17.01.2022 Any good photographer will tell you that you can’t rely on your lens to do all the work; sometimes the photographer has to move themselves to get the perfect shot. For Lyle Richardson, moving to get the perfect shot means using his training and experience as a professional photographer living with a disability, to do something special. As a professional photographer I have photographed some amazing things. Now, I am determined to give back. Life through my eyes is astonishing...; my dream is to see people with a disability try something they thought they could not or would not be able to do. but now have been given the opportunity to do so. My complete course of photography for people with a disability is an opportunity for people living with a disability to capture the wonder of life through their eyes. I grew up in Brisbane and moved to the coast about five years ago. I was born with cerebral palsy, a physical disability that affects movement and posture. Like most kids, I didn’t want to be different growing up. I spent a lot of time disguising my differences or battling to be accepted as the same as everyone else. But now I am realising that my experience of living with cerebral palsy has value and can empower others to find their own greatness. For me, living with cerebral palsy means I have restricted use of my left hand and a tendency to find some things such as balance (and doing hand-stands) difficult, but I have never let it stop me. It’s just a difference. People with a disability are not disabled, just differently abled. My company, Photography with a Difference, is all about giving people opportunities to positively capitalise on their differences, learn new skills and present themselves to the world professionally. Photography with a Difference is a conceptual space where ANYONE can learn to share and enjoy their personal creative vision. It is a photographic studio accessible to all people, especially those with disabilities, that empowers and encourages ability in everyone. I have always been encouraged to do what I enjoy and have a go. I first picked up a camera almost twenty years ago, and turned my love of viewing life through the lens into a profession.
