30.01.2022 8 years training people. . 5 years combined study. . I gave the best advice given all my experience and evidence.... . He was better and yet dad saw no value . Such is the consequence of 'do moreism' rife in our industry. . #fitness #health #physio #exercise #coach See more

25.01.2022 I remind my lifters consistently to have a sense of humour with their training. Take it seriously, but also see the funny side whenever you can. . It's okay to have a laugh when you miss a lift. In fact, I encourage it if you absolutely shonk a lift. Without going into the psych of it too much, having a laugh puts you in a better mood. A better mood to try again. . My client here told me 'to record it,' in a very confident way. So I did. He shanked it. But no biggie, we had a... laugh (more so me) and we moved on. . No dwelling. Just some technical feedback and we are ready to go again. . #funny #fail #weightlifting #coach #virtual #trainingn #laugh See more

25.01.2022 After learning the high pull, the next stage is to learn how to get overhead!

24.01.2022 As a person with a bias on anatomy I look at movement of the knee joint, which is acted on by the quads. More on that next week. #Repost @lesterhokw (@get_repost) THE ROLE OF THE QUADS.... We know that it is critical In the lifts to use your legs. But what does that really mean in terms of biomechanics? When we look at joint actions and the direction of the joint movement, our goal is to balance out the joint forces and eventually create a more vertical direction of movement. If we look at the prime movements of the legs, we know that the hips alone will provide a force moving forward as like in a kettlebell swing. But if that is applied to lifting a barbell, we eventually get a more horizontal displacement bar trajectory which will mean a bigger loop and more difficulty in fixating the weight overhead. So to balance this up, the quads are generally involved as knee extension is a force driving posteriorly. This then balances out the trajectory of the bar to be within the base of support and eventually more vertical (not completely vertical still) and subsequently less looping in the turnover. And in plain English, it basically means that the hips still develop the power and the quads provide the direction. So the next time you are thinking of using the legs, don’t forget that your quads are also part of creating leg extension and you will find a very surprising boost of velocity on the barbell. More on this along with how momentum then comes in play in my next seminar collaborating with @phillip.liao on the 10th/11th of October. 22.01.2022 Session focuses: 1. V Step 2. JJC entry 3. Stay in the pocket .... Under the guidance of coach @iam_markbui. . 19.01.2022 When I first started kickboxing, I had a hard time shadow boxing. I felt silly. Uncoordinated. . @iam_markbui told me that as time went on, I would see its' utility. And he was absolutely right. Especially when it comes to sparring, it takes intense concentration to visualise someone moving a certain way, and then moving your body in response. . But, it also provides a way of bringing my visualisations to life. Prior to this sequence I was thinking about my switch kick and ho...w to make it 'pop off the floor' better. I hypothesised that if I stayed on my toes during the switch, I could bounce off the floor easier. So I thought, 'why not try it? . And that was that. 18.01.2022 [F E E T P O S I T I O N] . One of the dogmatic ideas behind feet position is that there is something that is uniformly ideal across the entire human population. In the case of weightlifting, this manifests itself as an obsession with feet angle, its' relation to the shoulders and it's relation to the pelvis. It's almost as dogmatic as the 'no knees over toes' thing, but that's a different story. . Barring any severe mobility limitatiions, the human body is quite an intellig...ient design with its' ability to self-organise. You do not need to think about feet angle when you walk, nor do you think about 'knees' out when you sit down on a chair. . For those who struggle with squatting, before you go about bashing your ankles, hips and thoracic spine with 'corrective exercises,' ask yourself whether you're actually in a position that suits YOU. This means you HAVE to play and experiment. Feet turned out more? Turned in more? A bit wider? A bit less, perhaps. What you're trying to figure out isn't as simple as 'what is the best foot position for the squat?' The problem you're solving is 'what is the best foot position for MY overhead squat?' . Any 'one' way to do something will WORK for some. But it won't for many others. As coaches and enthusiasts, we must be willing to learn and adapt to the cases in front of us. . In the borrowed words of Bruce Lee: 'Use no way as way. When there is a way, there in lies the limitation.' More concepts to be shared at my upcoming virtual seminar with @lesterhokw where we will be providing TWO perspectives on weightlifing - one of an anatomist and biomechanist. . 2 pre-sale tickets left! . #weightlifting #crossfit #crossfitgirls #crossfitcommunity #sydney #melbourne #virtual #virtuallearning #coach #strength #strengthtraining #olympicweightlifting See more

