24.01.2022 Winter’s more than just the time to dig out the woollies and soup recipes it’s also when people need to thoroughly check heaters and electric blankets before ...putting them into service. Appliances and cords can easily get knocked around at the back of the cupboard, or gnawed on by rodents. Look for any signs of damage before plugging in if you find a fault, or if they trip your home’s safety switch when they’re turned on, they need to be repaired or binned. The other big cold weather danger is shocks and fires from electric heaters: keep them well away from flammable items like couches or beds, never leave them unattended, and never use them in wet areas like bathrooms. Stress can be triggered when we feel like we’re not in control or we can’t predict what might happen next. You can emotionally prepare by thinking ahead to what it might be like and trying to imagine yourself managing specific tasks or challenges. Dr Bernie suggests focusing on the factors you can control and the steps you can take to find your way through. If you focus and do the work ahead of a disaster, then you might find yourself in a better headspace during one.
