21.01.2022 On Saturday I attended a Cairns Public Meeting on crime designed to instruct the Government to re-establish the tried and proven Petford Rehabilitation Program ...developed by Geoff Guest 30 years ago. Part of the program would see the youth offenders sent to a facility attached to a working cattle station, teaching horsemanship, and daily activities conducted to build the youths confidence. Geoff and I have had many great chats over the years and the Petford Rehabilitation Program partly falls in line with KAPs proposed Relocation Sentencing. The youth offenders are relocated to an isolated area where they can contribute, build, grow and be a part of a community they helped create - they gain skills, a sense of purpose and confidence. Rather than the revolving door scenario we have now - the youth offenders are sent to prison then emerge as a re-offender. KAP State Member for Hill Shane Knuth MP was one of the driving forces on Saturday. The motion passed unanimously by the meeting and Shane will be taking it to State Parliament. It's time we made a stand and looked at more than a Band-Aid fix - KAPs Relocation Sentencing along with the Petford Rehabilitation Program goes deeper and deals with the real issues changing it from its core problem - kids without direction and no sense of hope.
