11.01.2022 Want to know more about Endometriosis? This month we ask consulting in-house naturopath Eloise Charleson. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ENDOMETRIOSIS? Pain, moderate to severe is one of the most common symptoms experienced by women with endometriosis. The pain is caused by the endometrial lesions bleeding during the period. However most women also suffer acyclical pelvic pain. Even bowel and bladder pain can be involved through the month or during the period. Severe fati...gue is also much more common in women with endometriosis as is depression. WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? Current treatment strategies include surgery and pain and hormone medications. Surgery helps pain in the short term with reoccurrence rates of 40% to 50% at five years. Pain medication, the pill and hormonal treatments have limited effectiveness with the rate of discontinuation of treatment at 25% to 50%. The result of this is that 75% of women with endometriosis in Australia look for alternative approaches. One in five women use herbal medicine as their treatment option. Herbal medicine has been used for hundreds of year to treat hormonal difficulties. Herbal medicine and food based supplements can support the bodys regulation of oestrogen levels as well as the immune response involved in endometriosis. 03.01.2022 Pharmacists will be able to supply ongoing prescription medications to patients whose prescriptions have run out, the state government has announced. WA Premier... Mark McGowan said the Chief Health Officer has exercised powers available to him under the Public Health Act, to allow pharmacists to supply ongoing prescription medicines under the following conditions: patients have already been prescribed with a medicine; their prescriptions have run out, and; it is not possible for them to see a doctor in time to obtain a new prescription for ongoing supply. "In these circumstances, if the pharmacist is satisfied that treatment is urgently needed they may dispense a standard one-month quantity of the medicine," Mr McGowan said. "This is effectively immediately and applies to all prescription medicines that require long-term, ongoing treatment, with the exception of controlled drugs." The Premier said the changes were not an opportunity for patients to stockpile medications, but were to ensure patients health was not compromised as a result of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. "There will be strict limits on the additional amount available. Patients requiring additional supplies should attend their regular pharmacy and take along proof of prior use of the medication such as a recent empty packet. They should also be able to produce valid ID and a Medicare Card," he said.
