23.01.2022 WARNING POST: Are you poisoning your pet? Do you know what is poisonous in your home and garden? Many pet owners dont realise they need to keep garden and household chemicals away from their pets. Dogs are more exposed to these chemicals than humans as they have direct ground contact with their paws, mouths, and noses.... Be careful where you store and use snail pellets, rat baits, insecticides and fertilisers (i.e. blood and bone), which can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, severe pancreatitis and possibly even death. Make sure your medicine cabinet is locked and food, alcohol and tobacco products are out of reach. Also consider the types of plants and vegetables growing in your garden. Some toxic plants include Brunfelsia, Liliums (in cats), Daffodils and Wandering Jew, as well as mushrooms and the tomato and potato plant. The orange seeds from Palm trees can also cause vomiting and liver failure. Dogs are also known to raid the garbage bin and get into the compost, potentially resulting in extreme sickness and possibly seizures. Always have your veterinarians and after-hours veterinary hospitals contact information handy maybe post it on the fridge. If you think your pet has ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian immediately. The sooner a pet poisoning is diagnosed, the easier, safer and less expensive it is to treat your beloved pet.
