23.01.2022 Vice Presidential profile - Elsie Rodgers Elsie joined Phantoms as an inaugural member of our Women's Premier team and as a general Committee Member in 2018 and this year is stepping up into the role as Vice President. Along with the rest of the Committee, she is keen to ensure that Phantoms continue to develop a balanced gender approach to all aspects of club operations, especially when it comes to leadership. Since relocating to Bendigo in 2018, Elsie has been involved with... the BVA as a player, coach, umpire and Association Secretary, helping develop and administer local competition and representative teams. Elsie brings to Phantoms Committee experience from other organisations including: Bendigo Volleyball Association; Southern Cross Cobras; Chiropractic Student Association of RMIT where she was President from 2016-2018 and awarded RMIT Universities Student Leader of the Year in 2018; Student and Practice Advisory Committee member to the Australian Chiropractors Association. Elsie started her playing career in Year 7 at Billanook College in the B team and went onto captain the schools team at AVSC Honours level. In that time she progressed through the Eastern Institute of Volleyball and the Falcons Volleyball Club; gained selection for state teams from U/15 through to U/19 winning Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (3 as captain); and was selected as a national representative in Australian Youth and Junior teams between 2008-2012. Before playing with Phantoms and winning Division 1 Victorian Country Championships with Bendigo, Elsie played in the Premier Women's team at Southern Cross Cobras. She cites her greatest achievements in volleyball as captaining Victoria, representing Australia and taming the wild man that is Kane Rutledge. Elsie's vision for Phantoms is... "to continue to create opportunities and provide a pathway for rural athletes to participate in high-level volleyball. To facilitate the development of our athletes (in particular our juniors) while providing a fun and nurturing environment for players, coaches and spectators (members) to be a part of - ultimately, I want to win and have fun!"

21.01.2022 Committee Member profile - Michael Mayes Michael first joined the Phantoms in 2014 by accident, playing a match in Bendigo as a fill-in. Since then, he hasn't missed a beat, playing in the Premier Men's team (except for an extended forced stint on the sidelines after chasing ca$h and an oval ball, but he prefers not to talk about that). Michael's involvement with volleyball stretches back over ten years now, playing the majority of his career in the Bendigo Volleyball Associ...ation and participating in a plethora of country tournaments. This is his first experience holding a Committee position, but Michael feels it is the right time to give back to the club, and acknowledges the founding principles of Phantoms to not only provide a playing pathway for regional athletes, but also one for the next generation of coaches, referees and administrators of our sport. Michael's greatest achievements in volleyball include travelling to Thailand in 2016 as an assistant coach with the Australian Men's Youth Team and consistently winning country tournaments with good friends under the moniker of Hickman's Warriors. His vision for Phantoms is "to provide a high-level sporting experience to anyone who wishes to play. There is a limit to how competitive the level of play in our regional Associations' can reach and Phantoms provides the opportunity for players to compete against the best teams in the state. It goes further than just volleyball though, and in my eyes Phantoms is a people-first club, supporting each other and providing an environment welcoming to all. With the strange year we've had, I would like everyone reading this please consider what they can do to reach out and engage with someone else at the club. As our members are predominantly based in country Victoria, there are many people who may still feel quite isolated. So send someone a message, tag them in the Facebook post, and get a conversation going to see how they are doing."

11.01.2022 Hello Everyone, Today exactly 10 years ago Phantoms played their first game of State League. Here is the preview to a presentation that will be made some point in the near future. In 2020, Phantoms were going to be playing in Horsham and hosting a 10 year reunion function on the Saturday night. Unfortunately we can’t do that at this moment in time, so David Berry has been able to chase up some of the original 2011 team, some award winners, premiership players, administrator...s and volunteers to help make a presentation. Back then Phantoms had one team in division 2. In 2019 Phantoms had 9 teams competing! So a lot has changed in a decade. Get ready for the full length video coming your way and in the meantime, all past and present players, even opposition players, feel free to leave a comment of your favourite Phantom moment(s) below. I’m sure there are heaps!

11.01.2022 Thank you to all those who have purchased an Associate Membership this week! A great way to stay connected and keep our great club thriving until we can hit the court again. Our target is 100 so if you haven’t signed up yet, get onto it this weekend...

09.01.2022 Presidential Profile - Ben Hassell I have been involved with Phantoms since 2013 as a player. I was originally was part of the squad who unsuccessfully campaigned to play state league in 2009 and then returned a couple years later to play again. I have also been a Committee member for the past 5 years, which included a year as Vice President. I have been involved in my local association, Volleyball Ballarat, as a committee member for the last 7 years which has include stints ...as Vice President and currently as Treasurer. I was basically born into volleyball, as my dad Peter was a founding father of the Phantoms Volleyball Club back in the mid-70s, attending tournaments as a spectator in my early years. I began playing volleyball in primary school and having been competing at tournaments for Volleyball Ballarat since the late 90s. I played a couple of season with Renegades in State League Honours prior to the founding of our club. My greatest achievement in volleyball would have to be wining in the 2005 Horsham Tournament Division 2 with a Phantoms Family team. My Nan had passed away only week’s prior and to honour her by not only playing together but wining as a family is a moment I will cherish forever. My vision for Phantoms is for the club to continually offer access to high level volleyball for athletes in Western Victoria. My hope is for the club to perform both on and off the court to the highest possible standards. I want our teams in all division competing in finals and for the Phantoms Volleyball Club to be respected name throughout Volleyball in Victoria. For me personally, when my time comes to move on from my position, I hope I have helped the club progress to better place than when I walked into it.

07.01.2022 Following the Premiers announcement today confirming the further gradual lifting of restrictions, you might hear indoor sports are allowed to return with limited numbers. Volleyball Victoria had a delegates meeting last week and discussed various options for a possible return to play for State League competition. Unfortunately until there is further clarity around stadiums reopening and what constitutes an undivided indoor space we are no closer to answer. Watch this space and the website in the coming week(s) for up to date information and keep yourself in shape. We will have approximately 4 weeks notice if competition can resume! Stay safe.

02.01.2022 Committee Member profile - Chris Hermans Chris has been involved with Phantoms for 6 years, initially as a supporting parent, but was encouraged to get more involved and took on a coaching role in 2015 with the Division 2 Men. He really enjoys the social side of Phantoms and the great people that make up the club from right across our region. The depth of experience and personalities is immense and Chris says "from a personal point of view, being involved with Phantoms has ...provided and supported me with development opportunities as a coach to the game that I would not have had exposure to otherwise." Chris has been involved in his local association (Sunraysia) as a parent, player, coach and committee member and has served on the Phantoms Committee for 4 years. He as experience as a Committee member, Secretary and President of Sunraysia Volleyball Association until 2019, along with many other professional and voluntary committees at a local and state level. Chris's playing career began in Ararat in the late 80’s before taking a hiatus in the 90’s when he moved to Mildura to pursue his professional career in the health industry and shift work made it too difficult to continue playing. His interest was rekindled through his sons involvement around 10 years ago, all of whom have represented Phantoms over the last few years. Chris's greatest achievement(s) in volleyball are: Playing a game of volleyball where the whole team were members of his family; Winning a Silver medal as coach of the under 15 boys at AJVC; Winning medals coaching teams at Country Champs; Winning this years Seaside Tournament coaching the Phantoms Div 1 Men’s team; Being involved with the Australian Junior Development program and being invited to tour Thailand last year as an assistant development coach. Chris's vision for Phantoms is "to continue to work with the Associations to provide the opportunity for country athletes and coaches etc to participate in a higher level of volleyball whilst maintaining a high level of competitiveness."