17.01.2022 4 years ago I wrote down on a sheet of paper all the physical challenges I wanted to complete before I died (morbid, I know). There were three things I listed: . 1. Do everything in my power to reach the Commonwealth Games 2. Run a marathon 3. I'm pretty sure you know what it is, so I'm not going to name it here... . At the time of this list, I was curious to know the physical challenge it would bring, but after achieving the first, I realised that the true gem of this list was the mental struggle it would entail. . Both journeys, from start to finish were abundant in setbacks. With weightlifting, every botched training session, every underperformed competition, every injury and niggle would need a shift in mindset in order to persevere. . It was much the same with the marathon - the aches and niggles, the gut problems, the breathing problems... were all reasons I could use to quit. . But I knew that these setbacks, and my reactions to them, were the reason I needed to keep going. I viewed each setback I overcame as another victory for the part of my mind that strived for excellence and resilience, over that which longed for comfort and rest. That was the true treasure of these physical undertakings. . The 42km run was an almost 5 hour mental arm wrestle between two sides of me. The side I wanted to win, won. And although not the time I wanted, that made it all worth it. . #running #weightlifting #mental See more

17.01.2022 Nationals - 2017. The story - I did something stupid. . I competed at this #competition in U62kg weight class. One week before I was 67kg. . First off, I was being irresponsible with my food intake (I had a particular fancy for burgers at the time), which was the primary reason for my weight gain.... . Secondly, I wanted to see how far I could stretch my weight out... and still make it. Fun, I know. . From the carb cutting, starving, water cutting, dehydration... I learnt something crucial. I can make it . . But look, I cramped and performed like shit on the day so I dont recommend it at all. Never could I have guessed that 6 months later Id be doing an even larger cut. . In hindsight it was a stupid idea but I gained valuable experience for the mental side of things. . #weightlifting #sauna #strength #coach #personaltrainer See more

17.01.2022 I know technology can be cited as a reason for increasing sedentary behaviour - computers, phones, tablets can capture attention and hold you there for a number of hours. . But technology as we all know are a tool. How we use it is up to us. Allow me to use myself as an example for technology promoting physical activity. . Since buying my @garmin fenix 5... I have been deriving enjoyment from checking my statistics.... . I feel a sense of satisfaction seeing my average step count reach 10000, in fact, i make sure i accumulate 10000 steps now specifically because i can see it on my watch face. . I love seeing my RHR in the 50s because I know it signifies aerobic adaptation and healthy ventricular adaptation. I think id buy a cake (brownies, in case youre wondering) for myself if I ever get into the 40s. . I cant wait to check what zone and pace Ive completed my runs in because I see it as a sure sign of improvement. As my distances increase, Ill be able to tabulate my progress and that seriously excites me. . Growing up I was a gamer at heart, and with the watch I feel like Im gaining experience points with everything I do. It adds an element of fun to my training and at the moment, its facilitating AND enhancing my physical activity. . #garmin #run #gamer #steps See more

17.01.2022 Newbie @almak_9999 learning the no feet power jerk in preparation for the split jerk this week. . From a kinaesthetic perspective, I like teaching this movement before the split jerk for a few reasons. . 1. Feel for balance in the dip... 2. Feel for direction change after drive 3. Feel for the appropriate use of arms . But, from a complexity perspective, I like limiting feet movement because it is one less thing to think about. Less to think about means more attention can be diverted to other details. . #coaching #jerk #crossfit #olympicweightlifting #weightlifting #coach #personaltrainers #education See more

