25.01.2022 This week we welcome onboard a new organisation into our supported charities - Sanctuary Australia Foundation. This great organisation provides essential support to refugee families settling in Australia. Services include but are not limited to, providing referrals to migration legal advisors, assistance with paperwork, finding jobs and advice on education. Providing interest-free travel loans to those who are accepted by the Australian Government under the Special Humanitarian 202 Visa Program and providing refugees with recycled computers that help families access English learning resources and connect them with online government services. 24.01.2022 As new technologies are developed it is becoming easier to recycle your waste. Swedens innovative waste recycling program has not only reduced the amount of waste ending up in landfill to 1%, but also generates power for the community. The more waste we can keep out of landfill the better, as toxic chemicals eventually leech out causing damage to the environment. Chemicals found in phone batteries are especially harmful, so if you have any unused phones lying around please send them to PhoneCycle so we can dispose of them safely.
24.01.2022 We are deeply saddened by the current events that are taking place throughout Australia and encourage everyone to do their part. Zoos Victoria has set up The Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund to ensure that long-term care is provided to bushfire impacted animals. To make a donation, please follow the link https://donate.zoo.org.au/donation... To learn more about the aid Zoos Victoria is providing, head to their Facebook page.
23.01.2022 The Forest is Calling campaign has been extended until 12th April! You can still get involved! By 2020 it is estimated that there will be 3.6 billion mobile devices in circulation worldwide, and this number is only growing. Mobile phones contain minerals such as gold, cobalt, tungsten, tin and coltan. Mining for these materials in the Democratic Republic of Congo has caused massive destruction to Chimpanzee habitat. Were proud to be supporting the Jane Goodall Institute in t...he The Forest is Calling campaign, to help stop the e-Waste problem. You can send your unused mobiles to PhoneCycle to be resold or recycled, and we will donate the value of your collection to the Jane Goodall Institute to help with their amazing work in conservation and community development. How many phones do you have hidden in a draw or cupboard? You can send them to us to be resold or recycled. You can send accessories and chargers too! To pledge your support and book a collection with us, visit https://www.janegoodall.org.au/the-forest-is-calling/
23.01.2022 Always a pleasure helping out for a good cause! For more information on the work we do with charities or if you want to get involved please contact us via our Facebook page or 03 9988 0835.
23.01.2022 Tomorrow is the very first World Chimpanzee Day! Come and visit Tarongas Chimp community and hear from our keepers what makes this day so significant. Taronga... supports Chimpanzee conservation in the wild in partnership with the The Jane Goodall Institute Australia. We support one of Janes largest sanctuaries for chimpanzees that are orphaned due to the illegal bush meat and pet trade. Taronga has helped to develop island sanctuaries where the Chimpanzees can live natural and rich lives much like Taronga Zoo. You too can help conserve Chimpanzees. The next time you visit Taronga, bring along your old mobile phones for recycling. There is a mineral in mobile phones that is mined in Chimpanzee habitat. By recycling old phones we are slowing down the demand for this mineral and saving habitat. See our website for more information: www.taronga.org.au/act-for-th/forests/theyre-calling-on-you #WorldChimpanzeeDay #ForTheWild

20.01.2022 At Flat Out Inc, theyre making the most of everything to help women facing tough times! We had the pleasure of meeting Caitlin from Flat Out, an amazing organisation helping Victorian woman going through the court system or have recently exited prison. She highlighted that all too often women are in prison for only a few months, for very minor offences such as unpaid parking tickets. However, difficult personal circumstances and hardship makes it extremely difficult for wom...en to establish their lives outside of prison. One thing that can make a huge difference to women in this situation is access to a mobile phone. PhoneCycle has been able to supply second hand mobiles to Flat Out Inc, to help them connect the women they assist connect with all the services they need. You can check more of the great work that Flat Out does at http://www.flatout.org.au https://www.facebook.com/FlatOutInc/

09.01.2022 The Washington Post have recently released an article detailing the social and environmental impacts of Cobalt mining in the Congo. Cobalt is used in Lithium Ion batteries, which help power our phones and laptops. As the consumption of electronic devices continues to increase around the world, this article serves as a good reminder about the importance of recycling our older devices. By recycling our unused phones and laptops, we will reduce the demand for Cobalt as well as Coltan and other metals mined out of the Congo. This will in turn decrease the environmental impact of our mobile phone usage. To find out more about recycling your old mobile phones, please visit http://www.phonecycle.com.au/
09.01.2022 Do you, like most of us completely drain your phone battery and then charge it over night? Turns out this is actually bad for the long term performance of your phone battery. To find out the best way to conserve you battery life, watch this short video from tech quickie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBKuOomv9Ko
08.01.2022 Fifteen years ago today, female Western Lowland Gorilla Mbeli was born at Taronga. Since then, she has grown into a confident adult and become an attentive moth...er of two boys. 07.01.2022 They say that medals are made out of blood, sweat and tears but at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics theyll be made out of... mobile phones! Organisers will extract and ...recycle up to 8 tonnes of metal (gold, silver and bronze) from mobile phones and other appliances donated by people across Japan. You too can recycle your old mobile phones, chargers, cameras and tablets with our partners at PhoneCycle (https://www.phonecycle.com.au/theyre-calling-on-you-taronga) and ensure that this technology and the precious metal that makes it does not end up in landfill. 07.01.2022 If youve upgraded your phone, your old phone can still be put to great use! For refugees who have arrived in a new country, access to technology is critically important. It is essential for job applications, for finding accommodation and housing, and for communicating with loved ones overseas. Were rehoming phones to refugees seeking help from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), to help them establish a new life in the Australian Community.
06.01.2022 Its Ganyekas 17th birthday! Born in 2000, Ganyeka has now developed into a fully grown silverback and is a very cheeky individual who likes nothing more than ...stirring his dad and brother. Western Lowland Gorillas are listed as Critically Endangered, with the loss of habitat due to illegal coltan mining a major threat to the species in the wild. Coltan is a mineral found in most smartphones, laptops and GPS devices. Mobile phones donated to Zoos Victorias Theyre Calling on You campaign raises much needed funds for primate conservation and reduces the demand for conflict minerals, such as coltan. Visit the page to download a mailing label to donate your old phones postage-free: zoo.org.au/get-invol/act-for-wildlife/theyre-calling-on-you

06.01.2022 Last week we had the privilege of hosting a joint breakfast with Zoos Victoria to educate businesses on the impact that can be made to the Gorilla Doctors, through the donation of funds generated by mobile phone buyback. It was an incredible opportunity to see the Gorillas up close and to listen to one of the keepers speak passionately about them. A big thank you to all that attended, and everyone at the zoo who made the morning so special.

01.01.2022 To tackle climate change, consumers need to take a step back and think about their consumption habits. By extending the lifespan of devices in the EU alone, it could prevent 10 million tonnes of CO2 being pumped into the environment annually by 2030. Purchasing pre-owned devices or having your device repaired can help to extend the working life and in turn, can help protect the environment. ...
