18.01.2022 This month well be focusing on the challenges of looking after a senior pet. Its not always fun getting older, and our pets are no exception. As your dog or cat ages, youre likely to notice some changes in their health and behaviour. However, there are many ways to help your senior sidekick get the most out of life. Let's start with the basics about seniors:... Pets over 7 are typically considered seniors. The average lifespan for dogs is 12 years. Cats can live a little longer, averaging about 15 years (their lifespan is often extended when kept indoors). As your pet begins to age you may notice changes in their health and behaviour. This could include age related hearing loss, changes in vision, arthritis, reduced activity and lower energy levels. Preventable diseases like heart, kidney and dental disease can also occur. Its important to maintain good healthcare, an appropriate diet and regular exercise to make sure your senior pet stays at their best Remember to schedule regular examinations with your vet and keep up to date with vaccinations and parasite control.

17.01.2022 Under The Microscope - Dr Jenn, Veterinarian After years of working at a boring desk job, Dr Jenn decided to quit and apply for Vet School. She graduated from University of Sydney in 2016 and has been working at South Hedland Vet Hospital and Kingsmill Street Vet Clinic ever since. She enjoys the fast pace, working with a great team and meeting all the Hedland people and their furry family members. Her special interests include soft tissue surgery, diagnostic imaging and behaviour. She has a soft spot for working dog breeds, small fluffy dogs and ginger cats. In her spare time, she can be found in her natural habitat, drinking coffee and caring for the animals she keeps at home: her family and blue Heeler Django.

17.01.2022 Did you know that more than 80% of cats and dogs over the age of four suffer from dental disease? While most owners think bad breath is normal for their pet, thats not actually the case! Dental disease can cause a lot of discomfort, and may ultimately lead to more serious issues for your fluffy friend. Dental disease affects more than 80% of dogs and cats over age four. Just like humans, dogs and cats accumulate bacteria, debris and plaque from the food they eat ...on the outside of their teeth. When left uncleaned, this coating of germs hardens to form tartar which can irritate the gums and eventually lead to gingivitis and tooth loss. The bacteria can even enter the bloodstream, causing damage to kidneys and other vital organs. Look out for bad breath, discolouration of teeth, inflammation of the gums, difficulty eating and excessive drooling. By providing your pet with regular dental care (both at home and from your vet) dental disease is largely preventable.

15.01.2022 We love our dogs, even if they start to get a little rough around the edges as they age. Here are some tips for taking care of your senior dog. With a good diet, regular exercise and some care and attention, your faithful friend will be around for years to come! Dietary - muscle mass and organ function will decrease as your dog ages. Consider a high protein, lower carb diet.... Exercise - regular moderate exercise can help maintain muscle mass and keep joints mobile. Dental care - special dental diets, teeth brushing and dental treats are great ways to help prevent dental disease, which is common in seniors. Monitor for changes - detect problems early by keeping an eye out for any lumps and bumps and monitoring your dog for any changes in behaviour. Regular check ups - senior dogs are more susceptible to a number of illnesses and diseases. We recommend frequent check ups with your vet to detect any issues early on and ensure your senior dog can live as long and happy as possible.

Cold weather can be especially hard on senior cats and dogs as the drop in temperature can aggravate joints stiff with arthritis. Here are few tips to help keep your furry friend warm this winter:... Keep up a healthy exercise regime to encourage good circulation and develop muscle tone. Extra weight on your pet will only worsen joint pain. Make sure your pet has a warm, comfortable rest area away from drafts and elevated off cold, hard surfaces. You can place a pet heating pad in their bed to create a cosy and safe sleeping environment. A good pet-coat or jumper will help keep your pet warm. Just make sure it doesnt restrict their movement. Extra cuddles! Snuggle up with your pet and stay warm together. Theres no better way to keep the winter blues at bay!

Shampoo - Medicated or non-medicated shampoos can help soothe itchy skin, as well as treat pyoderma and parasitic infections. Never use human shampoo on your pet. Supplements - Some skin conditions may benefit from dietary/vitamin supplements. Work with your vet to find the suitable supplement and dosage. 07.01.2022 We always recommend bringing your pet to one of our clinics for an annual dental checkup with your vet. However, there are plenty of things you can do at home to keep on top of your pets oral health year-round! Brush their teeth - the best way to remove plaque and tartar build up at home. Buy an appropriate pet toothbrush and toothpaste, start with a gentle gum rub and work your way up to a vigorous brush. Feed dry food - dry food can help prevent plaque and tartar b...uildup by scraping against the teeth as your pet eats. If your pet needs some extra help we recommend Hills Prescription Diet t/d Dental Care. Dental chews - treat your pet to some VOHC approved dental chews designed to help remove plaque from teeth.
