24.01.2022 Mouthguard time! With the winter season fast approaching, now is a great time to organise your mouthguard. Custom fitting mouthguards made at the dentist provide the best protection to the teeth, lips and jaw joints. By taking an accurate impression of your teeth we can ensure that the mouthguard fits well, is comfortable and will act as an even shock absorber if your lower jaw is hit. We have 35 great colours to choose from and we can include your name and phone number into the mouthguard in case you accidentally lose it!

23.01.2022 The golden ratio is a concept that has fascinated mathematicians, scientists and artists for over 2000 years. It describes a ratio that is considered to be aesthetically pleasing and as such is observed in many areas of art and architecture from the Egyptian pyramids to the art of Da Vinci. The golden ratio is also relevant to creating an ideal smile. If the observable width of the front teeth follows the proportions of the golden ratio, an aesthetically pleasing smile can be created. At Peter Maloney Dental we can provide you with a comprehensive analysis of your smile and discuss available treatment options to improve your smile. The solution could be as simple as bonding tooth coloured resin to the teeth to restore their ideal proportions.

17.01.2022 Modern dental materials allow us to restore teeth closer to their original strength and appearance. Tooth coloured composite filling materials adhesively bond to the tooth allowing less tooth reduction and improved durability. When the shade is correctly chosen and the restoration is carefully shaped and polished, an excellent aesthetic result can also be achieved. Here is a picture of a recent case at Peter Maloney Dental where an old amalgam filling had started to break down and allow decay to start at the margin. We removed the filling and carefully placed a composite filling to restore the tooth.

10.01.2022 The acidity level of your mouth is a very important factor when considering the health of your teeth. Acidic drinks such as soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice or wine can cause minerals to dissolve out of the tooth surface which leads to weakening of your teeth. For example, some sports drinks are over 500 times more acidic than the acidity level required for tooth enamel to start dissolving. When the teeth come under acid-attack, the bodys main defence is saliva flow w...hich helps to return the acidity level of the mouth back to within a healthy range. This is why people with low saliva levels are at a higher risk of erosion to their teeth. Some helpful tips to minimise your risk of erosion include: -minimise frequency of acidic drinks such as soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice and wine -drink through a straw to help the acidic drink stay away from your teeth -chewing sugar-free gum after meals helps saliva to return your mouth to a healthy pH -rinse with water after acidic drinks -regularly attend dental check-ups because a dentist can detect early signs of erosion to your teeth

01.01.2022 Toothbrush Abrasion Often patients are surprised to hear that it is possible to "overbrush" their teeth. Brushing your teeth plays an important role in maintaining oral health however in some cases it is possible to cause damage to the gums and teeth. Scrubbing too hard in a back and forward motion can over time contribute to gum recession which exposes the root surface of the tooth. The root surface is less wear resistant than enamel making it more susceptible to being worn ...away by brushing too hard. This leads to a characteristic notch defect developing in the side of the tooth near the gumline which can cause tooth sensitivity or in some cases weaken the tooth. A few tips to prevent "overbrushing" include: - Use a soft toothbrush - Brush your teeth using a gentle circular motion when brushing the sides of the teeth. Avoid scrubbing back and forward - Avoid brushing your teeth within 30 minutes of consuming any acidic drinks such as fruit juice because the surface of the tooth is less wear resistant. - Many electric toothbrushes have pressure sensors to alert you if too much pressure is being applied. - Regularly attend dental check-up appointments because we can detect and manage early signs of abrasion If you have any dental questions that you would like answered, feel free to send us a facebook message :)
