25.01.2022 COOL THINGS ON YOUTUBE Who's heard of Walk Off The Earth? I just came across this video. So many cool things happening in this video! "How are the kittens?" ... If you've heard of them, what your favourite video of theirs?
24.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT the Wunderkeys Concert, Jahnavi performed Main Street Mayhem by Andrea Dow. This comes from a book that develops a students' sightreading skills which is enhanced by making a game of mixing up some of the bars in the song and reordering them by simply rolling a die that chooses the order for them. For this performance, Andrea said it was a very professional performance. She was impressed with the range of dynamics that Jahnavi had incorporated. Andrea... was also impressed with how confident she was with her age and made a special mention to how even she played it. Well done, Jahnavi!
24.01.2022 FILL IN THE BLANK! I'll go first. I recently saw a Tik Tok video with a guy that sings to his cat, and one of the songs is Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah . The cat hates it, but his voice is pretty impressive! Have you seen it? What would you answer for this?

22.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT In Sunday's WunderKeys Concert with Andrea Dow, Cole performed They'll Be Back from Fearless Fortissimo Book 1. This book is an excellent book for young teens as they follow the journey of Fearless Fortissimo, and musical superhero, in a comic style book. Andrea said he set the mood really nicely, and was able to tell the story really well. We knew what sort of story he was telling just by the way he was playing it. She was pleased with the legato pla...ying and can't wait to see how he'll be playing a year from now. Well done, Cole!
20.01.2022 COOL THINGS ON YOUTUBE Just found this clip on YouTube. Its only 3 minutes long but is a pretty cool demonstration of how the brain interacts with music. (Not as deep as it sounds.) Deep thoughts: Im fascinated that the instinct isnt to follow the major scale. It seems like he has somewhat wired them to sing the pentatonic scale by indicating la in his jump down from do. Im also amused that the audience completely fried when he split from re.... Would love to hear your thoughts!
20.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Recently, Eowyn completed her 2nd Grade flute exam. Her own choice piece was Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon. Eowyn is obsessed with this movie and wonders how I can still live without having seen it yet. She was ecstatic however that she was able to play it for her exam. She passed her exam with honours! Now we are well on track to working on her Grade 3 exam.... Well done, Eowyn!

18.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT For today's video, we have Charlotte performing In My Garden. In My Garden comes from a super cute story book about a rabbit that resists piano lessons to cook different carrot recipes. Along they way, the rabbit learns about different music intervals, and this piece encompasses all of the intervals. This book is actually a bonus for Charlotte because she has already learnt the intervals in her Piano Adventures book which she is nearly finishing soon!... I thought it would be an excellent book to reinforce what she has learnt in Level 1. Andrea, the composer was very positive about Charlotte's playing and commended her on her focus - you can see the cogs turning as she performs the piece! She was also impressed by Charlotte's ability to shift the melody seemlessly between hands. If you had your eyes closed, you couldn't even tell she was changing hands! Well done, Charlotte!
18.01.2022 TEACHER SPOTLIGHT Hello! You don't often see much of me on this page because I believe in sharing the student's successes more than sharing mine, but today I'm shaking it up! I'm David and I am the tutor at Phoenix Rising Music Studio. I am a graduate of Sydney Conservatorium of Music. I teach most days of the week, and in my spare time I am either studying to become a better teacher, or working in music theatre, however that is difficult at the moment given the current... global pandemic. I have recently started my own theatre company in Western Sydney called Fantasia Showstoppers. Go and check it out - not much to see there yet but there are some exciting things on the horizon. To wrap up, I just wanted to let you know that I have a few vacancies at the moment - I have a few spots on Tuesdays after school, and I'm also preparing to open a brand new teaching day either on Mondays or Wednesdays. If you're interested in getting started, head over and check my website then get in touch. I'd love to hear from you! I also offer online lessons if you're out of area, and I can also cater to home school students who may be available for lessons during the day. Feel free to reach out! www.phoenixrisingmusicstudio.com.au All the best, David See more
17.01.2022 #theartofkindness Today is R U OK day. This day serves as a reminder that every day is a day to check in with your friends and family and simply ask if they are ok. Today, I am encouraging you to reach out to someone, check in and ask them if they are ok, and then follow the A.L.E.C. system: A = ask. ... L = listen with an open mind and without judgement. E = encourage action. This can take many forms, including professional help. C = check in. There are many amazing resources out there. R U OK website, headspace, reach out, kids help line, lifeline (13 11 14), mental health access line (1800 011 511). Who will you check in with?

14.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Mritthunjai is one of the hardest workers in the studio. Every week he practices so much which meant we were able to fly so fast through his Level 1 book. Mritthunjai is very good with memorising his pieces as well. He performed his WunderKeys piece without looking at the music! You'll see that some time this month. Now we are working through Level 2A alongside more music by WunderKeys.... Well done, Mritthunjai!
13.01.2022 Congratulations to all the students who performed in todays concert with our special guest and composer, Andrea Dow! How privileged we are to be able to connect with a Canadian composer and to present a collection of songs written by Andrea and her husband, Trevor. Once I get the students permission, I will be sure to share some of their recordings in the coming weeks! From Andrea:... The students of Phoenix Rising Music Studio were absolutely delightful! Sitting in my piano room with an evening summer breeze wafting through my window while listening to students perform live in Sydney, Australia was a magical moment for me! So many clever students with fabulous performances. Thank you for inviting me to your studio David Catterall! #WunderKeysWorldTour WunderKeys Piano Method Books

