25.01.2022 Update on the tail Wound case. This dog has now had the end amputated as there was a gap between 2 caudal vertebrae in the tail and reduction in pain sensation at TGIF tip. Back for laser over wound site as he knocked it last week.
25.01.2022 This is the dog without the spanx on currently. No roaching which is fantastic.
25.01.2022 Omg do you get this with your cats because I do .... Happy Sunday
24.01.2022 Just doing my first trial run on using crepe bandage to limit the shoulder abduction movement in this dog who is a few weeks down the track rest and medication management of a chronic shoulder injury. It appears to have caused some medial shoulder instability. The aim of the bandaging is to allow the dog to walk but gently limits the movement of the shoulder outwards and excessive extension or forward movement.... So grateful to continue learning from Animal physios internationally who provide advice, ideas and support. Thank you Laurie edge Hughes for your shoulder bandaging technique.

24.01.2022 To the general dog owner, this probably looks like a simple process of lying the dog down and performing spinal mobilisations on the dogs neck. This has been far from simple for a dog who generally doesnt like contact and is anxious of new people touching her. I must commend the owner who has invested loads of time into muzzle training. This is for the safety of everyone and in particular for me. ... The owner has also spent a lot of time training the dog to lie down on her side, with the muzzle on at home to mimic positions that we would use here for physio. The way the session works with this type of animal husbandry is that I do my mobilisation on the cervical spine and then the dog is rewarded afterwards with treats plus time with muzzle off. The whole situation is set up to be positive and mindful if the dog has had enough. I am really stoked with the fact that I found attach 4 electrodes on this dog , plus massage and mobilise her neck. M So relaxed did this become, that she fell asleep during the ordeal. Thank you again to his wonderful owner who put in the time and effort at home so this could be an awesome treatment when her dog came to see me. If you are unsure how to set this up, please let me know and I can put you in contact with some awesome trainers that teach co operative care and animal husbandry so we all can make their visits as pleasant as possible.

20.01.2022 If you wanted to see how spondylosis looks on Xray in dogs , have a look at the xrays below. If you have your xrays of your dogs spine , have a look to compare.
19.01.2022 Another puppy examination. How gorgeous is this guy! So why bother getting your new puppy checked out by a animal physiotherapist ? Some dog breeds are susceptible to genetic musculoskeletal problems such as ... 1. Hip dysplasia 2. Elbow dysplasia 3. Patella luxation 4. Spinal deformities 5. Osteochondritis dessicans What I am checking for is things like early signs of lameness, muscle asymmetry , joint hyper or hypomobility , posture and symmetry. Anything that may give a hint thst something more sinister is lurking in the background. I feel very blessed that I am working with a wonderful owner who wants to know what baseline her new puppy has. Interestingly enough what I am discovering as I wasnt sure if it was a thing or not in animals is the presence of left and right side preference. In this puppy here, this guy shows left side dominance or preference. So he likes and prefers to use his left side more so than his right. His left side both front and hind leg are stronger , more stable and bigger in muscle bulk compared to his right side. Its fascinating as this guy is only 8 weeks old. But at least we have a baseline to compare to when he has future reviews. Plus I can also put in strategies to help with his development as he grows. Love my job!
19.01.2022 On the left is a normal thoracic spine. On the right is the spine of a French bulldog. This is why they suffer so much from spinal issues and a life of pain.
18.01.2022 Teaching an owner how to walk their dog using the walk about hindlimb harness. This dog has had spinal surgery and is now beginning rehab for the hind legs which are partially paralysed. Always amazes me how happy dogs are just sniffing. This guy was pooped after 5 minutes of wandering around my yard checking out all the smells after 5 weeks of crate rest. ... Onward and upward in small little steps. My advice would be if your dog has had surgery, please start physio as soon as you can. It may be the difference between an ordinary recovery or an amazing recovery.
18.01.2022 Did you know that laser therapy can be used in conjunction with medication drops to treat ear infections? My hunky ginger ninja has started to develop food allergies to different proteins , high on the list is allergy to chicken. He only needs to look at it and he gets a sore red and inflamed ear with black GOO coating the inside. Life is bit miserable walking around shaking his head and holding his ear at 45 degrees. ... The laser has been great at reducing the inflammation and pain associated with the allergic reaction. So test protocol has been wipe the ear clean, then laser the ear for 2 x 1 min blocks using my 904nm laser probe, continuous wave. The ear the next day looks normal and way less angry and red. Something to consider if you are struggling to get on top of the stubborn ear infection which is very common in pet dogs and cats.
18.01.2022 When clients take photos to show you that they clipped the hair from between their paw pads to stop the dog slipping at home. How good is that !
18.01.2022 Just thought I would share this. This corella belongs to a colleague of mine and as part of enrichment, the bird is given a cabbage to chew as its what birds do. This helps to reduce chewing on other objects around the house, helps to fulfill the birds natural instinct of chewing which occurs when they forage for food. You can also see on the bench other enrichment ideas. ... There are a lot of posts on dog enrichment but I thought this was great to see ideas used in other species.
17.01.2022 Hi everyone, Is there any interested in the hip dysplasia talk ? Just getting an idea on numbers if you think you are definite about coming, before setting date...s. Thanks .

