23.01.2022 This is Tennessee Whiskey by - among a fair few artists - Chris Stapleton. A handful of people asked me if I could play this over the last 18 months or so, and each time I said ‘sorry, I can’t.’ Finally someone said ‘it’s got two chords.’ So it turned out I could play it. Singing it was a bit harder but by my general standards I think it sounds ok. Forgive the shit solo.
21.01.2022 David Bowie and I, with my rank melon in all its glory, say ‘up yours’ to anyone that doesn’t get to the Postie from 9-12 tonight as I make the old ears bleed.
19.01.2022 Joey - Concrete Blonde. Several things: 1. Im not a woman so I don’t sing it like the band 2. Like every song I play, I sped up like a monkey on the crystal pistol I really like the song though
16.01.2022 Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheehan Yeah a lot of people think he’s a wanker. The Sea Eagles cheerleaders like it in Mudgee last weekend though and I more or less got the solo right so that is good enough for me
15.01.2022 Nothing screams ‘Trans-Tasman classic’ like a song about an ex-con sizing up whether the object of his desire is of legal age. Are You Old Enough? - Dragon, at the Metro in Orange on Friday night. Like literally every song I’ve ever done, I sped up and played it too fast.
14.01.2022 Short and sweet - kind of the opposite to a standard Phat Boy gig. This is She’s Like A Comet by probably me favourite 90s band Jebediah. I’ll try and rip the ears off it, as it were, at the Metro in Orange tonight from 8pm
10.01.2022 Freshmen by The Verve Pipe
10.01.2022 ‘Hey Jude’ by some band from Liverpool at the Rag and Famish on Saturday night. Note the level of improvement in the singing when I wasn’t doing it.
08.01.2022 This is one of the most beautiful Australian songs ever written - Because I Love You by Masters Apprentices. If I’m not mistaken it was used on an ad for the Australian defence force at some point. Hope I did it a bit of justice at least.
07.01.2022 This is an actual photo of people trying to get away from my last gig. I’ll be giving the general public another chance to exercise tonight from 7pm at the Panorama in Bathurst. I’ll be playing ABBA through to ZZ Top and next to nothing in between. Come down for a brew or 15.
06.01.2022 This is Plush by STP. Really underrated band and like seemingly every other grunge product from that era, robbed of a frontman before his time, except naturally my least favourite of them in Pearl Jam who all seem immune to death. Anyway it’s a bit rusty but seems to sound ok with the headphones on
05.01.2022 Now hear this trendsetters
05.01.2022 Getting in early - I’ll be playing at the best little bar in Bathurst on Friday at Webb and Co. I can tell you having sampled virtually every beverage they sell on Saturday that they make a good drink. Can’t vouch for the quality of the entertainment but the drinks are good. Come and say gday. Peter Greening looks pretty excited about it I must say.
04.01.2022 Just kicking around a bit with a song I love but haven’t really given a go before. Beast of Burden by the Rolling Stones. It’s a bit all over the place and replete with rubbish lead breaks but it’s as good as I could do
04.01.2022 This is an incredibly underrated song - from the grand Australian Paul Kelly style tradition of simply writing a story exactly as it’s happened rather than metaphor and analogy. I had to change the words a little but because both my actual sons were being roadies for me last night so I wanted to include both of them. Typically I sound like I’m singing through a scuba mask but hopefully you enjoy.
03.01.2022 Going to try and post some half decent videos here again in the coming weeks. This is average but I’ve wanted to try and record it for a while. This is a beautifully sad song by Tim Rogers and at various stages over the past few years I’ve felt every line of it. Particularly ‘I’m loving cigarettes again’ and ‘I piss off my friends/I’m digging a hole just staring at the floor.’ There’s something comforting in the fact. that every level of depression or self pity - someone has been there before.
02.01.2022 In the absence of any gigging at the moment because some bell-end decided bat tastes better than fried rice, this is my only musical outlet at the moment so be prepared for bombardment. Not sure if I’ve uploaded a version of this before but too bad if I have. Best rock song of the 90s... Everlong
02.01.2022 Come and hear me not play this because I’m too useless to sing and play at the same time, at the Ophir in Orang from 6.30
