24.01.2022 A viperfish I painted on the 'split grip' of the 5kg custom spin rod Tedla Morgan built for me. The painting's 8 years old, and was done with acrylic on the graphite of the rod blank, before being coated in rod builder's epoxy. It's seen a LOT of use and abuse, and has only suffered slight yellowing (which is typical of epoxy in the sun).

23.01.2022 A bit of 'environment' work I'm doing to build my portfolio (still a lot of detail work to go!) Some of you might be able to guess who will be living there eventually...

23.01.2022 What do you do when you can't sleep at 3AM in the morning? Break out the china ink!

21.01.2022 Conchoraptor gracilis, now with a body! This is just the low resolution version. Hope you like it! :-)

20.01.2022 A little work in progress. A spiky, spiky Comura trilobite that just got fed up waiting for someone to dig it up.

19.01.2022 Work in progress: A Velociraptor, feathers and all...

19.01.2022 A bit more progress. Still have to do some texturing and give it some mood lighting, but we're almost there!

18.01.2022 A little something I'm working on... an Indo-pacific permit a.k.a the snub-nosed dart!

17.01.2022 Just a little work in progress. It's a bad day to be an invertebrate! Don't worry, the black background is only temporary... ;-)

17.01.2022 I also do environmental reconstructions for palaeontologists. This album will be full of sites lost to history that have been rediscovered by real life researchers.

15.01.2022 Re-working an old friend of mine based on some better reference material, courtesy of a prominent palaeontologist. Forgive the placement of the logo - it's just to stop people stealing the image ;-)

15.01.2022 Some concept art I did for a recent commission. The skull is of an early, mammal-like reptile (Dicynodon lacerticeps, for those who are interested), while the greenery is suggestive of the region its remains can currently be found.

15.01.2022 Pen and ink study of a Comura sp. trilobite. Just a practise piece for later... a few adjustments need to be made, but it's not a bad practise run :-)

15.01.2022 A little more work done. Moved the nostril up and back towards the eye to be more consistent with the skull, and blunted the beak for the same reason. Also did a bit more 'feather work'. Pretty happy with this bit as of now, so the next installment should include a body...

15.01.2022 It's out, it's out! My first widely publicised piece of scientific illustration!!!

14.01.2022 Had a little bit of a go at 3D modelling software this afternoon. My rendition of a Phacops trilobite. Pretty happy with it, but it is a shame my laptop isn't quite fast enough for me to keep detailing it... Just when I got to those yummy schizocroal eyes, too! Once I sort that issue out, hopefully I'll be able to do some cool stuff!

14.01.2022 A new logo designed for the Global Ecosystems Monitoring Network, a non-profit NGO dedicated to providing the tools (free of charge) that any community might need to conduct their own ecosystem monitoring program: http://www.globalecosystemmonitoring.com/

13.01.2022 This day, Ryan found his motivation...

13.01.2022 Well, this is how Mister Blue looks now. I think this will be how he stays for a while. If doing this painting has taught me anything, it's that the people who manage to pull off a realistic representation of dappled light underwater must have spent years perfecting that skill... Definitely something to strive for!

13.01.2022 Did a little more work on the Xiphactinus. Just couldn't resist...

12.01.2022 Little dinos need love too... A progress shot of Conchoraptor gracilis. A 50cm tall oviraptorine from Mongolia. This little fella was strutting his stuff some 80 million years ago and shared his habitat with massive ankylosaurs, titanosaurs, and rather unimpressive ceratopsians.

11.01.2022 Finally finished the spiky, spiky Comura! Was going to put it on a new business card, but I suspect the detail's too fine... Oh well, T-shirts it is!

10.01.2022 Mr. Blue is now also available in T-shirt form! This one's on a white background, but you can pick whichever you prefer. There's also one made especially for black/dark backgrounds. http://www.redbubble.com//21943497-blue-to-the-bone-for-li

09.01.2022 The progress of a little something my sister asked me to draw for her wedding.

09.01.2022 Some exciting news to come! Just awaiting confirmation before posting about it here.... :-)

09.01.2022 This logo was commissioned by the 'Australian Sharks Information Systems' project. The client wanted a shark, a ray and a chimaera, representing the three major taxa that would be represented in the database. I modeled the shark off a lemon shark, the ray off a cownose ray, and the chimaera off a spotted ratfish. This logo was done using Photoshop.

09.01.2022 Did quite a lot more work on the raptor.

09.01.2022 Well, my name's Owen, and I'm an artistic gun for hire. I do scientific illustrations, logos and fine art. I'm still in the process of building my website, but rest assured, it'll be up soon! In the meantime, I'll keep you up to date on this page. ;-)

07.01.2022 Old school scientific illustrations using ink pens and stippling or graphite.

07.01.2022 And we're live! www.petrifiedpencils.com

06.01.2022 Hot off the press! Australian Flyfishing Outfitters' new black and white logo, now with a permit! Thanks for the commission, Dave!

06.01.2022 The finished product. The tree's about 50cm tall and was done using a 0.1 Felt tip pen. Time to rest the eyes now, I think...

04.01.2022 Fiddled with the tail and patterning and couldn't resist giving it a free trip home. Bit more work to do on it yet, but I think it's coming along nicely. :)

04.01.2022 And in gray-scale...

04.01.2022 Just couldn't resist doing more on it. I'd say it was finished at this stage, but you just never know what a fresh pair of eyes will see...

03.01.2022 Spiky, spiky trilobite now available on a range of merchandise! I'll be adding to the range you can all choose from. Hopefully, there'll be something for everyone! http://www.redbubble.com//21892138-spiky-spiky-trilobite-y

03.01.2022 So the news is... I've been commissioned by these guys to do some illustrations! Just met with them this afternoon to discuss the project! Wish me luck! :-) http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/news

02.01.2022 Bit of a surrealist drawing I did a few years back. Nothing but black biro. A friend now owns the original.

02.01.2022 Xiphactinus audax. A 5m long fanged tarpon with armoured scales and a tuna's tail - known to have swallowed prey items up to 2m in length. Probably a good thing they're extinct... Might pick out a few highlights here and there, but otherwise, I'm quite happy with this one.

01.01.2022 An oil painting of two golden trevally (Agnathodon speciosus) 'tailing' in the shallows. Australian Flyfishing Outfitters commissioned a print of this and awarded it as a prize during their invitational competition in 2013.
