20.01.2022 #PHAMAPlus is excited to support our #Vanuatu partner South Seas Commodities (SSC) in their efforts to improve kava quality and ensure food safety by obtaining a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification. #HAACP certification is important for businesses like SSC to meet international food safety and quality management system standards, allowing it to export to target markets. We’re pleased to work with the Vanuatu Bureau of Standards to assist SSC a...dapt their premises to improve their kava quality and meet HACCP certification requirements. SSC Director Michael Louze has been busy working on his HACCP documentation as well as minor infrastructure improvements. Pictured here is an improved version of his dryer (although not quite finished) which he is trialling out on his premises in Port Vila. He has also sent materials to his agents to put together a similar dryer on the island. The dryer will assist farmers to improve the quality of kava supplied to SSC. 19.01.2022 Women in biosecurity are breaking barriers and changing mindsets. Bridgit Kavana, a senior scientist at the National Animal Health & Food Testing Laboratory (NAHFTL), is one of six female staff at NAHFTL who works tirelessly to ensure agriculture and livestock products in PNG are safe and healthy for consumption. Bridgit encourages women to work in the field of parasitology and biosecurity. ... There are many cultural forces that can stand in the way of females entering this career path. But women who stand firm despite the challenges are some of those we see proudly breaking barriers and changing mindsets. 17.01.2022 Sweet meleni (watermelon) from #Tonga ready for export to NZ! Through our partnership with leading Tongan horticultural export company Nishi Trading, #PHAMAPlus is proud to continue supporting increased exports of watermelon from Tonga. Tonga has an existing export pathway for watermelons to NZ. Shipments resumed in late 2010 and demand continues to grow with a forecast market value of $2.5 million Pa’anga or about A$1.35 million per year.... PHAMA Plus’ support to revive exports of this widely-grown crop began in 2011 with efforts to improve quality and meet biosecurity protocols and to ensure the pathway remained open. Watermelon exports increased from 86 tonnes in 2010 to 400 tonnes in 2017 and to a target of 500 tonnes this year, with an estimated worth TOP$1.35m. Last week our High Commissioner joined farming and industry representatives to learn more about ASF and to witne...ss the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding between PHAMA Plus and Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock that will strengthen Solomon Islands’ preparedness to any possible incursion of ASF. The ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. This disease has been spreading around the world and has now been detected in Papua New Guinea. ASF does not cause disease in humans or other animals, but can wipe out an entire population of pigs once the virus infects and spreads. Through PHAMA Plus, the New Zealand and Australian governments are assisting Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock to boost Solomon Islands’ preparedness and response capacity to ASF. The aim of this intervention is to support biosecurity and animal health agencies to deliver biosecurity measures that support preparation and prevention of ASF arriving in Solomon Islands.. 11.01.2022 Biosecurity officers play a critical role in ensuring our borders are protected from #biosecurity threats, as well as strengthening #marketaccess facilitation functions. #PHAMAPlus today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji BAF to support and strengthen Fiji’s preparedness against any possible incursion of #AfricanSwineFever #ASF. While Fiji is currently free of ASF, the pig killing disease poses a significant social, econo...mic and cultural threat to the region, particularly to the approximately 30,000 households in #Fiji that raise pigs for their livelihoods. With the support of #Australia and #NewZealand, the MoU covers technical inputs and support in terms of BAF’s physical and human resources to be better equipped for any potential response to ASF and other biosecurity threats. 11.01.2022 #PHAMAPlus is pleased to have hosted members of the PNG Women in Coffee Association (#WICA) at a two-day consultative workshop in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province. The focus of the meeting was to develop a five-year strategic plan that solidifies WICA as the national platform for #women in #PNG’s #coffee sector. We’re working with WICA to develop a strategic plan that will guide the development of the organisation and strengthen support and representation of women co...ffee growers, helping to improve trade in export and domestic market. With over 6,680 members of women exporters, processors, growers, and co-operative groups, the association expects an increase in membership with the soon to be established PNG WICA Secretariat. WICA Executive Officer, Ms. Catherine Piaga said: Developing the PNG WICA Strategic Plan is a major achievement in recognition of all the contribution of the women in the coffee sector. She also acknowledged the continuing support of the Coffee Industry Corporation. The official launching of the Strategic Plan is scheduled for early 2021. 11.01.2022 While battling the COVID-19 Pandemic, a new animal killing disease also emerged in Papua New Guinea African Swine Fever #ASF. ASF killed close to 400 pigs in Mendi in the Southern Highlands Province in March 2020, prompting an immediate response from the National Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA). The disease kills almost all infected pigs (both domestic and wild) but does not affect humans. Strategically placed checkpoints were set up to stop the tran...sportation of possibly infected pork products. Pigs were also swabbed and tested for ASF, and experts were sent into remote villages to investigate and teach safeguarding methods. Ellencia Kingal, a Technical Officer with NAQIA, was transferred from her usual laboratory work to a field team conducting tests and analysis in remote parts of the Highlands in an effort to contain the disease and protect livelihoods of rural communities. 09.01.2022 More coffee farming families in PNG will be able to receive the Family Farm Teams (FFT) training that will boost opportunities for them to participate as equal players as coffee farmers, coffee processors and coffee experts. With the support of PHAMA Plus, Kosem Limited has delivered their first FFT training to Group Market Centres (GMCs) and farmers in Banz, Jiwaka Province. The objective of the training is to develop a group of trainers who can offer the FFT training direct...ly to farming families across Kosem GMCs to help communities develop their coffee gardens and other agricultural activities sustainably and productively. Two further training sessions will be held for farming families to help both women and men work together to develop skills to support their family during farm planning and development. This training will help enhance the development of coffee production in Papua New Guinea. The new trainers will become a resource within the community by contributing positively to assisting other coffee-producing communities in Jiwaka Province and the country using the techniques, skills and knowledge gained from the FFT Training. 07.01.2022 Tagio tumas to the #NewZealand High Commissioner to #SolomonIslands HE Georgina Roberts and colleagues for joining #PHAMAPlus during a visit to Cathliro and the Solomon Islands Timber Processors and Exporters Association (#SITPEA) site last week. The #PHAMAPlus team was honoured to have shown the NZ delegation its support towards the development of the #cocoa and #sawntimber sectors in the Solomon Islands through close collaboration with key partners such as #Cathliro... and #SITPEA. At Cathliro, the delegation was shown how its renowned chocolates are made using innovative #cocoa processing methods and technology. And of course, the highlight was a chocolate tasting session organised by Cathliro owner Diana Yates and her awesome team! The NZ delegation also learned of the exciting developments of the country’s sawn timber industry at the SITPEA timber yard. 05.01.2022 Trudging up and down the hills in Papua New Guinea’s highland provinces, Elaine Kagena is helping to contain the spread of the African swine fever one of the greatest animal health threat to the country in years. As a member of PNG’s National Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Authority’s (NAQIA) biosecurity team, she is helping to prevent ASF from spreading from the declared disease areas in the PNG upper highlands to the rest of PNG. A threat which could potentially wipe o...ut close to 3.5 million pigs nationwide costing PGK12.63 billion. She works with local communities to help them better understand what causes ASF, how it spreads, and what people must do to stop further spread.
