12.02.2022 Hi all, the latest Winter Newsletter is out now ! Have a read at - https://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com/newsletter-winter-2019/

23.01.2022 Its now less than two months to this years Cressy Cane. The Draft program is here http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com//Cressy-Cane-Draft-Pro for you to have a look at. I am delighted and excited at the prospect of our International Rod Maker Bob Clay presenting this year. Bob will share with us, his fishery, his rods and his years of experience of Bamboo Rod making. An innovative and thoughtful rod designer, his hollow built Bamboo spey rods have implications for shorter ...rods too. He will be a tremendous addition and asset to this years program. http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com//Cressy-Cane-Draft-Pro Last year, at Cressy Cane, the group decided that for this years gathering, it would be an interesting exercise to contrast and compare two rods. The 7613 Dickerson and the Paul Young Perfectionist. Both 76" and consistently placed by rodmakers in their top ten favourite tapers. This exercise will be fun and educational. So, we will have 20 + rods made for this years event but each rod will differ in one aspect from the others. eg: 4 piece, bamboo ferrule, one piece, madake cane, swelled butt, oven tempered, and so on. ( the list of makers and rods can be seen here - http://www.troutbeat.com/cressycane/rod-project-2018.html ) This exercise will build on previous Cressy Cane events to develop a deeper understanding of the qualities of the wonderful cane material and the consequence of altering rod characteristics. The wonderful Chef Jen ( 10 out of 10) will be looking after us. Peter Hayes will always teach you something new. The mesmerising David Anderson with his beautiful reading to start the day. The generous Nick Taransky and the wonderful energy of fellow Rodmakers. Old friends and new friends. I cant wait. You can book online here to reserve a place. http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com//cressy-cane-weekend-/ I will be in touch closer to the date with a final program and also to sort airport pick ups/drop offs etc but in the meantime if you need to discuss anything, you can email, ring or text me 0418426905 or Haysie 0409 944 699 [email protected] With warmest regards David ( Bamboo) Hemmings http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com

22.01.2022 Life, Love and Fly Fishing Cane rod making week with Nick Taransky. Im halfway through building my first cane rod under the expert tutelage of the worlds best cane rod maker - Nick Taransky. ... The week long, all inclusive live in course has to be one of the best things I have ever done. Its peaceful and creative and so pleasant to be with like minded people. Every keen fly fisher should do Nicks course. In just two more days of such rewarding effort I will be catching big fat Tasmanian trout on my own rod and some of the flies tied at last weekends Muz Wilson Memorial Fly Tying Weekend which was also a huge success.

22.01.2022 A great finish to my 24 th guiding season. Annie Skarrat caught a thumper in a tiny creek on a hopper and christened her new 79 #3 weight rod into the bargain. She must have been paying attention in this past weekends Girls Gone Fly Fishing event.

18.01.2022 Sandy River Spey Clave, Oregon, USA - May 2016 Well its not often that I get excited about fishing and casting. After 41 years of fly fishing Ive seen it all before. Well mostly. Yesterday I arrived in Oregon and am now hanging out with my Stripper Clip partner Rich Femling. We are here to learn more about Spey casting and more importantly how to teach it. ... We are also here to promote the fabulous stripper clip Today we met the delightful host of the Spey clave and owner of the Welches Fly Shop, Mark Bachman. This is the 16 th year of what is most likely the largest gathering of Spey casters in the world. On Friday Marks 25 instructors run free lessons on the Sandy river. Get this..... I tried to book in online a month ago and the 100 places were already taken. How about that- a full house of 100 students. I cant wait to see how they do it. It must be the largest free casting class ever done. Tomorrow we have a day off to fish the famous Deschuttes River. Someone has to do it. Travelling is tough with a hammock to sleep in under ancient cedars on the bend of a majestic river. Falling asleep to the music of the river. Then to wake and fish all day with my magnificent Taransky Spey rod for fresh run Steelhead on swung flies and floating lines. Then I have to mix up plenty of Dry Fly Gin and tonics for all my fabulous new found Spey casting friends. Then I have to stump up again to do it all again the next day. Im also really looking forward to catching up with the world Spey distance champion Travis Johnson and world champion Gin drinker Simon Gawesworth again.

18.01.2022 Well..... I can finally thank you all for you patience...... The newly tooled, new model, improved STRIPPER CLIP is now ready for sale and immediate shipping. Dont delay. Get in early and take advantage of this first production run. Go to my website www.peterhayesflyfishing.com and purchase your clips online with a secure server and your credit card number. ... I know you will love using the stripper clip. It solves all your line management problems so simply and effectively. Please share the concept with your other like minded fly fishing friends.

18.01.2022 Epic fly rod weekend Lets build a matching pair of Epic fibreglass rods together Dad Lachie said. What a cool idea for a little father and son bonding. ... So.... You parents of budding fly fishers.... Turn off the electronics, sit side by side and share in learning a new handcrafting skill. As we found out its not difficult and think of the joy we will have using these great rods. Think about it as a Christmas present.

