing lady - Blossom D'Silva, who worked at the City for 34 years. She always made you feel welcome, and was a very efficient, professional lady, who arranged countless citizenship ceremonies among her various roles. She will be sorely missed by staff. Our condolences to her family.
