23.01.2022 Another session of creating native vegetation/animal habitat down by Petrie Creek in Woombye on Saturday morning. The pictures show bits of much of the action but miss the bird count by Judy. 20 more plants installed and heaps of weeds removed, some in bags. The 10 of us enjoyed the activity, distanced social interaction sense of achievement and of course a great cuppa at the end. Thanks to Debbie and the wonderful SCC BushCare organisation for this program of preservation of the local native environment on council land. Next opportunity to join us here (and last for 2020) is on Saturday 05 December starting at 7am in Victory Park near the Rugby grounds.
21.01.2022 Here's a patch of the creek at Gulung Gung where some of us have been removing the Singapore Daisy for a few months/years. We're nearly there and tomorrow we'll do a bit more and plant the area with Lomandra and other similar creek stabilising plants to give the natives a good go. The local native animals seem to like it and that's the aim. We'll be there doing that and some other planting and weeding from 0700 Wed 28 Oct. If you'd like to join us in some satisfying worthwhil...e volunteering, the best access is from where we'll assemble in the carpark behind Repco in Howard St Nambour. To join in you'll need to come in bush protective clothing including boots/shoes/gumboots and a hat. We'll have all tools and equipment required, but bring your own favourite bushcare gear if you wish. We'll finish with a cuppa and a chat about 9 am. Bring your own mug is best as we'll be following Virus safe procedures including physical distancing and hand cleaning. Oh there's a bit of rain around. We normally manage to do lots between showers so don't let that put you off. But if it looks dodgy approaching start time, you could phone Norm on 0409639944 to confirm if we will be working. 19.01.2022 NAMEPLATES PROJECT IDENTIFIES LOCAL SPECIES, ADDS INTEREST TO WALKS A promising local plant species identification project has been resurrected 20 years after i...t was shelved. Bush Care Sunshine Coast Coordinator Norm Morwood re-activated the plan after he became aware of a stockpile of unused engraved nameplates of prominent local species. One of the main purposes of the name plate project is that people get to know the local plants and might plant the ones they like in their own places, he said. So Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group volunteers began work to place the nameplates at Namba Creek (the model Rail Park in Nambour) on Saturday where they carry out regular regeneration work. Twenty years ago Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group started a project to have the names of local species trees applied in public places, Norm said. They produced some engraved name plates and built concrete bases. Unfortunately at the time they could not get permission from Council to install them. I have obtained funding from Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group to do some corrections and to have more plates made to fill some obvious gaps, and we now have Council permission. Norm has been a Bush Care Coordinator since 2012 at three sites: Namba Creek, Florabunda Pocket at Victory Park and "Gulung Gung" which are local Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi words for "Family Connections Country". Gulung Gung is just downstream from Quota Park and we work at a few sites there in what is to become a new council park, said Norm. It’s a big open space behind and north of the businesses on Howard Street Price Busters to Repco. Norm said, like other volunteers, he found the work incredibly satisfying. It is an enjoyable, pleasant and rewarding way to contribute to the wellbeing of the planet, he said. It's the planting. It's the growing the natives and looking after the wildlife. And making a habitat for the wildlife. That's what we do, and it's fantastic. You put a few plants in, and you pull a few weeds out, and eventually it turns into a fantastic thing like that, he said pointing to a healthy forest of native regrowth. "The achievements on the sites are due to the enthusiasm and efforts of the teams of volunteers who come each working bee to give their time and skills and share the satisfaction." Norm said, surprisingly, interest in the group had increased since COVID with people seeking outlets to give back and get back to nature. 18.01.2022 The Water Dragons clearly love the native restoration we've been doing at Namba Ck in the Model Railway Park off Florence St Nambour and also enjoy the grassy bits when the sun's out. We'll be doing some more this Saturday 21 November, the last effort here for 2020. Mostly essential weeding but we'll add some more plant names as well. If you'd like to join in the fun and exercise, come in bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. We'll have all the tools needed, but bring your own if you like. We'll be social distancing etc, but that will not impede what we do. We'll assemble from 7 am in the Model Rail shelter for formalities and then get stuck into the satisfying stuff. And we'll finish by about 9 am with a cuppa to celebrate the achievements of 2020.
