25.01.2022 Nina is looking for an amazing pet home. If you or anyone you know is looking for a small quiet little girl, let me know She dosnt want to be a race dog. Sh...e wants to play with her toys and snuggle up on a couch. She is quiet and calm. Walks on a lead really well. Travels really well (sleeps as soon as she gets in car) she loves chicken necks and a good scratch under her chin. She will make the perfect pet See more
25.01.2022 We need your help! Each spring, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation, hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat. Bogong Moths usually fly to meet ...Mountain Pygmy-possums in the billions, but this hasn’t happened in the past three years. Our scientists want to know where the moths are. If you see a Bogong Moth at your home this spring, take a photo and upload it to Zoos Victoria's Moth Tracker: https://bit.ly/3caC9s4 Thanks for your help, Federation University Australia!
24.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why they cut a mules tail in "bells"? Back in the day.....the Army used mules in service. A green mule had its tail shaved. By the time ...the mule was broke to pack, a 'bell' was trimmed in the tail. Once broke to drive, a second bell was added below the first. Broke to ride, a third tassel was trimmed below the second. Thus, a three-bell mule was a well-schooled animal. This way, when looking at a corral full of unknown mules, it was easy to identify which one to select for the job at hand! See more
23.01.2022 *****Extremely import FYI**** ***confronting photo attached (NOT one of my horses but shared with permission)*** So I learnt this the other day and was so shock...ed I’d never heard about it so I want to share it with you all. Did you know that avocado is extremely toxic to horses! So much so that it’s generally fatal. Everything about it the plant, the leaves, the fruit, the pip, even the soil it’s grown in are all toxic. Attached is a photo of a horse that had not long been in contact with it. The reaction was far worse by the time the vet got there. This is extremely time sensitive so if you think your horse may have been exposed call your vet. I hope this knowledge helps to make more people aware even if it only saves one horse. ***UPDATE Both the black and chestnut in background were effected. Atm they are alive but still being very closely monitored and treated. The black displayed the worst response but has so far dealt with it better. Has lost a lot of weight fighting the toxins. The chestnut didn’t display as badly but has really been effected by the toxins. She has fallen away to skin and bones. Both are still fighting and vets are hopeful the worst is over but the recovery is long so totally depends on the horses. They are getting all the care possible to try and help them through it. AGAIN these aren’t my horses they are a friends neighbours who I have permission from to share this post for awareness. Thank you to everyone that has shared this post

21.01.2022 It’s been a difficult evening here after the loss of a beautiful foal to the latest rescues that landed themselves on our doorstep and straight to our heart! Saving the Mum that would’ve most certainly suffered a different fate, is a bittersweet victory to these precious ponies... please hug your fur babies and keep them warm and close... they don’t ask for anything more than love... an enormous heartfelt thank you to Michelle and Monique Scoble who raced to my side and gave their best and every effort
20.01.2022 If you’ve not already been introduced... this is Iris- our first ISO baby... Iris came to us as a stray kitten in need of TLC in April... she was around 6 weeks of age... that makes her only 8 months old and whilst she was booked in to be desexed next week, she has just came into season... it’s extremely common at this time of year for this occur, even when cats are still quite young... Iris is in lockdown safe and sound until she can have her big day but unfortunately many y...oung cats are less fortunate and find themselves pregnant before they understand why... signs to watch out for can be only mild more cuddly behaviours up to constant crying and rolling along the floor... scratching a cat in season near the base of the tail will usually result in them raising their bottoms up and this is a certainty that your cat needs to be restricted so as not to bring many more unwanted little souls into the world... if you would like kittens, visit a shelter first and check out all the poor innocent babes that may not see another day See more
20.01.2022 I'm not sure who wrote this but it is funny and I'm sure some of people can relate to it! HOW TO GIVE YOUR CAT A PILL: 1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the cr...ook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. 2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. 3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. 4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. 5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden. 6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously. 7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. 8) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill inside end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. 9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. 10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band. 11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. 12) Call fire brigade to retrieve the f------ cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap. 13) Tie the little b**tard's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak filet. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down. 14) Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table. 15) Arrange for RSPCA to collect "mutant cat from hell" and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters. HOW TO GIVE A DOG A PILL: 1) Wrap it in cheese.
