11.01.2022 Meet Kayla Evans who graduated with a BPharm in 2017 from University of Canberra. We are so proud to see Kayla graduate and find employment in pharmacy - it hasn't been an easy road! Kayla will allude to this below. What attracted you to pursue a degree in Pharmacy? I began my career in pharmacy at 16, working part time as an assistant in a local pharmacy during high school. Growing up I was fascinated by anything medical (and still am), and exposure to the day-to-day practi...ce made me realise that Pharmacists play a critical role in patient care. Once I commenced my degree, I also realised there are many other career opportunities out there with a pharmacy degree besides the more traditional options of community or hospital pharmacy (e.g industry or regulatory) and even if you find an alternative path, the skills, knowledge and thought processes taught throughout the degree are highly transferrable to other roles. Tell us about your learning experience at UC Pharmacy. Initially I started studying a Bachelor of Science as I wasn’t totally set on a career choice straight out of high school, and transferred into Pharmacy after a year spent studying everything from chemistry to forensic science and public health. I have found the course content extremely satisfying after spending much of my life as a patient it was very interesting to finally learn about things from the other side. University and faculty staff have been extremely supportive and accommodating of any additional requirements associated with my disability (I have Cerebral Palsy) and although it has been a very steep learning curve, I have enjoyed the experience immensely. What did you think are the best parts of the UC Pharmacy course so far? Hands down my favourite parts of the course were the clinical placements. The opportunity to see cases from the textbook come to life is priceless from a learning perspective, and reminded me exactly what I was working towards. In a close second, the relationships (both professional and personal) I developed while at university are ones that will last for many years to come. What are you doing now? I am currently completing internship (expected to be finished later this year), doing 50% of my hours at the Therapeutic Goods Administration, and the other 50% at Capital Chemist Calwell. Although it is rather busy, I am really enjoying the breadth of experience and knowledge I am gaining, as well as the opportunity to see pharmacy from multiple perspectives. 06.01.2022 Meet Ben Marks who graduated from University of Canberra with a BPharm in 2019 What attracted you to pursue a degree in Pharmacy? ... - Medicine and magic are often used synonymously, naturally I was intrigued. Tell us about your learning experience at UC Pharmacy. - The pharmacy degree provided a strong theoretical basis, which were challenged in practical contexts during our final years of our study. Navigationism (a learning paradigm all students should learn) provided me with the adaptability to respond appropriately to the range of clinical situations I encounter as a Pharmacist. What did you think were the best parts of the UC Pharmacy course? - During such a rigorous degree, the UC pharmacy discipline became a second family. This was particularly refreshing as I’d relocated to complete my university studies. Building a strong rapport with lecturers and peers paved the way to further develop professional connections across Canberra. I was also supported and encouraged to explore pharmacy in a range of clinical contexts such as the Snowy Mountains and Broken Hill. What did you do when you graduated? - I substituted the books for a couple of beverages at Spilt Milk, then relished in a couple of weeks at the coast (wearing sunscreen regularly of course). I made a brief trip home to Leeton to see my family before delving into my intern year late November. What are you doing now? (current employment) - I currently work at Life Pharmacy in Weston, affiliates of Flannery’s Pharmacy who were named 2019 Pharmacy of the Year. I work under the guidance of UC alumni and pharmacy intern of the year, Tim Stewart, and founder of Men’s Health Down Under, Brad Butt. I’m constantly challenged as an intern in order to provide quality professional based services for our patients. These include specialised Men’s Health Down Under initiatives and services such as advanced rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from prostate surgery. Why should people pursue a career in Pharmacy? - Pharmacists are among the most trusted and ethical professions. The average Australian visits the pharmacy 14 times per year, which perfectly position Pharmacists in improving the health of the nation. Along with the traditional education and provision of medicines there has been a drastic expansion of professional health services in pharmacy, further enabling us to prevent or reform disease to optimise patient health outcomes.
