25.01.2022 The Hooded Plover breeding season has officially begun on Phillip Island, which means beach checks and refuge installations are in full swing! These refuge structures may look simple but are part of a very effective and targeted state-wide strategy that has been refined over more than 20 years. Along with local community support, they have played a huge part in reversing the trend of declining Hooded Plover numbers. Before refuges were introduced, an average of only two chick...s fledged per year on Phillip Island that number has now lifted to 12 fledglings per year Learn more about beach-nesting birds https://bit.ly/3oeNpJQ BirdLife Australia photo of chick by Glen Ehmke

24.01.2022 Phillip Island’s globetrotting short-tailed shearwaters have officially touched down, after flying over 12,000km from feeding grounds in waters around Alaska. It seems last year’s late arrival of the birds was not a once-off. This year, they also landed early in October, rather than their long-term standard date September 24. Over the summer months, more than 1.5 million short-tailed shearwaters call Phillip Island home, nesting in sand dune burrows along the coast. Locals an...d visitors can look to the skies just after sunset to witness the spectacular sight and sounds of them flying in after a fishing trip. Listen to the arrival of short-tailed shearwaters bit.ly/34rbZhs Nature Parks Deputy Research Director Dr Duncan Sutherland and his team will head out next week to monitor several study sites to gain a picture of the birds’ overall condition after their long-haul flight. #phillipislandnp Photo by Nature Parks Education Ranger Graeme Burgan.

23.01.2022 Ranger Jordan to the rescue! We're very grateful to have captured this moment on our livestream cameras, as it serves as a great reminder for us all to play our part in caring for wildlife and the environment Shout-out to rangers Meagan & Michael for spotting this little one and radioing Jordan to make sure she had seen it too. #phillipislandnp

20.01.2022 Hello there just letting you know we’ll be starting tonight’s livestream a little earlier at 8.15pm as we have some special visitors to the Penguin Parade we’d like you to meet... See you then!

20.01.2022 Yes, I said we will eat breakfast soon! Who can relate to this mother swan and her four cygnets? If you haven’t visited Swan Lake, we highly recommend stopping in on your next trip to the Penguin Parade.... @meagantucker

20.01.2022 Are you getting out into nature this weekend? Whether you're looking for a coastal hike, bushland stroll, wetland wander or just want to soak in some tranquil views, our reserves offer it all. bit.ly/2AtOWqY

19.01.2022 Do you have plans for tomorrow night? If so, you're going to want to cancel them (or at least have a device on hand to listen in), because this is one virtual party you don't want to miss! Kicking off at 7:40pm AEDT, Nature Parks Data Analyst Ross Holmberg will join Ranger Skye and Ranger T for an almighty episode of Live Penguin TV then at 8:30pm, we'll cross to Remember The Wild for live music sets by Felix Riebl from The Cat Empire + Alice Skye + The Orbweavers If you have any questions about how we use technology to track, monitor and protect Little Penguins and other wildlife, tomorrow night (Saturday 10th) will be your chance to ask them!

18.01.2022 Penguin homes under construction This revegetation project began the moment our old penguin parade visitor centre was removed! Our staff set to work placing nesting boxes down and planting hundreds of native trees and ground covers around. The mix of lush native vegetation and sheltered nesting boxes provides the perfect habitat for Little Penguins on land. If you visit our penguin parade over the next 6-12 months, you will notice this area becoming progressively greener.

18.01.2022 We would love to hear from you! What do you know about Phillip Island Nature Parks? What would you like to hear more about? This short survey will help us create greater experiences for you Complete the survey https://surveymonkey.com/r/KLLZW6Z

16.01.2022 We are very proud to have just been awarded winner of the Distinction in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation category in the Victorian Marine and Coastal Awards. Our Seals as Ecosystem Sentinels project aims to understand changes in the marine ecosystem that impact seals. Citizen scientists are using drones to monitor seal colonies, collecting data on population numbers and ecosystem changes. This innovative approach reduces the human impact on the seal colony and enabl...es managers to quickly detect and respond to changes. 16.01.2022 Happy World Migratory Bird Day! Phillip Island is a place of national significance for several migratory bird species. Bar-tailed godwits fly from their breeding grounds in Alaska to return to Australia, in a non-stop flight of 11,000km in 8 days. Red knots also breed in the northern hemisphere and come to Australia for the non-breeding part of their year. The red-necked stint weighs in at less than 30g but flies to Siberia for breeding each year.... The Latham's snipe is found in our wetlands and is being studied both here and in Japan where it breeds. Swamp harriers migrate to Phillip Island each year for breeding. More than 1.5 million short-tailed shearwaters call Phillip Island home each summer, nesting in sand dune burrows along the coast. Plus a whole host of small woodland birds that migrate from parts of Australia here for breeding. Migratory birds connect countries, and their conservation is a global effort. We are committed to maintaining Phillip Island as a biodiversity hotspot, helping to protect these international travellers and other wildlife species. #WMBD2020 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #birdsconnecttheworld BirdLife International BirdLife Australia Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority Threatened Species Commissioner Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

