25.01.2022 Not only do we offer tuition in primary and high school maths, we have an expert tutor who can assist those needing support with the pre-tertiary subject 'Maths Methods'.

23.01.2022 The dyslexic brain processes text differently, as seen by these MRI scans. In fact, for the person with dyslexia, much of the brain activity occurs in the right hemisphere, the less efficient side for processing text. For the non-dyslexic person, most of the action happens in the left hemisphere where the language processing centres of the brain are located. This part of the brain enables symbolic representation, such as letters, to be decoded and encoded more efficiently. T...hat said, dyslexia offers many advantages particularly in the visual-spatial realm where space is conceived more intuitively (think of the mechanic who can fix a complicated piece of equipment), and in problem-solving where they can see connections between unrelated objects and ideas (think of the creative entrepreneurs). To anyone with an interest in dyslexia read The Dyslexic Advantage Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain by Eide and Eide. See more

21.01.2022 Its never too old to go back to school.

21.01.2022 Breakthrough Book 3

19.01.2022 Computer spellcheckers are not helpful unless the student has already achieved a range of basic spelling skills, at about a Grade 5 level.

18.01.2022 We are resuming tuition online on Monday 27 April. Looking forward to catching up with our students.

17.01.2022 I think it could be time for children to go back to school!

15.01.2022 When choosing to read non-fiction texts to young children, research shows that they prefer to know the whys rather than the whats of a topic. For example, Why does the insect have spots? rather than What spots does the insect have?. This article also has useful information about developing critical thinking skills in our little ones.

15.01.2022 To function with any degree of confidence in our text-focused culture, a person needs to be functionally literate, that is, to read and understand text at approximately an eleven-year-old level. For the individual with dyslexia to achieve this goal can seem insurmountable, but its not. Research has shown that with regular, systematic one-to-one instruction in phonics delivered by teachers with training in specific methodologies, young people with dyslexia can make significant improvements in their ability to sound out words for reading and spelling. It must be remembered, however, these children will need to work harder than their peers without dyslexia.

14.01.2022 I recently watched the most fabulous youtube video about ADHD presented by Dr Russell Barkely, a US clinical psychologist as well as a clinical professor of psychiatry. The video The 30 Essential Ideas Every Parent Needs to Know runs for about 3 hours. Long, I know, but the insights he presents into this condition will have you riveted to your screen and will probably challenge you because he does not sugar coat this condition. So if you appreciate an erudite speaker with razor-sharp intelligence, with a deep understanding of neurology and extensive clinical experience, I urge you to watch this video.

11.01.2022 Available from tomorrow is a free game from Breakthrough to Success with Sounds and Symbols Book 2. The game will help your child to learn to recognise vowel teams that make one sound such as ea, oa and ai. If you wish to get yourself a copy, please visit our website breakthroughtutorial.com.

10.01.2022 For the time-poor individual.

10.01.2022 We, at Breakthrough Tutorial Services, will be reopening our premises on Monday 25 May. Yeah! We are very much looking forward to returning to face-to-face tuition as we know its the most effective way to learn for our students. However, some students and tutors will continue with online tuition because it suits their particular needs for the foreseeable future.

08.01.2022 Most of our wonderful students will be returning to face-to-face tuition today. To those that are still receiving tuition via Zoom, we look forward to seeing you when circumstances allow. Best wishes from the Breakthrough Team

07.01.2022 Breakthrough Tutorial Services resumes tutoring tomorrow at our new premise. We are very much looking forward to working with our returning students, and we warmly welcome our new students.

07.01.2022 Another amusing picture from Liz Dunoon from Get into Neurodiversity.

07.01.2022 The Twin Wendys. Marvellous combination.

06.01.2022 We have tutors that can assist young people with dyscalculia (maths equivalent of dyslexia). Signs that a student may have dyscalculia include: * Difficulty with understanding how numbers relate to each other, .e.g. 4+1 = 5, 3+2=5 * Cannot remember number facts easily, including times tables. * Has difficulty remembering procedures such as long multiplication.... * Cant read the analogue clock with ease. * Difficulty recognising if a numeric answer is reasonable. As dyscalculia impedes academic achievement, daily living and employment prospects, its important that these young people receive skilled assistance to build their capacities.

06.01.2022 Clever kid but did s/he get away with it, I wonder? Did the student have to write out the lines again in the usual manner? Thanks once again to Liz Dunoon from Getting into Neurodiversity for sourcing this amusing picture.

06.01.2022 English spelling is more regular than people think. According to Louisa Cook Moats, nearly 50% of English words are predictable based on sound-letter correspondence alone (e.g. slap, quench, boy). An additional 37% of the more common words are almost predictable except for one letter (e.g. Knit, boAt). Other information, such as the language from which the word came (e.g. Old English, Latin, Greek or French) and word meaning, also helps explain the spelling of words. Only 4% of English words are truly irregular (e.g. laugh, yacht). Our specialised literacy tutors can help your young person navigate the complexities of our coding system. Contact us on either 03 6231 6221 or visit our website, breakthroughtutorial.com to find out how we can help.

04.01.2022 What causes spelling problems? According to L. C. Moats, poor spellers have trouble remembering the letters in words because they have trouble noticing, remembering, and recalling features of language that those letters represent. Spelling inability is influenced by inherited traits, but poor spellers can be helped with good systemic instruction of phonics.

03.01.2022 Judy and Evelyn, two of our experienced tutors, are available to assist your young person with their primary or high school maths. Judy is a qualified maths and science teacher whose focus is to encourage and support her students to achieve positive outcomes. Evelyn, who is a Maths Major, believes in providing sensitive learning support and celebrating achievements.
