23.01.2022 HUGE TREE STUMP HAS CONSERVATIONISTS BUZZING A native bee hive is causing quite a buzz at the Mary River Catchment Committee depot in Gympie, after it was m...oved to the site inside a giant Blue Gum tree stump. The tree was deemed a safety risk to a home at Yandina Creek, but when the tree loppers realised there was a native bee hive inside they knew they had to save it. Glenbo Craig from Valley Bees says the arborist managed to cut a chunk out of the big gum tree to save the hive. "So when it came down, he elected to slice it off below and above it and create a magnificent sculpture and bring it back into the community and allow people to enjoy it," Mr Craig said. "The actual stump itself weighs about one-point-four tonnes so it was quite a large stump." Bee rescuer Peter Velenski helped save the hive and says a crane was needed to lift the huge tree onto a truck and transport it to the site in Stewart Terrace. "It was so big, I couldn't get it off the trailer... so I took it up on my big tandem trailer to Gympie. It's the best one I've saved."

07.01.2022 In light of World Bee Day today here some interesting facts about There are over 1,500 species of Australian native bees. Not all bees are yellow. Native bees can be many different colours, including black, yellow, red metallic green or even black with blue polka dots!... Commercial honey bees (Apis mellifera) are not native to Australia. They were introduced from Europe in about 1822. The smallest bee native to Australia, the Quasihesma bee found in Cape York, is less than 2mm long! Not all bees are furry and fat. Some native bees are sleek and shiny. A single honey bee may collect 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. Not all bees can sting. Ten species of Australian native bees are stingless. Stingless beekeeping is becoming very popular due to the delicious honey produced, great crop pollination and no stings of course! Pure honey was found in 2,000 year-old Egyptian pyramids, and was still edible. Male bees are called drones and they are very lazy. They do not work.
