25.01.2022 Patellofemoral pain, or kneecap pain, will affect up to 25% of the general population every year. Prevention and management of patellofemoral pain can be challenging, but we recommend: Making sure all increases in activity and training load are gradual.... Maximising lower limb strength through hip and knee exercises. Doing a variety of activities - adolescents who specialise in just one sport or activity are more likely to develop patellofemoral pain. Other interventions such as knee taping, bracing and costly insoles may be useful, but should never be prioritised over exercise.... unfortunately there are no quick fixes!! #phillipsphysio #physio See more

18.01.2022 We all know the dozens of health benefits that accompany regular exercise. But what is the recommended dosage for good health? As always, the appropriate level for you depends on several factors, namely your current activity levels and co-morbidities. ‘Moderate intensity’ will be different for everyone, again depending on your current condition. A good way to gauge moderate intensity - you should be breathing harder than normal, but still able to speak in sent...ences. #phillipsphysio #physio See more

16.01.2022 RUNNING IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOUR KNEES!!! Some really interesting research that has recently been conducted.... Turns out all of that recreational jogging you did in your younger years probably wasnt the cause of your arthritic knee pain. We know that most exercise and loading is not only good for our joints and bones, it is actually protective against chronic joint conditions. Running (at the right dosage!!) is no different. 16.01.2022 Osteoarthritis is a condition that many of us have heard of, but surprisingly few know what it actually is. There are several types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common form. It is a common joint disease that usually affects middle aged and elderly people. While some people will describe osteoarthritis as wear and tear, we know that osteoarthritis affects the whole joint - the cartilage, joint lining, ligaments and bone.... Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the hand joints, spine, hips, knees and great toes. Interestingly, osteoarthritis symptoms can vary greatly among patients. Physiotherapy and exercise is very important in osteoarthritis management for managing pain and improving and maintaining joint function. #phillipsphysio #physio See more

08.01.2022 Current research recommends exercise and weight loss (if indicated) for best management of knee osteoarthritis. Exercise has been shown to be as effective as pain relief medication in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It is also a cheap, safe and non-invasive intervention that has a multitude of other health benefits. Contrary to popular belief, exercise WILL NOT ‘wear the knee out’ - it will enable your knee to gradually tolerate activities and loads that were previously a challenge. #phillipsphysio #physio

If your injury is preventing you from working, or from carrying out your normal duties at work or home. If your pain or injury is adversely affecting your mental health. 05.01.2022 The patella is a flat, inverted triangle shaped bone that sits at the front of the knee joint. As the name implies, the patella resembles a small dinner plate. The patella is a sesamoid bone, meaning it is embedded within a tendon or muscle. Babies are born without patella, but they ossify and have formed by around 3 years of age.... The patella functions like a pulley for the quadriceps muscle, increasing its strength by 35-50%. It also acts as a ‘spacer’ to protect the tendon by reducing friction and transmitting force evenly. #phillipsphysio #physio See more
