25.01.2022 Three happy customers making newspaper pots. Bring the kids for a visit to Green St until 11:30.

25.01.2022 Thank you to all the Future Farmers from Ashtonfield Public School who completed the Growing Future Farmers program this term. We really enjoyed having you on the farm.

25.01.2022 After a lot of thought I’ve come to the tough decision sell the remainder of potato crop. I would very much like to eat all of them, preferably roasted in lamb fat with rosemary and garlic. However, I think that it’s in the best interests of my pot belly that I refrain from doing so. Therefore they are up for grabs. $30 gets you a box (approx 15kg) of the best spuds in NSW (probably). Pick up is from the farm on Friday from 4-5:30pm or Saturday from 8-9am. Order via private message please. There is a limited amount so get in quick.

24.01.2022 An innovative company which we are proud to partner with to deliver our education programs.

24.01.2022 If anyone would like to listen to a farmer prattle on about farms and stuff tune in to ABC radio 1233am at 4:20pm. I’ll try to be interesting.

23.01.2022 Thank you 5B from Ashtonfield Public School for a great term. We really enjoyed having you on the farm. You all should be proud of the work that you did and the veggies that you grew.

23.01.2022 I’ve just had a covid test and they said I need to self isolate. No problem, I said.

21.01.2022 Alongside our Growing Future Farmers program we also offer permaculture garden design and construction. The next phase will be teaching the kids all about science and nature in the context of growing their own food!

17.01.2022 The Slow Food Hunter Valley Community Cooking program has provided thousands of nourishing meals to people in need in the Maitland community, and has continued ...during the COVID-19 lock down and restrictions to help ensure disadvantaged people have access to healthy and tasty meals. This program relies on produce generously donated by our local farmers, our wonderful dedicated volunteers who cook the meals, OzHarvest Newcastle for donations and the deliveries, and our very generous local businesses and community! We'd like to say a special thank you to the recent donations and grants from: Blackbutt Farm Organics for the four frozen turkeys (originally intended for a Christmas in July event). local artist Kay Sparkes who generously donated $100. Kay has been very generous to us, and also donated one of her beautiful paintings that was raffled at the Taste Festival a couple of years ago. Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise Inc for your donation of $500. This will be used for our 'pantry fund' of staples such as cream, butter and flour. Stockland for the $1000 Stockland CARE Grant which will be used towards supplying meat. OzHarvest Newcastle for the regular donations of supermarket produce. Regular donations of fresh produce, particularly from our local farmers MC & SL Dennis, Austin Breiner, Phoenix Park Farm, Little Tin Shed Medowie, and Just Been Laid. Reader's Cafe and Larder for your ongoing support and commitment to the program. Maitland City Council who have generously waived the lease fees for the cooking program premises until further notice. Thank you so much for your support, it is donations from the community that enable us to continue what we are doing

16.01.2022 Our soils are our most important resource. Us farmers and gardeners are guardians of this fragile, complex and oh so wonderful stuff.

15.01.2022 Hi all. I justed wanted to clarify that I’ll be holding a produce market in Morpeth on Sunday from 9am-12pm. The farm gate stall and Coffee Coop is NOT open this weekend. The Maitland Mercury.

15.01.2022 If you have ever wondered what it takes to grow potatoes organically preparation starts months in advance. Firstly, you need to plant a green manure crop to add nitrogen and organic matter to the soil. To do this, I lightly cultivated the soil then broadcast a mix of lab lab (a legume for nitrogen) and Sudax (a tall grass for organic matter). Lastly, I went over the ground with the harrows and roller which covers the seed. To ensure good seed to soil contact I rolled the see...d bed three times! This is a whole days work. In January, I will cultivate the crop back into the soil and then plant my potato crop. Growing this way is very labour intensive, has additional fuel and seed costs not to mention that a hectare of land is not able to grow a cash crop because it is growing green manure. I grow this way because I want to improve soil health and ensure that I leave this land even better then when I started. I also want to grow the most delicious potatoes in probably Australia. 15.01.2022 Morpeth is a great place to visit. Full of history, cafes and great views across to a certain farm on the river.

14.01.2022 Each Friday this term the students in 5B have visited Phoenix Park Farm as part of the Growing Future Farmers program. The students have been learning about foo...d production by caring for the chickens, collecting eggs and growing their own vegetables. Through this experience they have been developing the skills of responsibility, team work and resilience. Mrs Ball is extremely proud of her students and the way in which they have enthusiastically engaged with the experiences at the farm. Farmers Josh and Jesse, who run the program, regularly comment on how hard working, respectful and interested the students are. We are all looking forward to harvesting the vegetables and enjoying the product of this term's hard work.

13.01.2022 Our Growing Future Farmers program is a great experience for kids where they learn valuable lessons about where their food comes from. By giving them responsibility for a vege plot and looking after chickens they also develop valuable life skills like responsibility, team work and resilience. With day visits and term long programs available. Send us a message if you would like your child to be involved.

Congratulations to the winners of our free vege box draw Chantell, Kellie, Rebecca, Sally and Tracey. I’ll be in touch shortly to organise your free box of delicious organic goodness.

08.01.2022 Vege seedlings for sale in green st this morning!

07.01.2022 RECIPE IDEA I always look forward to the first and third Thursday of the month because it’s Earth Market day and what’s more exciting than being able to buy... new season produce. Think spring think green. Make sure you add plenty of fresh greens to all your spring dishes peas, snap or snow peas, broccoli, kale, silverbeet and whatever heirloom greens you find at Austin Breiner’s market stall. After an early start on market day, I’m super hungry by lunchtime. I discovered a recipe for Green Cheese Toasties by Jill Dupleix in the Good Food section of the Sydney Morning Herald. I’ve renamed it the Earth Market Maitland Toastie because it’s my go-to market day lunch now. For an extra delicious treat, make some kale chips from the rest of your bunch (see step 2 below but cook for 10 minutes) and serve as a healthy side to your toastie. You can purchase most of the ingredients at the 17th September - Slow Food Earth Market Maitland. We hope you enjoy this week’s #meatlessmonday idea. Earth Market Maitland Toastie 100g small broccoli florets per serve 2T olive oil, 50g curly kale leaves destalked and broken into small pieces 2 slices sourdough bread per serve Mustard of your choice mashed avocado per serve Pickled jalapeno chillies to taste Sliced or grated cheese of your choice (I used gruyere) 1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees C. Toss the broccoli with salt, pepper and a little olive oil and place on an oven tray. Bake for 15 minutes. 2. Massage kale leaves with a little olive oil and season with salt. Add to the oven tray for 5 minutes or until wilted. Remove and chop roughly. 3. For each toastie, spread one slice of bread with mustard and top with chopped jalapeno, kale and cheese. Spread the other slice with mashed avocado and pile on the broccoli. Gently press the two halves together. 4. Brush outer sides of sandwich with olive oil and place in a frypan over a low heat. Fry for 2 minutes each side. Use a flat plate to press the sandwich down into the pan. 5. Cut toastie in half and serve with extra jalapeno chillies and kale chips. See original recipe: https://www.goodfood.com.au//green-cheese-toasties-2015090 We love to see what you are cooking with your fresh produce and please feel free to share your favourite recipes and food pictures with us. ~ Helen
