06.02.2022 When I finished school, I was looking at ways that I could combine two areas that I really enjoyed, science and food technology. Since being in clinical practice I discovered that much of the health information that we get taught is designed for the masses and not the individual. Over the past few years, I have been really interested in the food we eat and how that effects our body and therefore our health. I have a special interest in digestive health, I’m a little bit like ...a mechanic for your body, we all need some maintenance and fine tuning from time to time. Often I’m working with my clients to help them to gain a deeper understanding as to what the driving factors are behind their health complaint. I see a range of different clients from those that have had many medical investigative procedures and come up with no answers as to what it happening with their digestion getting dramatic changes to their digestive function in less than a fortnight, to parents with young families and looking to give their kids a head start nutritionally. As well as supporting long standing conditions like heart disease or post cancer clients working alongside them, to get the health outcomes they are looking for which might be to reduce medication load or increasing quality of life. As a client, key areas that you will walk away with are: (re)learning some food foundations and how to apply them into your life so that it can make an impact today, focusing on bio-mastery which is understanding what happened in your body that allowed it to get to the point there was illness and how to rebalance your health. The aspect of practise that I am really passionate about it helping people get more life and passion into the years that they have on the planet.

23.01.2022 Some things are better together... Synergy of Nutrients is a Foundation for Health Healthcare providers know the importance of assessing the vitamin D status of their patients. When vitamin D levels are low, supplementation is recommended, or the dosage may be increased if theyre already supplementing. Accumulating research demonstrates the intricate interrelationships between vitamin D and other nutrients. Its important to maintain optimal levels of all the fat-soluble vit...amins, but lets not forget magnesium. Magnesium Influences Vitamin D Status According to a new randomized trial published in 2018 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers demonstrated that magnesium influences vitamin D status. Magnesium had a regulatory effect, with magnesium deficiency essentially shutting down the vitamin D synthesis and metabolism pathway. More Interest in the Role of Magnesium The research team became interested in a role for magnesium because people respond to vitamin D differently, with levels of the vitamin in some individuals not rising even after being given high dosage supplements. This randomized study included 250 patients 40 to 85 years of age at risk for developing colorectal cancer due to having had a precancerous polyp removed or having other risk factors. Doses of magnesium and placebo were customized based on baseline dietary intake. Magnesium supplementation increased 25-OH vitamin D levels but not 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D when baseline levels were less than 30 ng/mL, but decreased both in a dose-dependent manner when levels were between 30 to 50 ng/mL. As a result, optimal magnesium status is important and plays a role in optimizing vitamin D status. Insufficiencies of both vitamin D and magnesium are common among patients. Over 75% of individuals have a calcium-to-magnesium ratio greater than 2.5, and up to 80% of people do not consume enough magnesium in a day to meet the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Most of these individuals are also vitamin D deficient. Consume Foods Rich in Magnesium and/or Vitamin D Patients should be advised to consume foods rich in magnesium and/or vitamin D, such as dark leafy greens, beans, whole grains, dark chocolate, fatty fish such as salmon, nuts, and avocados. Foods that provide vitamin K2, such as aged cheeses, organ meats, and egg yolks, can help protect against the vascular calcification that may result from high-dose vitamin D supplementation in the absence of adequate vitamin K2.

14.01.2022 For such a simple daily remedy that you can do that will look after your liver and gall bladder. Some people will use this as a coffee substitute, and works well in this setting. The bitter constituents of dandelion root stimulate the functions of the stomach, liver, and bile, causing a high diuresis and helping to eliminate toxins and metabolic wastes. Western cultures have tended to have less bitter foods so this a a way that you can introduce some bitter into your diet. 10.01.2022 People around the world have experienced a fundamental shift in their way of life due to COVID-19. Months into living with the virus the uncertainty, and challenges, of facing life with the pandemic have resulted in increased rates of depression, anxiety, worry and frustration for many people. The feelings of anxiety and stress are heightened by the ever-changing landscape and restrictions put in place by the government to actively manage the spread of the disease. This has ...left many people feeling discombobulated, struggling emotionally and financially, and led to a huge increase in demand for mental health services. Under these circumstances it is normal to feel anxious, overwhelmed, confused, sad or even bored. But these feelings can take their toll and we all need to take the time to care for ourselves and to look out for our clients, friends, family and colleagues. It is possible to shift anxious thoughts and behaviours by taking care of your mental health and wellbeing. This can be done by: Practicing self-care to help develop a positive frame of mind: This may involve maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle including a wholefoods, nutrient dense diet, exercising regularly, hydrating regularly with filtered water, getting quality sleep, minimising toxins and avoiding the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs to cope with stress, maintaining good social connections (even if virtually), practising relaxation, meditation and mindfulness, getting out into nature and sunshine (if possible) and making time for activities and hobbies. Live simply and practice gratitude. Develop new routines: Establishing some structure and rituals in your day will help to provide stability. Take breaks: Plan your breaks and use them to do something that makes you feel calm and happy. Limit your media exposure: Stay informed but not alarmed. Be mindful of exposure to information and try to limit how often you consume news updates on COVID-19. Remember that incorrect information is easily shared. Remain curious and question the source of everything you read or hear.

02.01.2022 Some people with low stomach acid levels commonly have symptoms of gas bloating flatulence and constipation or diarrhoea. This low acid environment slows digestion. The protein in their food sits in the stomach and putrefies instead of digesting. The sphincter between the stomach and small intestine delays opening because the protein is not properly broken down into peptides due to the insufficient HCL production. The small intestine does not want whole proteins; instead it ...needs the amino acids from the broken down proteins. This faulty digestive process is associated with low not high hydrochloric acid. These acids backflow into the esophagus causing the pain we know as acid reflux. The barrier that prevents HCL from traveling from your stomach up into your esophagus is called the esophageal sphincter. The cause of this sphincter dysfunction is inadequate levels of HCL. Since normal acid levels help prevent infection in your gut as well as enhance absorption of vitamins and minerals supplementation with betaine HCL will help to support these normal acid levels. The pancreas produces enzymes that are required for digestion and absorption of food. Enzymes secreted by the pancreas include lipases that digest fats, proteases that digest proteins, and amylases that digest starch. The health of the digestive tract is crucial for the overall health of the body. If food is not digested properly and toxins are not eliminated, it becomes very difficult to achieve optimal health. In addition, virtually every chronic condition will be exacerbated if the intestinal tract accumulates toxic by-products. Digestive enzymes decline 1% every three years after age thirty. Therefore, it is understandable why so many people need to supplement them for optimal digestion and assimilation of nutrients from food. Deficiency of endogenous production of digestive enzymes can lead to gas, bloating, constipation, malabsorption and a feeling of fullness after eating only a small quantity of food. Individuals who do not secrete enough proteases suffer from multiple food allergies. Failure to digest food allows for large molecules of the undigested food to be absorbed and cause such problems as food allergies, colitis, and immune system weakness. Proteases are essential in preventing the deposit of immune complexes in body tissue. Protease enzymes are effective in reducing circulating immune complex levels in patients with autoimmune disease. Undigested food also allows yeast organisms to thrive. This is a condition that I see a lot of in clinic so if you need help be sure to make an appointment: https://www.phillipchua.com/book-online-1