18.01.2022 PUPDATE [ON HOLD] Howloo, I'm Bear and this is my best furend Buddy, we're Border Collie & Rottweiler X seniors at 10 years old. My best friend Buddy and I..., were transferred to Lort Smith from another shelter to better our chances of finding a permanent new home where we can relax and live out our golden years. The team here absolutely adore both of us, they say we are such gentle old souls. We cannot bare to be without one another, so we must go to our new home together. Our perfect new home would be quiet and calm. Somewhere we can relax, go on short leisurely strolls with our new companions and have a safe and warm bed to curl up in. It would be best that we are the only animals in the house, as Buddy can get a little nervous around new dogs, and he still has his innate instinct to want chase small animals. I can be a little excitable around new dogs and at times will vocalise out of excitability. Buddy is a shy with new people, so will take a little while longer to warm to people than I will. I am quite confident and laid back. I hear the lovely staff talking to each other about Buddy and I, saying how they love my gorgeous smile and the way I look into their eyes lovingly and how Buddy is the most beautiful, gentle and sweet soul. Medical notes: Buddy and I do have medical issues, which I suppose is just a part of getting older. We both have a few fatty lumps but they are benign in nature. Both Buddy and I have arthritis that requires medication to help soothe our joints and will enable us move around a lot more comfortably. Our senses have slightly deteriorated due to old age, however we do not need any treatment for these at this time. I have unfortunately been diagnosed with spondylosis which effects my movement, so the vets have prescribed me steroids to help ease any pain. I will require steroid injections with a specific vet every 3-6 months. I know that’s a lot to take in, but the friendly shelter staff will be able to discuss our medical issues with you further. Adoption details: Speak to our Lort Smith Adoption Centre staff for more information about this animal or visit www.lortsmith.com https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/815037 Nth Melbourne
17.01.2022 A really important message for people who choose to let their dogs walk off leash in public spaces... COPIED: Thought this was absolutely brilliant!! The other ...day I was at the local public park (not a dog park, but dogs are allowed there). We were walking along in a high movement area so I had my dog on a leash. Another dog, off leash, sees us and starts approaching. My dog needs her space so we start moving away, but the dog got to us before we could leave. My dog was stressing a little so I politely said to the woman, sorry my dog doesn't want to play and ushered her dog away. Her dog gets the message and moves on. Quite good, right? Here comes the juicy part: As I’m leaving the owner comes to me with a speech more or less like this: Hey, if your dog is nervous and doesn’t even want to play with other dogs, go somewhere else! Don’t come to the park and ruin other dogs fun. I heard this and a wave of fury started taking over, but suddenly I think I had a lightbulb moment and switched gears completely. With the biggest, friendliest smile, I opened my arms as wide as I could and said Ohhhhh! Come here... I want to give you a BIG hug! With panic in her eyes she backs up, speechless and quickly starts walking away. I said "Hey, don’t run, I’m so friendly, come on, I only want to give you a hug! I’m friendly I promise... I just want to Hug You!" Still speechless and backing away with terror now, I said "Wait, You don’t want my friendly hug?" She yelled No! I said "Well neither does my dog! Have a nice day.!!!" As I walked away, I saw her just standing there, speechless and she was leashing her dog! I think I’ll try this approach more often See more

14.01.2022 ** UPDATE: RIP SWEET SOUL ** It's official. The seventh horse in as many years has been killed in this year's Melbourne Cup. Anthony Van Dyck was only 5 years... old. Today he ran in the Melbourne Cup. Now he is dead. No horse deserves to die for gambling profits. Yet it happens year after year after year. While the scenes today were confronting, nobody should be surprised. A racehorse dies every three days on Australian racetracks. The only difference is on Melbourne Cup Day, the whole country is watching. Rest in Peace, Anthony Van Dyck. We are so sorry. @Andy Meddick MP --------------------------------------------------------- BREAKING NEWS 5-year-old stallion Anthony Van Dyck has injured himself in the running of the Melbourne Cup!! Waiting for an update, but it really didn’t look good Thank you Andy Meddick MP for reporting this. 08.01.2022 Elvis Presly had around 20 horses during his lifetime. He bought horses for his friends and bodyguards, It didn't matter if they wanted one or not, they were ge...tting a horse! Elvis got into horses like he got into everything; he eased into it right over the top. Elvis cared deeply after his horses. After a hard ride, Elvis would walk his horse three times longer than necessary to cool him out, just to be sure the horse was safe to return to pasture. He was fastidious about the barn area, and personally marked each person's tack hook and stall Daddy's, Priscilla's, Mine The labels remain in the barn to this day. One of his favourite breeds was Tennessee Walking horse. The last horse he purchased, passed away in 2005 at the age of 32 years old, a Tannessee Walking stallion named Ebony's Double purchased in 1975. While, one of his horses, Mare Ingram lived to the age of 50! His personal mount was a Rising Sun, a big, beautiful palomino Quarter Horse. Sometimes Elvis would ride down to the gates of Graceland and show off for his fans, sit and chat from the saddle, and sign autographs. Then to their gasping admiration, he'd take off on Rising Sun at a dead gallop back towards the barn. Elvis was so attached to Bear, a Tennessee Walking Horse, that when the horse died while Elvis was on tour, no one would tell him until he got home, fearing how the news would devastate him.