16.01.2022 Another aspect of the reasons we coach. . Movement has the ability to break all barriers and help us connect. This is not limited just to weightlifting. . Think soccer - a universal game that universally bonds.... . To add to our community is a way of giving back. . #Repost @lesterhokw (@get_repost) Apart from spreading the knowledge, there is also another reason why I enjoy coaching. When we first get into the sport, we are welcomed into a community built to support each other. This was what I experienced as a lifter. And the natural progression is to build something so that I can pass it forward and everyone else has an opportunity to have a similar experience as I did. More importantly, combining that with the education of the individual on their bodies and movements, they also learn to appreciate not only the community aspect of the sport but also each other as individuals through movement. Today was the prime example of this where within our Zoom group, the support for each other came about and the encouragement for a pretty lift was present. This is also why I am so thankful for this TG community as a coach because while we have been apart, these sessions have kept us going together. As a coach, on top of the education, I also enjoy seeing people come together to appreciate the sport and one another. Hence, collaborating with someone like @phillip.liao allows me to pass on what I enjoy about the sport not just from the technical perspective but also the camaraderie experienced from the different individuals you get to learn more about. #weightlifting #weightlifting101 #chineseweightlifting #weightliftingcoach #weightliftinghouse #weightliftinglife #crossfitweightlifting #olympicweightlifting #nikeweightlifting #mastersweightlifting #melbourne #australia #crossfit #crossfitgirls #crossfitter #crossfitgames #crossfitopen #crossfitters #strength #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #strengthcoach #fitness #fitnessmotivation #strengthandconditioningcoach #strong #training #TheTrainingGeek #TGStrength

15.01.2022 The 'mental shotgun.' Learnt from Professor Kahneman. One word will trigger a 'shotgun' effect, where any concept associated with that word will light up in your mind. . For example, if you saw the word '#squat', you might think about #crossfit, #weightlifting, #fitness, #health, #quads, #trainers... to name a few. That is the 'shotgun' effect. . In the context of #health - for long lasting, sustainable #behaviour change, as #coaches we must be aware that client education is ...the roadmap to their success. The pool of concepts available to a person is what we are trying to grow - and the better they understand each and every concept, the better choices they can make. . For example, let's use an imaginary client - Jan. For all intents and purposes, she's a very ordinary person (lol, imaginary pleb). Some average health literacy and underaverage health. . You might mention 'fat' and immediately the shotgun effect for her might be 'bad,' 'cardio,' 'imaginary,' 'genetic,' 'no carb,' 'ketogenic.' This is not inherently bad, but if she tried to lose #fat, she would only be framing her actions from the words above... until new ideas and concepts are slid into her DM's. . What if we were able to introduce her to concepts of reward pathways/loops? Environmental constraints? Abundant energy source? Stress? Menstrual cycle? Essential nutrients? . The more #knowledge our clients have at their disposal, the better choices they CAN make. Make no mistake - this takes time and effort, but what it leads to is the most important part of our role. . #Empowerment. See more