09.01.2022 BOOK COMPLETED Congratulations, Rose on completing your Piano Adventures Level 1 book! Rose has been working hard through this book and has also been working through Kelzo Keys, one of the WunderKeys books students have been playing with recently. One song from Kelzo Keys, she thought sounded too sad so she made her own version which sounded much happier. Who wants to hear it? ... Well done, Rose!
08.01.2022 Also pleased to share that Teddy has completed his first WunderKeys Pre-School book! His FAVOURITE Wunderbie is Pointer Panda and his rainbow cousin who join us for every lesson! Well done, Teddy!
07.01.2022 #THEARTOFKINDNESS For something a bit different, and something that can be a bit of a regular feature on this page, I'd like to dedicate Thursdays to being kind. It costs us nothing, and it is very easy to do, so each Thursday I will share a new act of kindness that you can do right now. You can share this post, comment below about who you interacted with, give a thumbs up if you did something kind.... The world is in a rough spot, and it's easy to get bothered by insignificant things. Let's override that and remind people how simple it is!
07.01.2022 WHAT'S ON OFFER Does your child enjoy playing games? Well so do I! Occasionally students will be invited to play games in their lessons. Now you might be thinking - aren't they there to learn music? Yes!! These games reinforce what they've been learning in their lessons in a way that they don't even realise. Does this sound something your child would love?... Well fortunately, I have some availabilities for new students. Go to www.phoenixrisingmusicstudio.com.au to sign up. Spaces are limited!

05.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT You knew it was coming! It's our Student of the Month - Charlotte! Charlotte has completed her Piano Adventures Level 1 book after a tough push through the final song of the book. She has been getting her head around the new positions successfully on the piano and will be starting on Level 2B in her next lesson. Well done, Charlotte!
05.01.2022 TESTIMONIAL Eowyn has been learning from me for over two years now. She has completed exams and also performed in Eisteddfods. We are currently preparing for an AMEB Grade 3 exam. Thank you, Holly for the wonderful review you left on Google earlier this week!... Check out the studio website for more information on flute lessons: https://www.phoenixrisingmusicstudio.com.au/flute/
04.01.2022 STUDENT OF THE MONTH Introducing Student of the Month - the first Saturday of each month will feature one of the students at Phoenix Rising Music Studio. Charlotte has been learning piano with Phoenix Rising Music Studio since February 2017 and her sister was learning flute before then!... On Thursday, Charlotte was having a tough day so I decided to change it up a bit and pulled out my Disney book. Charlotte loves Disney (perhaps not as much as I do), but we decided to have a play through some of the songs in the book, and within the lesson, she had learn the song Beauty and the Beast with very little help on my part, we even recorded it so she could show her mum when she got home. She was feeling a lot better by the end of the lessons and went home with a smile on her face and feeling very proud of what she had accomplished. It's for this reason that she has been chosen as Student of the Month, and will hence feature as the new profile image for this month. You may see a photo of her pop up soon since she has recently hit a new milestone! Well done, Charlotte! Thank you to her family also for being long time supporters of Phoenix Rising Music Studio!
04.01.2022 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Today's Student Spotlight features Tia who performed Threezie in the WunderKeys Concert hosted by Andrea Dow recently. Threezie is in a sense, a study, that focuses on playing triplets (3 notes to a beat), and incorporates the form of a lead sheet, where she is given chord symbols to play in the left hand instead of the usual notes on the staff. This is a skill that will allow her in future to pick up any pop song and play along using the chord indicat...ions - a great skill to have when accompanying singers. For this performance, Andrea was very pleased with how well controlled the triplets were and how even they were. She was also impressed with Tia's rhythm when there were more complex rhythms in the middle of the song. She felt that Tia had a good sense of the style, since when we play pop music, it's not the same as classical music so we play it differently. Well done, Tia!
03.01.2022 New Student Alert During quarantine, I was very fortunate to pick up a couple of returning students that were missing lessons due to location restrictions, and Ive also been fortunate to pick up another new student! Pleased to welcome Luca to the studio who I was fortunate to work with in Kinky Boots last year! Luca has had 7 lessons so far using the Accelerated Piano Adventures method and has recently been given a comic orientated piano book called Fearless For...tissimo by Teach Piano Today - today he showed me the whole first section of his first piece from memory! Well done, Luca
03.01.2022 BOOK COMPLETED Congratulations Kaito on completing your Piano Adventures Level 2B book! Kaito has now finished his time with Piano Adventures books. Next we are moving on to exploring more from WunderKeys, with a specific focus on pop music, with a splash of animé, alongside a bit of jazz music that he has been enjoying recently!... Well done, Kaito!
02.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who voted! Phoenix Rising Music Studio has been selected as a Finalist for the 2020 Local Business Awards! Can we take it out for a 3rd year in a row? Stay tuned!
02.01.2022 WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BRAIN WHEN YOU LEARN A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT This article is fascinating - especially if you're a bit of a geek. The first paragraph really sums it up but it's great to look further into it even if the pictures don't make a lot of sense. It's been proven that the brain is using a tonne of different senses when we learn an instrument including developing different motor skills.... Check it out and drop some thoughts below!
01.01.2022 Today we are joining the WunderKeys World Tour where 11 students from PRMS will be playing pieces written by Andrea Dow! Looking forward to a nice afternoon of WunderKeys music
01.01.2022 COOL THINGS ON YOUTUBE I found this little nugget in my suggestions for videos to watch today. The late Richard Gill was a prolific figure in the music education industry in Australia. Here he speaks about how kids are presented with music, and the things music evokes, while the notes are just that - notes. He uses some interesting examples, and his audience engagement activities are great too - showing how the mind works when we forget a melody, and improvisation takes... over. Take a look. Share any thoughts you have! How important is music for you?
