25.01.2022 I've been really fortunate to "fall" into a lot of work over the years either advising organisations on how to prevent stakeholder outrage or at least remove themselves from that situation as quickly as possible. And while I never thought to myself as a kid, "when I grow up, I want to be in the middle of angry groups of people on deeply contentious issues", I really have been fortunate. You see, organisations often see "them" (the outraged community or individual) as being ...unreasonable. But often, after listening deeply to "them", I see that the outraged are very normal, decent people who may just have different goals to the organisation. So, outrage often occurs because of a "clash" or "collision" of goals. The challenge for organisations now is to: (a) anticipate that outrage is very likely going to come their way; and (b) question their (often old) ways of thinking and doing, which facilitate outrage. Engage with dignity, for example. Do you ever see this in your organisations, out of curiousity? #outrage #disruption #sustainability
24.01.2022 Leaders are lying awake at night struggling to figure out how to solve these seismic problems, but aren’t applying the decision making techniques required for a VUCA world (i.e. seeking a breadth and depth of context to be better informed and therefore able to make better decisions). This is from Chaos to Clarity: Thriving in a VUCA World, a book I am collaborating on with Bob Leonard. #VUCA #disruption #management
24.01.2022 I was staggered though still not surprised that some countries, including my own, won't sign up to a pledge committing to reversing biodiversity loss. While I am an optimist, I must admit that I got frustrated and bewildered when a government spokesman observed that: We will not agree to other targets unless we can tell the Australian people what they will cost to achieve and how we will achieve it, he said. This worldview of believing that the natural environment is someh...ow isolated from humanity and that there won't be heftier costs from doing nothing (that should be communicated to the Australian people) proves that dinosaurs aren't as extinct as we had thought. More sophisticated and holistic thinking is now necessary. Rant over. #biodiversity #leadership #vuca
21.01.2022 While my buddy Bob Leonard and I have now created our 16th article together, there has been a lot of exploration and reflection behind the scenes in order to understand our context and to get to this point. It hasn't always been easy but, by doing so, we have become better informed about what we need to write about. We'd love to hear your thoughts.... #vuca #disruption #leadership https://www.linkedin.com//david-ross-vuca-strategist-06a87

15.01.2022 For many leaders who may have just renewed or launched their first strategic plan, delivery is vital but a real challenge for so many. The implications of good delivery are wide-ranging. So, how do you ensure that you don't get distracted constantly by issues that are urgent, but unimportant? #vuca #leadership #management
11.01.2022 The uncertainty and complexity associated with our climate crisis makes it difficult for many companies to figure out how to tackle it. What is the way forward? In a VUCA world we have little confidence in how to proceed. Scenario Planning helps us develop confidence by working through a number of plausible futures to see what the implications are for each. 10.01.2022 I can't appreciate how tough it must be for some leaders at present. Such momentous change that we are experiencing! But your staff are also potentially doing it tough. How frequently are you talking to them? And how much time do you allocate to listening, deeply? (That could possibly be one of the most important things that you do). What will your legacy be?... #vuca #disruption #communication
09.01.2022 We should hold on to our long-term vision, but we must be willing to let go of our rigid and linear plans if we hope to achieve organizational objectives. In our VUCA environment, strategies must contain pathways that allow us to respond effectively to rapidly shifting trends, and that promote breakthroughs to our company’s next stage. It is crucial that organizations be agile and creative This is from Chaos to Clarity: Thriving in a VUCA World, a book I am collaborating on with Bob Leonard https://www.linkedin.com//david-ross-vuca-strategist-06a87
09.01.2022 Future-fit organizations actively prepare to respond to disruptions and anticipate change. Conventional logic works well for solving discrete problems with definite answers. But the wicked problems we face today require more creative responses. Issues as serious and complex as our climate crisis defy simple, straightforward solutions. Be careful not to deploy any strategy without thoroughly vetting it. In complex situations it is easy to create unintended consequences. 09.01.2022 A few years ago, I had the real privilege of studying advanced conflict transformation under Professor Galtung. Such a fascinating man. This brief article is for those who like exploring the bigger picture and geopolitics, for that matter! #vuca #strategy #humanity

06.01.2022 Recently, I felt so privileged to read the responses I got on LI to a question I asked, essentially, about what brings you joy (particularly during the pandemic). Thank you to so many for just amazing, insightful and warm reflections. With that in mind, I selfishly wanted to follow that up with another question, keen to learn from you. So here goes.... With all that has happened this year, what have you learnt about yourself?... Beautiful photo by Simon Migaj on Unsplash #VUCA #life #disruption
