22.01.2022 Be aware of the warning signs: If your computer suddenly slows down, if you get unusual error messages or email return messages from odd addresses, your computer could have a virus and/or malware. Contact Peter on 0422 88 00 89 for help.

20.01.2022 EMAIL WARNING: Please be aware that dangerous fake invoice emails are circulating. The email attachment causes dialogue boxes to open, which may install ransomware (which locks your computer and encrypts your files). Please don't open unexpected emails. If the attack gets so far that you see these dialogue boxes, ANSWER "NO" to the prompts and then run a scan using an updated, reputable anti-malware program.

20.01.2022 Be aware of the latest Medicare email scam, with links to a fake myGov website, designed to steal your personal and banking information.

19.01.2022 SCAM WARNING: If youre buying online, please be aware of a current scam catching online Christmas shoppers. Scammers send fake emails that look like they come from Australia Post, FedEx or other parcel delivery companies. They may demand a fee to release an undelivered parcel and direct their intended victim to open an attachment, click a link or download a file, any of which can infect a computer or network with ransomware, locking files and demanding payment for the softwa...re to unlock them. Remember that Australia Post will advise of undeliverable packages with a notice in your letterbox. Delete "undeliverable package" emails that claim to be from Australia Post. If you receive an "undeliverable package" email from another delivery company, check with them using contact details from their official webpage or in the phone book. (Dont click email links.) Never click links or download files in an email unless you know the sender are expecting the file (.exe files and .zip files can be particularly dangerous). Always back up your data.

16.01.2022 LAPTOP LOW BATTERY TIPS: If your laptop is running on fumes but there's nowhere to charge the battery, try these tips to stretch out the remaining power: 1. Switch on Battery Saver Mode (also known as Eco Mode) 2. Unplug or turn off any devices you're not actually using, (such as the external drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth radio) 3. Turn down the screen brightness, turn off keyboard backlighting, mute speakers.... 4. Cross your fingers and toes! If this happens to you often, maybe carry a spare battery or external battery pack with you. See more

15.01.2022 Currently on Peters work bench - looks like this one has been going almost non-stop for 20 years, running a digital measurer in a factory. 5-year component life and you can see the date (1997) on the stickers. This computers been running for as long as Peter has been working with computers!

15.01.2022 COMPUTER TIP: It is so important to protect your computer with a reputable anti-virus program, but make sure you only have one installed at a time. If you'd like to try different anti-virus software, be sure to uninstall one before installing another.

15.01.2022 Happy Easter to all our customers and friends. Peters taking a few well-earned days off now and will return to work on Tuesday, 18 April.

14.01.2022 Be aware of this scam email purporting to be from Medicare and asking you to update your details on a fake myGov website. Genuine government websites always end with .gov.au.

12.01.2022 If you delete and empty an important file by mistake, don't panic. Peter may be able to retrieve it for you if you contact him as soon as possible. To reduce the chances of overwriting the lost file, don't save anything in the meantime.

12.01.2022 WARNING: Scam emails that claim to be from e-Toll, Australia Post, AFP and Spotify currently circulating. Beware of "View in OneDrive" links (which download malware) and "Update your billing" links (which take you to a fake sign-in page to steal your info). Delete these emails immediately. If in doubt, contact the company via their genuine website (find it via Google, if you don't already know the web address).

12.01.2022 AVOID MALWARE (This is what you need to do): 1. Only open emails and their attachments from known, trusted sources and if you're prompted to run macros or "execute the application specified in the command" DO NOT allow. 2. When scammers phone to tell you your computer has a problem and that you should visit their website and install their malware, just hang up.... 3. If you're concerned that a worrying email or phonecall may be genuine, use contact information from the official website (google search) to check. 4. Watch what you download and only update software (eg. flash, video player, security software etc) from the genuine official software website. Even legitimate software can be laced with malware if you download it from a dodgy site. 5. Just visiting a website (without downloading anything) can be risky, especially if the website is dodgy, has been hacked or if your software is outdated - update it when prompted (from the genuine software website). 6. If you're using a public, unsecured wifi network, don't allow file-sharing across a network (turn off sharing through the control panel or choose the "Public" option when you connect). Enable "Always use HTTPS" on websites and turn wifi off when you don't need it. 7. Never insert a removable storage device (CD, USB etc) from an unknown or untrusted source into your computer. 8. Malware can breed. A malware infection can let more malware into your computer. If you find malware, deal with it promptly. 9. Install trusted anti-virus and anti-malware software. We use and recommend Malwarebytes. 10. Regularly backup your data (then disconnect the backup device) so that if the worst happens, you won't lose irreplaceable photos and other files. (I'll write more about backing up your files in an upcoming post.) And if you need help, contact Peter on 0422 880 089 to book an appointment

12.01.2022 EMAIL DANGER: Be aware of the latest email ransomware campaign of realistic emails that appear to contain an invoice from eBay. DELETE IMMEDIATELY - DO NOT CLICK LINKS. These emails are almost identical to genuine eBay messages. A second type of ransomware email appears to contain a link to a voice message. Links contained in both of these emails may infect your computer with ransomware. These emails are particularly dangerous because they appear genuine. Be sure to back up your data regularly in case the worst happens.

07.01.2022 UPDATE: ALL STATE, CATHOLIC AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED TODAY. Bit damp out there and the forecast is for more rain up until the weekend. These links might come in handy: RACQ road closures - seems to be updated more regularly than MBRC's website. I'll be checking here before Peter ventures out today.... http://roadconditions.lbs.racq.com.au//report/highload.html# The Qld Govt hasn't listed any local school or tafe closures so far (http://closures.det.qld.gov.au/), however you might want to check with your school admin and use common sense. Roads that are clear this morning may flood over the course of the day. MBRC flood maps are available here: https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/general.aspx?ekfrm=113995 If you need sand and sandbags, they are available locally from Margate, opposite the Council Depot in Jull Street, Margate and the Deception Bay Council Depot carpark, Old Bay Road, Deception Bay. (Full MBRC list here: https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/emergency.aspx?id=142350) Keep your phone charged and check media updates regularly. The SES number is 132 500 for emergencies only. Stay off the roads if you can, allow extra travel time if you have to go out, and if it's flooded, forget it. Be safe!

04.01.2022 5 WARNING SIGNS OF A FAILING HARD DRIVE: 1. Random computer freezes that are not related to particular software or time or event and can only be fixed by complete reboot 2. Blue screens 3. Grinding and/or clicking... 4. Disappearing files 5. Saving and opening files (even small ones) take waaaay too long. THE SOLUTION: Immediately back up your data and then contact Peter. He'll run a diagnostic and, if necessary, remove the failing drive and replace it with a new one. 02.01.2022 3 EASY WAYS TO BACK UP YOUR FILES: Keep your photos and data safe with one of these methods: 1. Plug an External Hard Drive into your computer's USB port, drag and drop files using Windows Explorer or Finder for Mac. External Hard Drives are found at electrical, computer or office supply stores. Label well, store safely and handle with care - good for lots of large files. ... Even easier: Peter can set up automatic and simutaneous back-ups to your External Hard Drive. 2. Plug a USB Flash Drive into your computer's USB port and drag and drop files. Also found at electrical, computer or office supply stores, as well as supermarkets and newsagents. Price depends on storage capacity and speed at accessing files. Store safely, label well. 3. Get a password-protected online service such as iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox etc. You can reach your files from virtually any internet connection, also good for transferring files. This is a better option if you're on an NBN plan. For precious files or if you have a small business, a duplicate back-up on an additional drive stored off-site is important for extra security. If you'd like some help with backing-up your important files, please book an appointment with Peter on 0422 880 089.

01.01.2022 Laptops are at greater risk of theft or damage than desktop computers, simply because they are portable. Make sure you back up your laptop hard drive regularly so you don't lose valuable data if the worst happens.