The snatch is not simple. But, I dont believe it is very complex either. With the right individualised methods and breakdowns, learning can be accelerated.... . My teaching method with her has been mainly a combination of visual and auditory feedback. The skill itself was broken down into segments and explanations given where necessary. 08.01.2022 [I N T R I N S I C A N D E X T R I N S I C C U E I N G] . With instrinsic and extrinsic cueing, it's not a question of 'what's better' as much as it is about 'when to use'. As we all know, people are unique. And so every lifter will respond to different things. . As someone who has learnt better off intrinsic cues, I have a natural bias towards this style, contrary to the scientific literature (last I was in university, anyway). In my experience, the use of intrinsic cues ...teaches the lifter to move their body relative to the bar, as opposed to focus on the bar relative to the body. Consequently what you have is a technique based off 'feel' of the body. Because of this, I find that those highly in tune with their movements will 'feel' what is wrong and be able to auto correct. . Furthermore, as someone who has a particular interest in anatomy, being able to feel for tension in certain muscles and joints is crucial to using the right muscle groups to perform the movement. Feeling your midfoot, quads and lower back in the start position... will most likely lead to usage of those areas. . Are there drawbacks? Absolutely. Simply put, some lifters are just not as aware of their bodies. This is where extrinsic cues are great. In reality, in this case you would find a way to utilise the extrinsic cue as a method to explore the intrinsic sensations. Furthermore, just because you feel something in the right areas does not mean the lift is going to be perfect. It still has to adhere to the biomechanical principles of the lift... which is where @lesterhokw can come in to describe how extrinsic cues assist with the biomechanics of the lift. . 07.01.2022 One of the main components we will be covering at the virtual workshop this weekend is the importance of 'feeling' the right areas. . When this is done correctly, lifters are able to understand what they felt corresponding with what is achieved. . Here we have Jay performing a snatch. Ive never taught him to be slow off the floor but it feels right for him. Anytime Ive asked him to speed up even a little it makes him worse. It just 'feels' right to him.... . 07.01.2022 'Now that I've won a slam, I know something very few people on Earth are permitted to know. A win doesn't feel as good as a loss feels bad, and the good feeling doesn't last as long as the bad. Not even close,' - 'Open' by Andre @agassi. . Throughout my journey as a competitive weightlifter I would regularly question myself what 'that' moment would feel like. You know, the moment you see on television screens, where triumph brings someone down to their knees, or tears down th...eir cheeks. . You sacrifice for long periods of time, telling yourself it's quite okay because it was worth something - something at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel itself is dark, and times you stare down to the very end and you see the exit, but it's not light. It's just dark. . I consider myself very fortunate that although dark, I did end up with light. I had a moment of triumph but I emphasise, it was but a moment. The emotional losses and torment you put yourself through lasts much longer in comparison. . Now that I look back on it, I am thankful for the lowest of lows the competitive train took me because my appreciation for that journey is a derivative of the anguish it caused. . There's something satisfying about willingly plunging yourself into a state of darkness and staying there, to the point that you realise it's really not so bad, and in fact, if you learn to bear it, and keep moving within it, something magical happens. . @ohragnar . #weightlifting #competition #tennis #competition #mindset #coach See more

06.01.2022 There's always an element within weightlifting that draws us individuals to the sport of weightlifting. For Lester, it was the application of biomechanics. For me, it has always been the puzzle solving element. . I know I find complex tasks fascinating, even more so if a degree of physicality is involved - and weightlifting is JUST that. #Repost @lesterhokw (@get_repost)... My experience as a lifter actually began from the research/academic side. I was introduced to weightlifting through my lecturer at school who then introduced me further to my coach @robertkabbas. It was in fact through my learnings of research that got me further into becoming a lifter as I was recommended to learn more about the sport as I was conducting research on it. One thing grew from another and the next thing I knew, I was involved in the sport in more than the aspect of research. I grew to love the sport and wanted to grow the same love for the sport in others. To this day, I still use the foundations of my research in my coaching and all of that first started off from this lab. Where I started to bring science together with the art of coaching. There grew the Training Geek and what we have today as TG Strength as we look to bring the little I know of biomechanics to weightlifting. This is why it is so exciting to be able to share what I know in an upcoming collaboration with @phillip.liao as I get to talk about how my journey began and how biomechanics can be applied to movement in weightlifting. #weightlifting #weightlifting101 #chineseweightlifting #weightliftingcoach #weightliftinghouse #weightliftinglife #crossfitweightlifting #olympicweightlifting #nikeweightlifting #mastersweightlifting #melbourne #australia #crossfit #crossfitgirls #crossfitter #crossfitgames #crossfitopen #crossfitters #strength #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #strengthcoach #fitness #fitnessmotivation #strengthandconditioningcoach #strong #training #TheTrainingGeek #TGStrength

