05.01.2022 Phoenix House continues to acknowledge Aboriginal Australians and education this week. The Close the Gap strategy was launched in 2006. The campaign aims to address the unacceptable gap in life expectancy and other health indicators, including education, between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. The recent Closing The Gap report states that only two of the original seven targets are on track to be met within their timeframes ( www....humanrights.gov.au). This is not good enough. Each year, Phoenix House Youth Service located in Crows Nest, Sydney, provides support programs to more than 300 young people each year to help them realise their dreams and aspirations, unlock their potential, achieve their goals and transform their lives. Family breakdown, family violence, isolation, mental health and addiction issues do not discriminate and cut across the whole community the Northern Sydney area is no different. The significant number of young people who need support remains a hidden concern, with the shortage of suitable services in the area a key issue. One in eight young people in the Northern Sydney area aged between 15 to 19 years is not in education or employment.
