12.01.2022 Wheelchairs, prams and those unsteady on their feet: All welcome on Sunshine Coast Beaches Accessible matting, which makes it easier for people with disabi...lities, parents with prams and seniors to navigate to the firm sand, is now being provided at Kings, Coolum and Mooloolaba beaches, as a result of a Council initiative to improve beach accessibility for people of all abilities. Beach wheelchairs and life jackets will also be available at all locations. This follows the successful roll out of accessible matting and the introduction of a beach wheelchair at Alexandra Headland in April 2017. The matting and wheelchairs will be available during patrolled hours on weekends from September through until May and will be managed by volunteer lifeguards from the Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club, Coolum Surf Club, Alex Surf Club. and The Surf Club Mooloolaba. The accessible matting will provide Sunshine Coast Access Advisory Network (SCAAN) member and Mooloolaba resident Jo Ellsum with the opportunity to go to the beach alone. Mrs Ellsum lives just 100 metres from the beach and spending time near or in the water swimming, kayaking or canoeing is her favourite thing to do. Because I am in a wheelchair, my difficulty is getting across the sand into the water, Mrs Ellsum said. At the moment, my husband carries me from the wheelchair across the sand and into the ocean. Its a step in the right direction, Mrs Ellsum said. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the project improves access to our beaches for a wider cross-section of the community. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy our world-class beaches and with an estimated 20 per cent of Australian adults experiencing a disability or long-term health condition, initiatives like this are essential to ensure more people of all abilities experience the joy of visiting the beach, Mayor Jamieson said. Council is grateful for the support of the Metropolitan-Caloundra SLSC, Coolum Beach SLSC, Alexandra Headland SLSC and Mooloolaba SLSCs with the delivery of this initiative. Every weekend their committed volunteer surf lifesavers will roll out the accessible matting and manage community bookings for the wheelchairs and lifejackets. Council has allocated $50,000 towards this project, which includes ongoing maintenance of the accessible matting and wheelchairs and modifications to existing ramps at all four beaches.

11.01.2022 NDIS Improvements Announcements 28/08/2020 Announcements today by Minister Robert flag changes associated with moving the NDIS from implementation to a full-scheme operating environment. They will help deliver improvements requested by many participants, families and carers, and providers. The Participant Service Charter, a key element of the Tune Review, establishes five principles for how the Agency will engage with participants:... Transparent Responsive Respectful Empowering Connected It establishes timeframes for processes, such as the period in which the Agency must make decisions about access, plan approvals, plan reviews and nominee changes. While the Charter requires legislative changes, it is being implemented immediately, with the Agency beginning reporting on its performance against these timeframes immediately. Alongside these announcements, is the Participant Service Improvement Plan, which outlines changes the Agency will be making over the next two years to better meet participants expectations. Reports on progress in the implementation of this Plan will also be included in Quarterly Reports. One of the more substantial changes will be the introduction of independent assessments, which were piloted in NSW some time ago. Independent assessments, paid for by the Agency, will have two primary functions: to give consistency to access decisions; and to help determine the amount of funding in a participants plan. Little detail is provided but NDS understands this will be implemented early in the new year, beginning with assessments for those seeking to access the scheme, before being used more widely. NDS will provide more information as soon as we can. Participants will receive plan summary statements and draft plans prior to them being finalised. Plans will be longer and ongoing, being reviewed on request. Clearer expectations about the role of support coordinators will be articulated and payment processes will be streamlined. The Improvement Plan indicates the Agency will work with remote communities and other areas lacking services to trial new ways of organising services so that participants can use their support finding. Applications for all supports associated with housing and accommodation for an individual will be processed together so as to speed the process. Amendments to the legislation are required in order to implement some of the changes; this is expected to be introduced to Parliament early next year. Despite the absence of detail, it is clear that the impact of many of these changes will be substantial. NDS will keep you informed as more information is released