06.01.2022 I am fortunate to have access to three paradigms - coach, competitor and physiotherapist. And with it, I believe a unique perspective. . Speaking with my own competitors, treating and competing against or alongside them, I've really come to appreciate how important the mind is when dealing with setback. . I've seen many average people (no Im not trying to offend anyone) set back for weeks if not months after an injury that would not even be given a second thought by some of t...hese competitors I've dealt with. . Serious competitors just have this 'ah, shit happens, just keep pushing' mindset. There's no backing down for these guys. Unless it's fatalistic and actually stops them from functioning at even the most basic level, they'll keep going. . I believe the commonly espoused term in the self-help industry is 'grit' or 'resilience.' I like to describe it as 'discomfort tolerance,' and it seems to be higher in serious competitors. . The next question is so - how do you develop it? The popular opinion would be train it. Slowly. Incrementally. Progressively. And Ive seen this happen many times successfully. The unpopular? Some can. Some cant. Have I seen this? Yes - but then again, it could've been my coaching/therapist skills that didnt empower them to be more resilient. . I've seen 3 year olds who fall down, cry, and stay down until someone comes over to hold them. I've seen 3 year olds who fall down, get up and play even harder. . I'd like to think that we can all develop resilience and Ill never stop trying with anyone I work with. But at some point, the individual needs to make a choice to BE resilient. It starts with you. . #resilience #grit #strength #competition See more

05.01.2022 A fundamental understanding of technique in one sport can be transferred to another. . If you understand the desired outcome and how to utilise the joints to get there, your ability to understand the technique of other movements will be enhanced. . #Repost @lesterhokw (@get_repost)... LOVE FOR BIOMECHANICS My love for biomechanics actually started with my first sport, ten-pin bowling (video from pre-Covid). It is a sport that requires an understanding of not only the equipment but how to move the body for efficiency that is transferred to an external object with an accuracy-based element to it. Like in lifting, the use of momentum is critical to not only have movement accuracy as you are looking to hit a target. In lifting, our movement accuracy happens in the way we interact with the bar. It’s not a matter of muscling the movement as over time, you will reach a limit of what you can achieve till you learn to move momentum along with the body. It’s from my first sport that I got interested in learning what really affects technique which led me to study more about biomechanics as it was about the study of how the human body moves. Come join myself and @phillip.liao for a weekend where we learn to explore the finer details of how different individuals choose to move in their lifts. 04.01.2022 Back when I used to lift (wow... it feels strange saying that), one of my key weaknesses was my receiving position in the clean. As the weight increased, I had a tendency collapse at the thorax. . Anatomically I didnt have the best mid thoracic extension. My hip flexion (especially right) became progressively worse as the years went by and I had okay ankle dorsiflexion. . I believe having the ability to hold an almost vertical spine in the front squat is a HUGE predictor of s...uccess in the clean (and probably weightlifting in general). 03.01.2022 Two very happy Masters lifters. . @elenamacnamara with 6/6, an all time CNJ and comp total PB. Our focus the whole time was to stay in the zone. No unnecessary chatter when comp is on. At all. I think it worked. . @sillisarah coming back from a few months of injuries to absolutely smash an equal CNJ pb. We had to deal with a little bit of snatch anxiety but we got through it by being patient and reinforcing breathing techniques. To all my science homies out there, this was a...rousal regulation at work. . Perhaps something that neither lifter realised was I made a point to myself that under no circumstance would I ask either of them 'how they felt.' It's probably a miniscule thing but lately I dont think it really matters on comp day. You have a job to do and that's pretty much it. . Big thank you to @nswwa for putting on such a smooth comp despite our current conditions. . #snatch #cleanandjerk #competition #weightlifting #power #strength See more

02.01.2022 What is the overhead position? #Repost @lesterhokw (@get_repost) Overhead stability is one of the key components to establishing good positioning in the snatch and even the jerk.... In order to figure out what should be utilised to hold this position, first, the position of the combined centres of mass of the barbell and the lifter needs to be established. As you can see from the arrow, it indicates the equilibrium of the centres and that sits directly over the back of the shoulders or on top of the scaps, falling over the mid foot. With that in mind, we can then go on to establish the muscles involved in stabilising the overhead position. Hence, the balance and stability doesn’t just come from strong shoulders but a strong scapular position. So when establishing a good overhead position, you can’t have that discussion without talking about both. The scaps are where the combined centre of mass sits so in order to support the bar, it needs to be stable. Only when that happens, the shoulders can be in an ideal position to have the arms stacked under the bar. A great example is the banded dislocation (swipe for video) where the common error is to pull through the entire range of the shoulder just to gain more mobility but as you can see as my arms pass that point of retraction of the scaps, the scaps lose some tension. The correction I would make is to pause the movement just at the point of maximum tension in retraction to teach the correct feeling of support and if you observe, that angle of the arm sits similar to that when I am at the bottom of the lift. So bottom line is, when trying to achieve overhead stability, a strong understanding of this positioning needs to come first. Then you can decide what muscles are necessary to provide the best support according to your levers. And more importantly, which one you are overloading constantly that is always causing you that shoulder niggle. P.S. this is one of the things I regularly correct first when someone comes to TG Strength. And, it’s also going to be one of the hot topics coming up in a collaborative seminar with @phillip.liao bringing together some ideas on anatomy and biomechanics.

