24.01.2022 In order to minimise our impact on wildlife when photographing them: Be patient! Don’t force an animal to do something. Photograph animals from a safe distance. If your subject starts acting in an unnatural way or shows any sign of stress, you’re too close. Move further back or leave altogether. Never approach nests or dens during the breeding season.... Treat the habitat with the same regard that you have for the animals themselves. Don’t break open hollow logs after a subject and, if you move a rock or log put it back gently. Don’t handle wildlife! (unless you have a permit to do so). Always respect local cultures and customs. 15.01.2022 Back in 2008 I wrote a book on the #Bowerbirds of #Australia and New Guinea. Part of the book-writing process involved sourcing images of the different species and the various types of bowers that the males build to attract their potential mates. Eight of the 20 species of Bowerbirds are only found in Australia, and a further two species are found in both Australia and New Guinea. These ten species are the Spotted Catbird (found in both Australia and New Guinea), Green Catbir...d, Tooth-billed Bowerbird, Golden Bowerbird, Regent Bowerbird, Satin Bowerbird, Spotted Bowerbird, Western Bowerbird, Great Bowerbird and the Fawn-breasted Bowerbird (found in both Australia and New Guinea). 15.01.2022 The #LittleTern has a worldwide range, and in Australia there are three separate populations: one which breeds on beaches on the coasts of eastern and south-eastern Australia, another which breeds in northern Australia (Cape York Peninsula and the Top End), and a third which breeds in Asia, and then migrates to spend its non-breeding season in Australia, where it may intermingle with local birds. All populations of Little Terns forage by plunging into shallow water, taking sm...all fish from on or just below the water’s surface. 14.01.2022 My latest book release in the Naturalist's Guide series is on the #butterflies of Australia. I teamed up again with the amazingly talented and knowledgeable Rachel Whitlock, whom I also worked with on the Insects of #Australia guide that came out in 2019. This butterfly guide covers 280 species/genera of Australia's butterflies and is due for release in October 2020. I made a short video talking more about it: https://youtu.be/0yQI9Kk_ZcQ As with all of my other titles, you ...can pre-order/buy autographed copies from my website: https://prpw.com.au//A-Naturalists-Guide-to-the-Butterflie! #WildlifeAustralia #AustralianGeographic #NaturalistGuide #Butterfly #Photography #WildlifePhotographer #WildlifeWriter #WildlifeBookAuthor #JBPublishing

13.01.2022 The range of the Little Wattlebird is said to have been shaped by fashion. Before the 1970s, Australian suburban gardens were dominated by exotic trees, shrubs and flowers, providing little food for native birds. In the 1970s, the elms, rhododendrons, roses and gladioli had gone out of fashion, and were replaced by native trees and shrubs which provided bounteous nectar-laden flowers, and shelter among spiky foliage. This coincided with the invasion by Little Wattlebirds into... the suburbs of various cities, where they have remained and flourished. 12.01.2022 The Black Butcherbird is almost entirely deep bluish-black, except for the large silver-grey bill with a black tip. The Black Butcherbird inhabits rainforests and mangroves, including adjacent parkland and urban gardens, where it It is diurnal and largely sedentary, with pairs occupying permanent territories. Breeding takes place early in the wet season and both sexes perform nest-building and incubation duties and both feed the young. Food consists of lizards, small birds a...nd their eggs, mammals, crustaceans and insects, but it will also scavenge. The common name of butcherbird is derived from the habit of storing prey by impaling it on a sharp thorn or broken branch. 04.01.2022 I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to write over a dozen books on wildlife and have managed to incorporate many of my wildlife and nature photography images within them. This started after I published a series of scientific research papers on bird species from New Guinea and Australia while I worked as a curatorial assistant at the Australian Museum of Natural History in Sydney. My book writing started as a contributing author to two books from a 10 volume... series on the birds of Australia. Shortly afterwards I received offers to author two books on the birds of Australia, one of which was part of series that was awarded a Whitley Award for the Best Zoological Series. While I have continued to write other natural history titles as a sole author, I have also enjoyed working on several books with a number of talented co-authors. Check it out my recent titles: https://prpw.com.au/books/ Varied Sitella: image available at www.kapeimages.com.au #kapeimages #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #wildlifeaustralia #wildlifewriter #nature_aus #natgeoau #birdlifeoz #ABCmyphoto #ausgeo #unique_australia #MyNikonLife #SeeAustralia #birdsofaustralia #discoverwildlife #australiawildlife #australia #planetbirds #birdnerd #Birdwatchers

03.01.2022 A sad reality of the increased use of disposable, convenience and single use items during times of crisis. Despite the necessary use of some items, we should always aim for a more sustainable, reusable and environmentally-conscious option where possible. Either way, littering is not an option and correct disposal of all waste is essential.

02.01.2022 Cisticolas are distinguished by their rich golden plumage and pale pink-yellow legs. During the breeding season the male Golden-headed Cisticola attains a beautiful, unstreaked, golden crown. The female retains a streaked crown, similar to that of the non-breeding male. The song is a drawn out ‘zzzzt’, also a repeated metallic ‘link-link’ and a harsh ‘zeep’ in alarm. The Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis, an uncommon resident of Australia’s north coast, differs from the Go...lden-headed Cisticola in having a white-tipped tail. 01.01.2022 The #DuskyMoorhen is a bird species in the rail family and is one of the eight extant species in the moorhen genus. It occurs in India, Australia, New Guinea, Borneo and Indonesia. It is often confused with the purple swamphen and the Eurasian coot due to similar appearance and overlapping distributions. 01.01.2022 The #GreyButcherbird is not a bird to be messed with. When a nest or newly fledged chick is around, if you venture too close, a #butcherbird will swoop by flying straight at your face, sometimes striking with enough force to draw blood, and each swoop is accompanied by a loud, maniacal cackle.
