25.01.2022 Who's training who?
22.01.2022 After a marathon cleaning day I'm going to share what I've found to be the best flooring, bedding and cleaning systems I've found for dog maids (that's what I feel like anyway). Flooring - anything you can mop, lino, timber etc. Carpet = yuck. Then mats and carpet tiles to keep things cosy. Any mat or rug that can fit in the washing machine is a bonus. To clean the carpet tiles and mats, I use a mix of washing powder, Vanish and a big splash of eucalyptus (Bosistos).... Wet the tile/mat down with the hose, then brush on the wash mix. I just use a soft/medium house broom. I leave it on to soak while I start the next tile. Hose it off, then brush the mix on again. Let it sit again then hose off. Best if you can do the last hose off while its hanging up. I wash them on the back verandah as it cleans and freshens that area as well. Any left over wash mix gets spread on the verandah and brushed and hosed. All the bedding goes in the washing machine with a splash of eucalyptus in the rinse thingy in the machine. Spot cleaning on furniture or carpet is pretty much the same but I have a spray can of eucalyptus handy for timber and material furniture legs. (Boys will be boys). Bicarb soda on spot stains will soak up moisture (wee) and pull it out of the carpet or rug. Also good for drawing moisture from gaps in the floating floor. Even house-trained puppers have naughty moments (read peeing inside) because it's raining or cold or dark or they're just being lazy. If any one has any other good cleaning ideas let me know in the comments. See more
22.01.2022 Ermagahd! I have one at the moment and forget how much hard work they are.
19.01.2022 It's International Dog Day. Hooray for all the puppers. Post a pic of your dog in the comments to celebrate. Here's a few of mine to brighten up hump day.
14.01.2022 Several people have contacted me re puppy play dates and I'm thinking of holding a couple of get together for puppies. I'll include a bit of basic training too. Looking at puppies under 6 mths old. Anyone interested?
13.01.2022 Happy Christmas and a safe New Year to all the puppers and their people. Don't forget to keep our 4 legged kids away from the Christmas treats (salted meats incl ham, choc, poinsettia, ribbons, cooked bones). No one wants to spend their Christmas dough at the vet. Keep em locked up tight on NYE too. Give them all a special hug (ok, people too) and we'll see you in the New Year. Sorry no dress up pics cause they're (I'm) hopeless.
01.01.2022 Warning...rant time. A friend of mine is looking for a rescue dog and not having much luck so I decided to do a bit of hunting on the rescue sites. Seems like about 80% of dogs looking for homes are staffy, bull arab types or are working dogs, kelpies and heelers. Those cute rolly polly puppies grow up to be big, bouncy, strong, active dogs. Staffy types are stubborn, working dogs want to work and run. When they become too active or too big or act in a way that is normal for ...them, they end up on rescue sites. I know I'm generalising but if you are going to get a dog be very aware of the breed's general traits. So many dogs make great human companions but aren't too keen on other dogs. Some dogs are great for joining you on your activities but once a week is not enough. Please, when getting a dog consider your entire lifestyle and the traits of the breed. Early and constant training will help curb many unwanted traits but instinct is a powerful thing. Make sure you have the time to put into your new dog. Remember the puppy will change with age, in size and demeanour, and your lifestyle may change too. Dogs live an average of 10 to 15 yrs and in all that time your dog needs your attention and care. Don't let your dog end up in a rescue because you didn't take the time to research or train. Rescue organisations are fabulous but a home is the best place. See more