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, It's Nikki, just a not so little post from my wall to share, hopefully you see the funny side of it. My darling boy, you are home and complete. O...ne interesting thing that came from this is that Subbie's vessel is made from the same wood as dad's coffin was made from, and we did not personally select/organise anything to do with his vessel except the engraving. For those who don't know, Subbie came home without a photo as my silly mind didn't help me out in order to send a photo. So today mum and I had to work out how to get this vessel which with Subbie in there weighs near on 30kgs+ so we got it onto the dining room and upside down. Mum and I both having the same image of Subbie electing to be scattered across the dining table and floor this is our luck I am talking about, by the way, who is coming for dinner at our place next? I promise it's clean. We thought we were making progress but the embroidered bag came out on its own so we had to work together to get his ashes out, petrified of somehow doing something wrong and him going everywhere. Then without even thinking, it just came out "well it's the same colour as subbie" mum with half the bag of ashes out of the vessel looked at me through her eyebrows, to my very serious face and we both cracked up laughing so hard we nearly dropped him. Finally we got Subbie out to get this photo in, mum puts the photo in while I am sitting having a break before we have round 2 with Subbie to get him back in. Just before we went to grab his ashes I said to mum, "hang on a second, that is going to be upside down once we put the vessel right side up" sure enough the photo was upside down had we got Subbie back in and THEN realised, Subbie would be looking at the world upside down because there was no way we were doing that process again, we had already tested our luck once. But we fixed it in time . I have also included photos of some other special items they included. The shoe leaning up against his vessel is one of the shoes they took off for me, so we are blessed to have a plate (race shoe) from his win in the Melbourne Cup and his last ever shoes. The last photo is there as for those who may never have met Subbie in person or did but just didn't notice it, quite a number of years ago now (it could have been back in 2000 when Subbie and dad were leaving to go to Dubai, but that is off the top of my head), Subbie was blessed and presented with a Saint Christopher medal which he wore on his special halter for outings and such to protect him on his journeys, it seemed to do a pretty good job. I will get a better photo of it at a later date, but I wanted to show it on him. I do need to add, this is not the normal process, to my knowledge the photo is put in before you get your pet back. But somewhere along the lines Subbie's vessel was changed from a plain wooden box with a plaque to a photo vessel which is beautiful. We would like to sincerely thank with all that we have, the Victorian Equine Group for making this whole situation as easy as it possibly could be and kindly supporting us every step of the way. We would also sincerely like to thank with all we have left, Edenhills Pet Cremation Melbourne who from every step from picking him up so humanely through to dropping him off, you also helped make this step in which we have never before encountered, as easy as it possibly could be given the circumstances. Subbie's vessel is beautiful and you personally messaging and supporting us through this painstakingly difficult time with the loss of both of our boys. I miss you my dear boys! Our hearts ache, the tears flow, but they are where they belong, together forever, forever at peace and pain free. See more
05.01.2022 Is it a bee? Is it a wasp? WORSE, it’s a bot fly! We’ve noticed that the bot flies have been out in force this season. Now is a good time to worm your horse for... bots (and other intestinal parasites too) as we have had a couple of frosts which the adult bot flies do not survive. You can see in the second photo the damage that migrating bot larvae can do to a horses tongue. OUCH! The third image shows a more developed stage of bot larvae that were found in a mare’s manure the morning after she was given a wormer
04.01.2022 Okay, if this doesn't put a smile on your face, there's something wrong with you :-).
02.01.2022 COVID.... these are our covid babies... Iris the cat came to us during our last lockdown period as a stray and Houdini is our pup we bred during this current lockdown... I write this post to spread awareness as our State of Victoria begins its journey to normality... If you have covid babies like us and will be transitioning back to work or school, please be mindful that your fur babies are not used to life without you... think about leaving them for short periods with stimulation in order to prepare them for your absence... unwanted behaviour is going to occur and it’s not their fault... they will stress and fret and could destroy things in frustration... please be kind to your fur family and show them some regard for being by your side through this difficult journey...
01.01.2022 Alright folks, this is going to be a very difficult story to tell, but I feel compelled to share this information. This past week has been an extremely difficul...t journey for us. Our sweet baby Lily got into one of my houseplants and ended up fighting for her life at the emergency vet for nearly a week. She is now home with a feeding tube and a medication schedule that spans from 7 AM until 12 AM daily. There have been many tears shed, dollars spent, and guilt felt... all because of a $5 plant. I’d like to spread the word about this houseplant because I had no idea when I purchased it from a big box garden center last summer that this little 6-inch plant would become my nightmare. The Sago Palm is a common house plant and landscaping plant native to tropical regions. All parts of the plants are extremely toxic to humans and animals causing liver failure and death from even minimal exposure. All parts includes the trunk, roots, leaves, and small berry-like seeds that can develop on mature plants. I have seen this plant for sale on the shelves at Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot sitting among other harmless household plants with zero warning label attached. ***Update: On Saturday, May 16, Lily passed away in our arms. She fought hard, loved hard, and gave us a couple butt wiggles just before she just couldn’t fight any longer. We loved her so very much and gave her all the love and care in the weeks since the incident we could possibly give. We are truly devastated. If you are a houseplant lover, please research your house plants prior to purchasing. Even if you think the house plant is in a secure location, mischievous little paws may still get into trouble. Feel free to share this story. You may just save a life. https://www.aspca.org//animal-p/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants
