25.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 8 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Roseville Another exciting round ahead of us. After our last match drubbing, we had to show improvement in our performance. This was going to be a good contest as the opposition was a very good all round team....Continue reading

24.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 16 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Strathfield Cricket Club I was excited to be back and I was sure the boys were too. That was until I went for the toss and lost it on a 40 degree blistering day. No surprises there and also that we were asked to bowl first. Did I mention how excited I was to be back!!!... Regular openers Jeby and Nandu were quickly into action. Tight bowling and good fielding were key in this hot weather to contain the batting. Harder said than done though. It seemed to have worked as the opposition batsman found it difficult to rotate the strike and resorted to trying to hit the ball out of the ground. They got one out of the park but witty Jeby hit back with his wicket. Jeby was on song with 4 x top order wickets supported alongside the other bowlers. The trick was to slow down the pace on this track. Maari and newbie Pradeep did just that. They dried up the runs and wickets were the result due to the constant pressure. The opposition all out for 104 in the 38th over with 15 of those runs in extras. A phenomenal effort in the first half by the bowling and fielding unit who took 9 catches to restrict the opposition. Second dig and our batsman were cautious against their new ball attack. Things were seemingly going smoothly at 22 for no loss when out of nowhere 2 wickets fell in 2 balls to needless shots. Bhushan and Sanjeev had to start the rebuilding phase. They played out a lot of good pressure bowling from the opposition who got a spring in their step suddenly after the two wickets. After settling in the runs slowly started to pile on. Again when it seemed we were coasting, we lost another wicket ( harsh call for LBW). It was on Bhushan the key contributor to guide the run chase home along with Dhinash who was fighting his internal struggles with cramps. With a few boundaries and good running, the chase was completed in the 35th over with the loss of 3 wickets. Bhushan (46 not out) knowing how important the chase was with his brazen celebration after the winning runs were scored. A good feather in the cap for the chasers. A good lift before we enter the important last stages before qualification. Balmain South Sydney - 105/3 in 34.3 overs Strathfield Cricket Club - 104/10 in 38.3 overs Reported by Sandeep Nagarajan No photo was taken during the chase due to the tension. So we have put up Bhushan actual photo.

20.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 7 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Georges River Well well well!!! What do we have here. Another loss at the toss. No surprises there and no surprises that Georges picked batting on the flattest track in the tiniest ground possible. A bowlers nightmare some say.... Georges Rivers batsman came out with a bang and I mean actual bang. Each and every ball was tasked to hit the fence on the full. But our bowlers were equal to the task of baiting them into thinking they could hit out of the park. Ismail and Manee were bowling a dream spell with the support of Jeby and Nandu which saw us reduce Georges to 50/4. Sadly, this was where the dream ended and the nightmare began. Dropped catches cost us dearly and I mean dearly. What would have been 60/6 or 70/6 turned out to become 150/4 with the two batman’s making us pay dearly and taking us to the cleaners with boundaries and sixes. Our bowlers had a good comeback with restricting them at the end by holding onto catches to knock the opposition out for 187. It seemed a better score to chase as the opposition scored 260 on the same ground the week before. It was an up and down battle in the first half but the score of 187 was chasable with the batting prowess we possess and the pitch did not have any demons whatsoever. But things didn't go according to plan with us losing a wicket in the first ball of our batting innings and then another soon after. We were reeling at 5/24 even before the halfway stage with 3 batsman not able to get off the mark. Samy (18) and Ismail (26) battled it out there but with the loss of so many wickets meant they had to play with a conservative approach (not able to dispatch bad balls). The pressure soon got the best of all of us and we were put out of our misery at 103 in the 32nd over. A thorough beating and we had nowhere to hide. This loss was a big wakeup call for the team as we had to look at our application in all 3 departments. I could see a collective hurting by the team after this loss so there was only one way to go and that was to improve. There will be no let up for us as in the following week, we will be facing another strong opponent and looking forward to a much improved performance. Balmain South Sydney - 103/10 in 32.3 overs Georges River- 187/10 in 37.4 overs Reported by Sandeep Nagarajan

20.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 6 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Strathfield Let me just get this out of the way. LOL!!! After extensive, brain zapping sessions by my teammates they came up with the brilliant plan that the toss should be done by the vice-captain Pavan to change my bad run with the toss. ...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 5 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Lindfield Cricket Club TossWon By the opposition and they elected to bat on a flat wicket.... Nandu and Jeby started out the proceedings with attacking lines and lengths. Jeby picking a wicket off the first bowl of his spell and Nandu chipping in with two early wickets. They shared 5 wickets between themselves within the first 10 overs to restrict Lindfield to 8 runs. This good start was backed up Manee who bowled a 5 over spell with 3 maidens and claiming 2 wickets. His searing yorkers doing a trick on the batsman. Pavan cleared up the opposition with 2 wickets in a over with a brilliant reflex stumping by stand in keeper Bhushan. This display of dominant bowling had us needing to chase down 46. Pavan and Dhinash went in and absorbed some good bowling by the opposition. They started taking singles and some occasion boundaries. We chased down the target in 13 overs with a loss of 1 wicket. Dhinash remaining not out for 26 runs. Balmain South Sydney - 48/1 in 13.1 overs Lindfield Cricket Club - 46/10 in 21.0 overs Reported by Sandeep Nagarajan

18.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 14 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Macquarie University. Nithin providing a refreshing start to the new year with his style of reporting as below, An unpredictable pitch, with rain forecasted. 6 overs down the lane, umpire thought he will make himself relevant by taking players off the ground because of the smoke. The break worked better for us. After a decent chat with bowlers, first over after the restart, Manee strikes with the length and li...ne like we discussed. It kept raining and became quite difficult for bowlers and fielders alike. Our normal bowlers were struggling a bit after first 2 wickets. Izzy brought in DK. Second ball was a wicket. Then he bowled full 8 overs, taking 4 wickets. Well supported by Harish. Fielders did their best to support the bowlers in tough slippery conditions. Ball didn’t look like a cricket ball at the end of our innings. Then batting, we chased down reasonably ok in a tricky wicket, albeit losing 5 wickets. In the end, win quite comfortably in a tricky sticky mud wicket Reported by Nithin Cherian

18.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 9 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Burwood Briars Wishful thinking to win toss and bat first. So we settled for losing the toss and bowling. Nandu and Jeby started off the bowling with good lines as usual. Quickly enough, Jeby got the first break through to an excellent catch by Ismail in the slips. This was followed by a good stranglehold by Issy and Samy with their bowling.... Now before we go ahead I would like to acknowledge tremendous sportsmanship shown by Burwood who gave us a fielder since our bowler was down due to injury. In the meantime, Pavan, Samy and myself were trying hard along with the fielding unit to keep the runs in check. The coming together of the fielding unit led to 2 X run outs and Samy being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 wickets with 4 maidens in 7 overs and giving away just 8 runs. Eventually we got Burwood all out for 97 in the 39th over. Not the best of starts for us with the bat with us struggling at 3/27in the 7th over. Bhushan and Pavan rode through the barrage of their bowlers who were on a high. Slowly picking up the pace. The occasional boundary and quick running between the wickets helped elevate the pressure and these two batsmen were set. Bhushan brought up his second fifty for the season and Pavan was also solid at the other end. Both batsmen finally getting us over the mark in the 28th over. A very good, mature and disciplined display of batting by our team who are learning slowly but steadily the art of chasing scores. Balmain South Sydney - 98/3 in 27.5 overs Burwood Briars - 97/10 in 38.4 overs Reported by Sandeep Nagarajan

05.01.2022 Shires Cricket round 20 One day Match Lindfield vs Balmain South Sydney Australia was hoping for rain and the prayers were answered. This means we spent the last couple of games enjoying the rain at home. Everyone was excited to be on the ground after what seemed like a summer break. The ground was a familiar one owing to being the teams home ground for 2 years in the recent past. A tricky day ahead with clouds looming over and rain forecast. It was announced before the g...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 10 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs North West Sydney Another lovely day, a lovely home game and a lovely way to be given a chance to bowl first on a green pitch. It was a bit of a tricky pitch to read as it was definitely hard, but had a tinge of green and for the first hour or so had some moisture as it had rained the previous night. The pack hunters, Nandu and Jeby shared the new ball. With Nandu picking the first wicket off the third ball o...f the day, a nice clean bowled. The onus should always be its highest with respect to the fielding. This has been our notion at the start of the season and will continue till the end. A perfect example shown by Jeby who had the batsman short with a quick grab and release which resulted in a direct hit from midwicket. A little bit of a partnership started with the opponents and from 2/3, they were back on terms at 2/40 in the 10th over. This was broken by the early introduction of Samy who got the batsman leg before wicket for 36. This brought about another wicket quickly by Issy. A little bit of loose bowling led to another partnership which was crushed again by the introduction of Jeby back into the attack. Pavan and Samy finally set to end the visitors stay at the grease sooner with tight bowling lines but fielding mishaps, catches dropped and some lustful blows at the end got the visitors up to 129 in the 37th over. We needed to chase again but this time we had to shuffle the batting unit as our regular top order were absent. Pavan took the responsibility to open with Dhinash and was true to his word of taking ownership. Good defense followed by quick running between the two had us at 40 in the 11th over. This was followed by 2 quick wickets with the score reading 55/2 in the 15th over. Pavan and Bhushan seem to have found some new found love for each other in the middle as they just seem to love batting with each other. Carrying from last match into this one, they continued on with some brilliant stroke play and strike rotation. Quickly enough, Pavan was lifting his bat to a well played, well timed and much needed fifty. Bhushan remaining not out at the end with an equally supportive 36, saw us cross the line in the 32nd over. A lot of positives from the game especially since we are now starting to chase a little better and a lot of things to fine tune into next year for the business end of the tournament. The next few games are going to be a test of character of our team and also an opportunity to utilize the chances that a lot of the players have been craving from day 1. Keep doing the simple things in the right way and the results will follow. This will be my last post of the year. Here's wishing you all a very Happy New Year.Go Phoenix!! Balmain South Sydney - 130/3 in 31.4 overs North West Sydney - 129/10 in 38 overs Reported by Sandeep Nagarajan

03.01.2022 Shires cricket - Round 17 - One day match - Balmain South Sydney vs Epping Cricket Club As expected, the game day was hot and humid which meant whoever winning the toss had to bat first. And then it finally happened - Balmain captain wins the toss for the very first time in 17 games this season. Unbelievable as it was but at the same time it was a blessing in disguise considering the weather, especially battling the humidity. Openers in the form of DK and Nithin strolled into...Continue reading
