22.01.2022 The new Wage Theft Act 2020 (Vic) will commence on 1st July 2021 and will introduce sweeping changes to employment law that business owners and employers should be aware of. The new legislation has several objectives. Firstly, to make the theft or withholding of employee entitlements and/or the failure to keep adequate records, criminal offences. Secondly, to establish the Wage Inspectorate Victoria (WIV) which will oversee the Acts enforcement. 19.01.2022 The Federal Government recently announced a new JobKeeper payment which will be made available to eligible businesses to assist in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. The aim of the payment is to allow eligible businesses to more easily afford to pay wages of eligible employees, for up to 6 months, potentially saving many people from losing their jobs. 02.01.2022 Casual Employee Entitlements Court Decision Could be Overturned by New Laws. Not surprisingly, the government has said it will look to overturn yesterdays Federal court decision in Workpac v Rosato with legislation, as the decision could have far reaching affects on many businesses already struggling under COVID-19. The Federal Attorney General Christian Porter said he will consider specifying under new laws a right to convert casual employees into permanent staff after a se...t period of time, which could be after 12 months regular and systematic work. He described the decision as creating uncertainty in[to] the employment market at a time of seeking to regrow employment. This will provide much needed clarity on this issue for all employers.