02.01.2022 Top - roughly 6 weeks ago. Shorter distance, slower time, higher heart rate. . Bottom - today. Longer distance, faster time, lower heart rate. . A repetitive thought in my mind is just how quickly the human body adapts. I mean, I knew it was amazing but seriously - every week, each run feels better. If my lungs arent improving, then my legs feel lighter, if its not my legs, it's my stride.... . @coach.ic and @meraki_performance have spoken to me in the past about the meditative bliss that comes with long distance running. I thought it was a myth. I dont think that anymore. . There really is a feeling of freedom when you hit your stride. You dont feel like youre breathing hard. You dont feel the heaviness in your legs. Your perception of time dilates. You enter this state where you have absolute clarity in your thoughts, and although youve run another 500m, it feels like only a few seconds have gone by. . #running #weightlifting #strength See more

01.01.2022 I think it's safe to say that many of us were forced to adapt over the COVID-19 period. One such adaptation was the benefit of technology in keeping us in contact with our loved ones, but also our workplace. Blended work options are helping us free up time for other priorities, like family, friends, and our health. . Dave and I started working together because he wanted to jerk 100kg. We were close, but COVID struck, and we were forced to move our coaching sessions to a digit...al space. At first, I thought there would be a big difference between in person and virtual. And look, it IS different. But is it big? So far, I have to say it doesn't seem to be the case. Normally I am a very hands on coach, so I've had to rely on different tools to coach. . I know it CAN be done, case in point. And the other benefit is, for those of you who are busy professionals or parents, the benefit of having access to a coach as long as you have an internet connection is transformative. All you need is your own set up. . I am excited to announce that I will now be offering virtual 1 on 1 and SMALL group (2-3) sessions. This is best suited for those who have their own setup (or live close by to a gym), are time poor, or live far away from a weightlifting club. . #virtual #coach #weightlifting #clean #jerk #crossfit See more

01.01.2022 Can you guess what just happened? . And as a follow up, what we are talking about? . Towards the end, @sillisarah and I are actually talking about her lift, both technically and psychologically. Breaking down and understanding your lifter's thoughts pre lifts are just as important as the technical competencies.... . Coaching is a dynamic process, and luckily the virtual space doesnt take much of that away. . #virtual #coaching #weightlifting #clean #strength See more

01.01.2022 In this moment here, right here... there's no time to think. Any doubt or hesitation and you're done. . For the first 3 years, my mind was the main limiting factor. Come heavy attempts, I would review the cues. My palms would sweat. The bar suddenly felt much heavier off the floor. Fear. It took a while to figure it out but once I did, I could address it. . My lifting friends and I would joke about it but we all had it. It's called bitchitis.... . Jokes aside, I learnt to employ mental techniques to overcome this. . 1. Yell. Aggression overcomes fear. Thank you @jordan.b.peterson. . 2. Be present. I would be microscopically present when I approached the bar. I felt every toe walking up. Every finger when I chalked. Every muscle that I tensed. This removed all other lingering thoughts. . 3. Nail my pre-performance routine. Competition me starts in training, 4 weeks out. Every lift approach, set up, timing is EXACTLY the same. I'm robotic on game day. . I've been able to utilise only some of these techniques in my running journey so far under @coach.ic . More on that another time. . What psychological techniques do you employ in your training? . - @ohragnar . #weightlifting #strength #psychology #coach #personaltrainers #physiotherapy See more