15.01.2022 That’s right, work it, show us your best koala pouts Thanks to Ranger Skye for capturing these beauties from our Koala Conservation Reserve on camera (left is male Kiewa, right is female Lindsey). If you’d like to pay Kiewa & Lindsey a visit, head to bit.ly/311QMJZ... #lovemynatureparks #phillipislandnp

15.01.2022 This pair of fluffy chicks are in what we call 'stage P3' - when they're almost ready to leave the safety of their parents' burrow and head out to sea on their own (fledge). Our researchers have seen a big drop in the number of chicks inside burrows on the Summerland Peninsula's south coast lately, which is very exciting, as it means most of the chicks have already fledged. The adult penguins aren’t wasting any time either! Already, we're seeing signs that suggest they are gearing up for a second breeding attempt. Stay tuned

15.01.2022 Dear waddle watchers... we experienced unprecedented flooding at the Penguin Parade overnight which caused our livestream camera connection to go down. We've had a team working on it all day but unfortunately, the connection will not be restored in time for tonight's #LivePenguinTV stream. Now we know you'll be disappointed in not being able to see what the cheeky penguins of Phillip Island are up to tonight (we are too), so to make up for it, we thought we'd take a trip do...wn memory lane and replay one of our most popular past streams. Which of these would you like to see again tonight?? Let us know in the comments 1. The very first #1 launch night live 2. The saga of Goose Gate 3. Another stream of your choice? (same time, same place )

15.01.2022 Welcome to Thursday 26th of November Live Penguin TV! Watch from 29 minutes to see Ranger Jordan rescue a penguin who had a mysterious substance caught around its neck. If you'd like to donate to the Penguin Foundation, please visit bit.ly/penguindonate

13.01.2022 Enjoy the next hour of music from Felix from The Cat Empire, Alice Skye & The Orbweavers (start video from 59:00 if you're watching this back)

13.01.2022 We just love the colours of this scenic peninsula on a sunny day Can you believe there was once a housing estate here? The Summerland Estate buy-back is an incredible conservation success story. It's thanks to a few very important decisions made in the 1980s that we have a thriving colony of Little Penguins here on Phillip Island today. If you don't know the story, you can read it here: nyti.ms/390vj8y or on our website: bit.ly/3bZiPzR... #phillipislandnp

12.01.2022 Welcome to our 3rd cohosted Japanese x English episode of Live Penguin TV! If you'd like to donate to the Penguin Foundation, please visit bit.ly/penguindonate

12.01.2022 Lady, a very important member of our conservation team, will retire from her role as a senior fox detection dog at the end of this week. Over the last 10 years, Lady has played a huge part in the success of fox eradication projects, namely the Tasmanian and Phillip Island Fox Eradication Programs. She has travelled over 18,000km whilst searching for foxes in these programs! Lady will be greatly missed by the team but she will not be going far and certainly deserves the relaxing retirement she will have on Phillip Island.

11.01.2022 Welcome to our special Saturday 10th October Live Penguin TV! In tonight's stream, Skye & T will be joined by Data Analyst Ross Holmberg for a live Q&A on all things penguins! P.s Happy World Animal Day! ... #livepenguintv #worldanimalday

10.01.2022 There's something quite magical about waiting for the penguins to arrive each evening... After the first raft (group of penguins) is sighted out at sea, the excitement from the grandstands builds as the dark blue patch moves closer to shore. The audience is captivated as a series of white bellies emerge, shaking the water from their feathers and beginning their waddle across the sand. Our ranger team gets to enjoy this over and over again and it never gets old, but nothing beats seeing new guests experience it for the first time. Come see for yourself bit.ly/310vpbM

10.01.2022 Every day we live, work, and learn on Country that First Nations people have cared for over thousands of years. The Traditional Custodians of Millowl (Phillip Island) are the Bunurong, and we pay our respects to them and thank them for looking after the beautiful natural environment around us, today and every day. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

09.01.2022 Front row availability, lots of space to move, lovely summer weather and huge waddles of penguins coming ashore - there’s never been a better time to enjoy viewing from our Penguin Plus stand. Tickets are now available until the end of January on our website bit.ly/np-tickets #penguinparade #phillipislandnp