16.01.2022 Plenty of action last Saturday with 11 of us volunteers competing for the weeds to control at Namba Creek. A couple missing from the photos, sorry. And a new starter, Pam came to help and learn so she can apply the info to her own section of creek just upstream. I hope we did not put you off Pam. We got some more plant name labels installed too, and there are still another 20 to go in. Thanks all for a great year despite a few minor interruptions from the virus. Here's hoping for some suitable rain from the La Nina event. We'll be back here on 16 January, starting again at 0700.
15.01.2022 After some good rain it was all action at our Gulung Gung BushCare site in Nambour on Wednesday morning with this group of dedicated enthusiastic volunteers. We're lucky to have Nadia as our leader from SCC and she had arranged for SCC Senior Landscape Architect Danielle Edmunds to give us an insight into plans for development of the new park in the area, scheduled to commence next year. Looks like it will be done well, in conjunction with the wildlife spaces we have been res...toring/regenerating. On the day the main activity was to reduce the weeds to allow the planted local natives to grow and take over the weed suppression duties and provide habitat for the native animals. We also added 36 more native plants in a few locations, including the bed of the creek where the aim is to suppress the Singapore Daisy that takes every opportunity to get established and suppress native regeneration. Most of them even survived the small flood from another good downpour on Wednesday night. Next opportunity to join us here will be the last one for 2020 on Wednesday 25 November starting at 0700. But if you can't make that, we'll be back next year. Watch this space. See more
15.01.2022 Another morning of thorough weed control at Gulung Gung on Wednesday to complete the formal working bee for 2020. A great year for the site with help from many to keep the restoration going thru the 2020 difficulties. Special thanks to all the volunteers who've contributed and also to the Skilling Queensland crew back in the middle of the year. Apart from the weed control on Wed we did of course plant some lomandras and we had a special EOBCY cuppa and a good discussion with Gordon Agnew of SC Waterways team. Very interesting thanks Gordon and Nadia.
12.01.2022 Here's Ali of Catchment Services preparing the Gulung Gung site last Friday so we don't have to do too much tomorrow Wednesday 25 November at our working bee starting at 0700. However I reckon she and her team left plenty for us to do. So if you'd like to join in and help with our restoration of this section of creek in Nambour, we'd love to have your help. We meet in the carpark at the back of Repco in Howard St, get inducted and trained in virus safe procedures, have a bit... of a chat and then get stuck into it. To join in the fun, come in bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. We'll have all the tools for the planting and weeding we'll do, but bring your own favourites is good also. We'll finish with a cuppa around 9 am so bring your own mug and even thermos with the makings is super safe, but we'll have some for you as well. This time we'll have the pleasure of a talk from Gordon Agnew, Senior Waterways Officer from SCC who'll tell us about our creeks with particular reference to the plans for weirs and other structures that impede travel of the aquatic native animals. Should be good. See you there. Last chance here for the very famous 2020 year! Next one is not till late January. See more
06.01.2022 Another big day at Namba Ck bushcare site on Saturday morning. 12 of us weeding and planting. We even had a visit from the Sunshine Valley Gazette and you've already seen the story on that. Everyone got in the photos this time and Sonia provided us with a photo of Norm from last month just to stop the complaints of photographic bias. We made a big dint in weeds of all types and even dispatched a new one for us, a very uncomfortable Flacourtia jangomas that had grown unnoticed. Even a few lomandras added in gaps. Thanks all. We'll be back here in November on Sat 21st starting again at 0700.
02.01.2022 Here's a couple of flowering plants you'll probably see if you join us at Florabunda Pocket this Saturday 07 Nov starting at 7am, for more native forest and habitat regeneration/creation. The pretty white one is on a planted Backhousia myrtifolia (Cinnamon Myrtle) and the ugly brash yellow one is an invasive weed, Senna pendula (Easter Cassia, yes Google says it flowers all year and it clearly does here, but specially at Easter). We'll be planting and weeding in the bush, so... come in bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. We'll have all the tools necessary, but bring your own if you wish. Access to site is to come down Laidlaw Rd toward the Rugby Club, but turn right through the big mesh gates just above the Gymnastics hall. Follow that road and you'll see us assembling near the back oval. We'll be following Virus safe procedures including physical distancing and care with clean hands etc. However we'll still be able to enjoy a cuppa afterwards. Bring your own mug is good safe practice and even ingredients, although we'll have some for you as well. Looking forward to seeing you. See more
