25.01.2022 PLEASE READ The Cryptolocker virus has popped up again with 2 of my clients recently having ALL their files locked and not retrievable, Just imagine in approx. one minute you lose every Word file, PDF, Picture, MYOB Data File etc on your PC and how devistated you would be. The latest came in the form of what appeared to be an AGL power bill.... Best rule of thumb to avoid getting infected is to follow these rules: 1. NO COMPANY WILL SEND YOU A BILL, INVOICE IN A WORD DOCUMENT. 2. NO COMPANY WILL SEND YOU A BILL, INVOICE IN A ZIP FILE. 3. DO NOT OPEN WORD OR EXEL DOCUMENTS SENT TO YOU VIA EMAIL. If you have someone that you know sends you word documents by email, delete and email them and ask can they please "save as" a PDF in word and then send. Any word or exel file can have a program imbeded in to it that is capable of doing any sort of damage to your files and PC. People ask wont my AntiVirus stop this and the short answer in NO, This particular virus seems to be being reverse engineered on a daily basis and any antivirus can be days behind in updating to detect it. REMEMBER THE BEST ANTIVIRUS IS YOU NOT OPENING UNKNOWN OR SUSPICIOUS FILES.

22.01.2022 The question here was "why is my computer shutting down regularly, is it getting hot?" This being the heatsink for the CPU, as you would guess it was never going to stay cool.
18.01.2022 An explanation of Virus and malware Before we can answer that, we need to first unveil what, exactly, are viruses and malware. A virus is a piece of code that is capable of copying itself in order to do damage to your computer, including corrupting your system or destroying data. Malware, on the other hand, is an umbrella term that stands for a variety of malicious software, including Trojans, spyware, worms, adware, ransomware, and yes, viruses. So the logic follows: all vir...uses are malware. Not all malware are viruses. Ya dig? Unfortunately we can't stop there because it's a little more complicated than that. Viruses are considered to be legacy threats. By this we mean: they've been around for a while and haven't changed all that much. They aren't used very often by today's cyber criminals, which is why many antivirus companies have evolved to fight more than "just" viruses. This can include infectious malware like worms, web threats like keyloggers, or concealment malware, such as rootkits. So why do antivirus companies still call themselves antivirus? Since viruses made headlines in the 90s, security companies focused their efforts on fighting them. Thus the term antivirus was born. It all boils down to marketing. Most people are familiar with computer viruses and what they do. Not a lot of people know what malware is. Compare and contrast Still, there are key differences between antivirus and anti-malware software that go beyond semantics. What differentiates antivirus and anti-malware companies are the types of malware they specialize in and how they deal with them. Antivirus usually deals with the older, more established threats, such as Trojans, viruses, and worms. Anti-malware, by contrast, typically focuses on newer stuff, such as polymorphic malware and malware delivered by zero-day exploits. Antivirus protects users from lingering, predictable-yet-still-dangerous malware. Anti-malware protects users from the latest, currently in the wild, and even more dangerous threats. In addition, anti-malware typically updates its rules faster than antivirus, meaning that it's the best protection against new malware you might encounter while surfing the net. By contrast, antivirus is best at crushing malware you might contract from a traditional source, like a USB or an email attachment. If antivirus and anti-malware were dances, antivirus would be the waltz and anti-malware would be hip-hop.
12.01.2022 Poor Gecho touched the wrong wire in the PC power supply ;) BTW it smelt horrible, I could get the smell out of the car for days.
12.01.2022 What are and how cryptolockers are delivered and spread. Cryptolockers have been actively spreading in large attack waves in various regions of the world. The typical infection vector used in these campaigns is an email with a malicious attachmenta tactic known as phishing. The message may be localized to the victim, For example, if a victim is believed to be in the U.S., fake package tracking information will be sent in an email spoofed to appear as if it comes from FedEx ...or UPS or if you in Australia from Telstra or Paypal etc. The location of the potential victim can be determined by the top level domain used in the email address of the target, or the ISP that hosts the domain. If the recipient falls victim to this social engineering scheme and opens the attachment, a trojan executes on the computer, unless blocked by antivirus. In recent cases, the trojan was a downloader that retrieved and then executed the cryptolocker. The cryptolocker then hunts for a wide range of file types to encryptand once its dirty work has been done, it displays a message demanding the user electronically transfer the cash to have the files decrypted.
12.01.2022 After a long wait, Australia will soon have a mandatory data breach notification scheme in place. Despite the long lead up to this legislation, many businesses are unaware of it, when it comes in place, or if it applies to their business. What is Mandatory Data Breach Notification? The soon to be introduced mandatory data breach notification scheme will require all entities subject to the Privacy Act to notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and i...ndividuals who may be affected if a breach occurs. The intent of the legislation is to ensure that individuals have the opportunity to have steps to protect their data or personal information if a breach occurs. When Does This Legislation Come Into Effect? From 23 February 2018, the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) will include the mandatory data breach notification scheme. How Will The Legislation Affect Businesses? As a general statement, this legislation will only affect entities with at least $3 million turn over. For more information on who the legislation applies to, please refer to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Businesses will need to consider how the Mandatory Data Breach Notification legislation will affect them. The failure of an entity to comply with the obligations to notify may result in investigations or in the case of repeated non-compliance or serious breaches, substantial civil penalties. In addition to investigations and potential penalties, mandatory data breach notification means that businesses risk losing their reputations and trust of their customers, in the case of a breach.

08.01.2022 Please be aware, I have warned before but a machine I picked up yesterday which had fried because of Humidity leaving a good film of water over all the internal components and then fizzled when the power was turned on. My advice is if your PC is in an area where humidity is a problem please leave the computer on during this humid time and just switch the monitor off. Take a look at this picture it is probaby the wettest I have seen the inside of a PC, It nearly looks as if a cup of water was poured over the motherboard.
07.01.2022 Just a Heads up that my yearly road trip is on its way again and as before I like to give you plenty of warning to allow any work needed done to be finalised prior to take off day. I will be heading off on Tuesday 8th of May and returning to work on Monday the 21st of May.
07.01.2022 I have been quite busy with failing computers the last 2 weeks and mostly it has been a result of the humidity. Take note of the water around these fans that ended up dripping on the motherboard resulting in massive failure, My suggestion to these people that are in humid areas leave your PC running 24/7 and just turn your monitor on in these hmid months.
06.01.2022 Customer asked why is my PC not working, reply was maybe this has something to do with it ;)

01.01.2022 Firstly the customer asked why his computer was getting hot, answer is easy, check the air vent on side cover. Then of course the humidity started and dust turned to mud, mud is conductive and then bang dead PC :( Please, if your PC is in a dusty environment during our humid period it is very advisable to leave your PC on and just turn off your monitor, to avoid a dead PC such as this.
