23.01.2022 Mr. David Louise Pettavelleading a group of vigerons from Switzerland, established one of Australia’s earliest wine regions in Geelong and then Yarra Valley.

23.01.2022 #PettavelHistory Pettavel and the wine produced from their vineyards was such a success that plans for further vineyard development were made. The shortage of skilled labour became a major constraint to expansion. Pettavel returned to Switzerland to convince family and friends to join him to assist in the expansion of vineyards and wine production in Geelong. They sailed on the Evening Star in 1856. During the 19th century Geelong became the largest wine grape growing region in Victoria and one of the largest in Australia.

10.01.2022 PETTAVEL GEELONG VINEYARD, Geelong winery estate of 129 hectares is approximately 50 kilometers south west of Melbourne, 25 km south west to the Melbourne Avalon airport and close to the amenity of The City of Geelong. The property is located within the well-recognized wine region in the Moorabool Valley of Geelong with a cool climate. The Moorabool Valley’s Mediterranean climate makes great contribution to the growth of interesting and unique grape varieties. The property w...ith the northern boundary fronting Muhlebach Road comprises unequal parts of elevated, gently undulating land, dropping sometimes steeply to extensive arable alluvial flats along the Moorabool River for approximately 3 kilometers as rear southern boundary. Soils are mainly grey and brown loams and clay loams, with fragmented granite on some of the higher areas and grey alluvial soils on the river flats. See more

02.01.2022 #PettavelHistory The rapid expansion and development of the wine industry in Geelong halted abruptly in the late 1870’s with the passing of Mr David Pettavel and other driving pioneers. In addition, the arrival of phylloxera and its devastating effects on the vineyards. The gold rush proved a temptation for many vigneron’s and labour shortages prevented vineyards from being replanted.

02.01.2022 Mr David Pettavel was born in Boudry, Switzerland and emigrated to Australia in 1842 aboard the barque Platina. Upon landing at Port Phillip, Pettavel continued directly to the hills of Geelong. He set about planting the regions first vineyard. The ancient Australian soils, protected by their very remoteness from the ravages of disease, proved fertile and suitable for young grape vines.