18.01.2022 From Wizzy and his team from Inland Fisheries Tasmania. They had a guy pull out of an upcoming trip and there is an opportunity for someone to take advantage of the previously paid $1200 deposit. Weipa is perhaps the best saltwater destination that I have ever fished. If you can make the short notice you should go along with this great group of guys. You wont regret it. Chris number is below. Peter. Great opportunity for someone to go on a fly fishing adventure to Weipa with 5 blokes and renowned guide Alan (Fish) Philliskirk and team. We have had one person that has had to withdraw. This spot is offered at a substantial discount. It is an 8 night and 7 day fishing fishing package arriving in Weipa on Saturday 3 June 2017 and fishing 4th-11th and departing Weipa on 11 June. If you are interested call Chris on 0418566272

17.01.2022 My mate Mike Stevens is hosting http://www.tasmanianflyfishingexpo.com.au Come and have a look !

17.01.2022 The last cast on the last day of the season with a Callum Ross cane rod and a dry fly. This fish was luckily caught at 4:42 pm. Its a tradition that I have shared with fellow enthusiast and one of my best friends Mike Stevens for many years. Mikes last fish came exactly an hour earlier. Afterwards we sat on the bank and enjoyed a fine Single Malt as we watched the sun fade low into the western sky.... All the while a baby platypus literally played at our feet. It was a great finish to a great season. The winter fly casting schools start soon

17.01.2022 A guides day off and a happy ending to the reel saga.

16.01.2022 Understanding Tracking and becoming 'more compact' I came across this short video the other day. I'd been teaching casting for several days in Taiwan and an idea of a tracking exercise came to me in the shower that morning. For what it's worth, and of course, 'it depends' I think that most fly fishermen should try to achieve better tracking, become more compact and conservative in their movements and learn to use much less power.

16.01.2022 Guides day off and now the reel falls off.

15.01.2022 A great week of fishing in Tasmania with Simon, Lachlan and Randall. Cane rods, kayaks, camper trailers, quad bikes and trout. What a great mix.

14.01.2022 Matt Howell gets to come fishing with me one day and gets a casting lesson thrown in. I might just teach him what these boys taught me on their casting pool last night. On the other hand I may just hold back that little bit Steve Rajeff taught me about the secret power of the haul!

14.01.2022 My office desk today.

06.01.2022 Girls Gone Fly Fishing - 2016 Report by Di Kalweit. I was trying not to break the speed limit as I drove past the township of Cressy, towards Peter Hayes Fly Fishing Lodge. Why was I excited? The second Girls Gone Fly Fishing weekend (GGFF), was about to begin! Read the full story by going to http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com/

06.01.2022 A guides day off. Such a rare thing and much needed after a very hectic month of tremendous dry fly fishing with clients. Finally an opportunity to enjoy some of it myself. Taransky madake split cane rod. Saricione reel. Oru kayak and dry flies.

06.01.2022 It was a very cool week Annie. You were all great students. Lots of generosity of spirit and forever the student from both the CCIs and the MCIs. Roy and I never tire of passing on our knowledge to keen fly fishers like you guys.

05.01.2022 West Yellowstone Montana. Camping for a week with the legendary guide Chuck Ravetta. Fished Hebgen lake this morning in a huge dun hatch. The Callibaetis duns hatch from 10 am in the bright sunshine. ... The fish have trouble deciding if they should eat the big mayflies or the tiny Tricos that are on the water spent in their thousands. This is the land of bugs ! Drinking Bloody Marys in the boat intensifies the hatch. When the wind gets up we motor up the Maddison River and polaroid big browns and catch them on a mayfly pattern called a purple haze. Todays animals: Elk, Deer, Fox, Osprey, Otters and Voles. The best thing I learnt today, and maybe this year, is that Chuck taught me how to use kitchen tongs to teach the power snap and stop. Its much better than my bubble wrap story or Joan Wulffs kitchen sponge. I will post a video. So clever but simple.

05.01.2022 Peter Hayes Says Finesse Is What The Greats Have In Common - Read this great article, from the menu Fishing Articles or here http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com/peter-hayes-says-fines/

05.01.2022 Chuck Ravetta, best guide in Montana and second best guide in the world. Teaching the power snap or speed up and stop. I think its a much better concept than my bubble wrap idea or Joan Wulffs sponge. ... From this day on I will have a pair of kitchen tongs in my casting course bag of tricks.

05.01.2022 Tracking and good body language I came across this short video that was taken a couple of years ago when I was teaching casting inTaiwan. I know it depends but as a generalisation most fly fishermen could do well to become more compact and conservative with their movements whilst backing off the power.

04.01.2022 Today was the last guided fishing day of this season. Ive survived, and thrived, for 22 years in this small niche business. Finished the day with a happy client, Bill Greensmith, that caught his biggest ever fish on a fly - a 4 1/2 pound Rainbow trout. ... After lunch Bill again caught his biggest ever fish on a fly -this time a 5 1/2 pound Brown trout. How good is that- 2 fish for 10 pounds ! My next focus is on casting classes around Australia. Keep an eye on my website for dates near you.

02.01.2022 A great start to the 2015/2016 trout season Water levels are generally low and the temperatures are higher than normal for this time of the season. Gary had a cracker brown of 22" eat his possum shaving brush in just a foot of gin clear water a few days ago. We were fishing a local river so that was a sensational fish. ... Henry also christened his new Taransky cane rod with a ripping 25" brown of 6,5 lb caught on a dry fly !

01.01.2022 Sometimes we have memorable nights at the lodge.

01.01.2022 Today is the last day of my 24 th guiding season. A ritual is to fish with my dear friend Mike Stevens and try to catch a trout on a dry fly and a cane rod on our last cast of the season. My son Lachie was also with us this afternoon and that made the session even more special. On this beautiful Tasmanian midlands autumn afternoon we celebrated our friendships with fly fishing friends that have passed. ... A Noel Jetson tied Red Tag, a Peter Mckean cane rod and one of Andrew Harkers hardy reels helped bring three beautiful trout to hand. A gin and tonic back at the car was a fitting salute to Ricky Fishboy Sutherland. 2019 will be the start of a quarter of a century of guiding and teaching of fly casting. Bring it on !
