22.01.2022 I was down at Cape Cleveland tonight shooting some astro and nek minit I got a notification that the ISS was passing overhead in a few minutes. It was a bright pass too so I madly rushed around and setup behind my car. 17.01.2022 **Orion Nebula** Before the wet season set in I was spending a bit of time using my telescope targeting deep space objects, mainly around the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction but also looking at other things in our night sky. This sequence was shot when out at Mingela where the skies are a bit darker away from the city light pollution. It comprises 20x 30sec exposures at ISO1600 and also 10x dark frames for noise reduction all captured with a Canon 6D Mk2 full frame camera. I used... Deepskystacker to blend the light and dark frames then it was edited in Adobe Photoshop. This type of photography is a whole new ballgame and is next level to get anything decent. I'm pretty happy with this and looking forward to good conditions again where I can look at other targets. 09.01.2022 Last night one of the best night sky events of our time occurred with the great conjunction of the two biggest "Gas Giant" planets, Jupiter and Saturn. At just 1/10th of a degree apart, this hasn't happened for over 400 years and over 800 years at night. Whilst they seemed close, in reality they are still hundreds of millions of kms apart. I wanted to capture this with my telescope but had some issues which prevented me from doing that so this shot is a single shot captured ...with the #canonaustralia EOS R5 and an EF100-400mm lens. I ventured out to the small town of Mingela just west of Townsville to get away from the coastal cloud. 09.01.2022 So the results came out yesterday for the annual Epson International Pano Awards. Overall I received two Silver awards which I have posted here. Both are drone shots from the flats at Cape Cleveland. I also received 6x Bronze awards which I pretty much rate as achieving professional standard. The standard of images every year is super high in this competition and the judging is becoming more critical and you have to have a high quality unique image to place highly. Given thi...s I am stoked for my two Silver awards. This also drives me to ramp up the standard of my photography not just for landscape but for all my work and also to improve the delivery of my landscape photography workshops. Next year I am going to shoot specific projects for this comp and see how that goes. 05.01.2022 A couple of shots of Comet Neowise taken from Saunders Beach on Sun evening. First is a blend of two shots to show a couple of meteors captured during shooting. The second is a stack of about 100 light frames and 20 dark frames to reduce noise. Dark sky would have been ideal as the crescent moon nearby made it hard to capture the best quality images. Still happy with the result though. 03.01.2022 I came back from Charters Towers this morning via Hervey Range. Out near Star River I went past a roadkill with a Wedge Tailed Eagle sitting on it having a feed. He stayed there so I turned around but wasnt hopeful of getting anything as they are such flighty birds. As I approached the one on the kill flew off but there were two others there also in the trees. This one was pretty close and he kindly gave me some time to get a few shots. 02.01.2022 My camera tech got a huge boost today with the acquisition of the amazing new EOS R5 from @canonaustralia Coming from the workhorse 5D series this camera is a fantastic update and has very similiar menus and the usual Canon functions but with amazing new tech like advanced autofocus and face and animal detection and all in a small compact frame. Add things like a 45mp sensor, high speed frame rate and focus stacking and you have a camera with cutting edge technology plus the... usual Canon reliability. I'm excited for whats to come!