07.01.2022 Well, folks, you asked so you shall receive... The saga of Goose Gate from Friday 18th September is back for another night of suspense! Feel free to comment your questions and we'll still get back to you in the feed as per usual, however, our lovely hosts will be not answering any from tonight live on air since this is a recording. For those who missed our last post, unfortunately, our livestream cameras are currently down due to wild Phillip Island weather. We hope to have them back up and running by tomorrow night but will keep you updated. Oh... and 1425 penguins crossed the beach last night

07.01.2022 A great view of Phillip Island’s rugged, wild & beautiful south coast, including the Nobbies and the Summerland Peninsula (with our Nobbies Centre hiding in the midst there). Learn how your tickets help fund the conservation of this area and many others at penguins.org.au/conservation Taken by Jake Marinov on a trip in Phillip Island Helicopters

07.01.2022 Our team of beach-nesting birdwatchers have been keeping a careful eye on the migratory shorebirds landing on, and local birds nesting on Phillip Island's beaches this season. What's your favourite location to enjoy a bit of birdwatching? Beaches? Bushlands? ... Wetlands? We are lucky on Phillip Island to have the option of all three, each within 10 minutes drive of one another! See more

07.01.2022 Tonight we're rewatching the very first night of Live Penguin TV from Tuesday 25th August Let us know in the comments if you notice any changes in the penguin numbers or behaviours from this stream 63 days ago to the last few streams we've done! 2950 penguins came ashore last night

04.01.2022 Caption this photo! An Eastern Barred Bandicoot is caught on camera sneaking past a sleeping Little Penguin in the Summerland Peninsula at one minute to midnight... What do you think is going on here? #justwildlifethings

04.01.2022 And they're off again! The travelling Short-tailed Shearwaters have left their freshly renovated burrows on Phillip Island and headed out to sea for their two week 'honeymoon' period. They will venture as far as the waters around Antarctica to feed up on the tastiest fish, in preparation for egg laying and incubation when they return. Safe flight friends, see you soon

04.01.2022 Can you spot the black-fronted dotterel chick amongst the sticks in the first photo? This little one hatched earlier this week from a nest just outside our penguin parade entrance. Its camouflage against the bark is the perfect example of why we should always take caution in wildlife habitat areas and stick to the pathways to avoid hurting or scaring tiny birds like this one (the other two photos are of its parents)... Photos taken by Ranger Shani #phillipislandnp

04.01.2022 Mmm juicy eucalyptus leaves... Koalas spend 1-3 hours every day feeding, consuming between 200-500 grams of leaves over a 24 hour period. We tend to see more movement amongst the treetops at our Koala Conservation Reserve in the afternoons, with the koalas on the search for the freshest leaves to feed on. Visit us this weekend to find out for yourself bit.ly/2ANvnKv

04.01.2022 We are deeply committed to both recognition of our true history and reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community, but we acknowledge there is still much work to be done. For a better understanding of the significance of January 26, our best option is to listen to the explicit views of Aboriginal Victorians. The Co-Chairs of the First People’s Assembly of Victoria, Geraldine Atkinson and Marcus Stewart have published this overview of the Assembly's position on this significant and contested date. Visit the Assembly website and read the full statement here: bit.ly/3a0kBhJ

04.01.2022 We are very excited to announce that we're partnering with our friends at Remember The Wild to bring you an extra special live event on Saturday 10th October. It'll be two hours of fun, all streamed live on Facebook, and will run a little something like this: - Our usual Saturday night shenanigans with Phillip Island's Little Penguins - A live Q&A with Nature Parks Data Analyst Ross Holmberg ... - Live music from Felix Riebl of The Cat Empire, Alice Skye and The Orbweavers More information facebook.com/events/346041096510337

03.01.2022 Spring is an exciting time on Phillip Island, with a lot of wildlife in their breeding season, huge swells changing the coastline almost daily, and migratory birds reaching our shores. Read our latest nature update for a quick look at what you might see if you visit Phillip Island during spring bit.ly/30CiKLZ

03.01.2022 Just a friendly reminder to please dispose of your masks correctly so they do not end up in wildlife habitat. Luckily, Ranger Meagan found these few before the penguins did. Cutting the straps of your disposable masks will also help prevent animals from becoming entangled, if they happen to blow out of the bin you place them in. Of course, getting yourself a reusable mask is the best option when it comes to limiting waste.

02.01.2022 Exciting burrow camera update! A pair of Little Penguins have officially moved into the nesting box with our live camera feed attached, and they are already minding two eggs. If you've been watching our nightly livestreams and wondering what the penguins get up to once they enter their burrows, now's your chance to find out.