16.01.2022 Thank you for this short blog on dogs and veggies in the diet.
14.01.2022 When you look so darn cute at physio. Thank you to his wonderful owner who bought her pup along to get examined. This is what I call proactive when owners want to prevent issues before they occur in their pups by bringing them to get checked. ... Luckily it was just a case of being very right sided eg. Being right hand dominant in a person. Exercises are then designed to get the pup to increase awareness of the hind end, increase loading on the hind end plus start to learn to transfer weight to the left side.

11.01.2022 A lovely example of thoracic flexion plus abdominal activation in this Doberman.
11.01.2022 Since adding another level of pain medication, this handsome chap is finally doing awesome in allowing some actual hands on therapy. This has been a long time coming as usually we hit a wall when it comes to massage, mobilisation and applying muscle stimulation as his anxiety just won’t tolerate it. Step in a vet behaviourist for a consult, plus pain trial. Outcome is a totally different dog who is happy just to eat his frozen kong whilst having physio.... At this stage, this was beyond trying to train him to be calm as he agitation was about him being uncomfortable despite already being on anti inflammatories. I find it really useful to bring in other professionals as often it’s important to have a fresh pair of eyes to review the situation. Well done buddy.
10.01.2022 Test run to see if my foster cats will use lickimats. Rockstar says not bad.
10.01.2022 I would like to share an amazing success story about greyhounds and CORNS. Most greyhound owners will probably know that this breed seems to be prone to getting CORNS and until recently I never really understood why as through all my reading, I couldnt find a reason why..... The story begins with a older greyhound coming into rescue who started to develop severe corns on the front forelimb paws. ... The corns would appear on both forelimb paw pads and grew quickly to the point that they protruded. Vet management normally involves surgically hulling the corns out of the paw pads. However for this poor guy after 3 surgeries to remove the corns, they grew back in a matter of 2-3 weeks. I was lucky enough to be asked to examine this dog to see if I could shed some light on whether the CORNS were due to a change in the biomechanics of how the dog moved. Lucky enough I did find other reasons why the greyhound didnt stand properly. As this boy had raced, he had long standing arthritis in his shoulder plus also in his wrists which is common in dogs that have raced due to high centrifugal forces generated from running around a track. This dog was placed on pain medication with a short course of physiotherapy to teach him how to stand symmetrically and weight beat evenly on each of his 4 legs. Over a few months, I received a surprisingly message that his corns has totally resolved. Which makes me think that CORNS in greyhounds come about through uneven weight bearing and weird ways dogs compensate when they are in pain chronically. Its like having a sore ankle and changing how you stand and walk on your foot. Add a few years onto this and your foot will show calluses in odd areas that you have put weight on as a result of a crabby ankle. A pretty exciting outcome which will change my treatment approach to these wonderful dogs. To his rescue group, I thank immensely for the opportunity to change the life for this one animal. Thanks for having faith in me.
10.01.2022 I think we are very lucky to have such great beaches. This is point peron and I recommended this location for this dog’s hydrotherapy or water wading as she hates swimming and not being able to touch the ground. Her owner sent me these photos this morning saying she didn’t want to go home because she enjoyed it so much. Some perks to living in Perth. ... If you are struggling with getting your dog to consider hydrotherapy, this location might be worthwhile considering.

09.01.2022 What an awesome design. I need and I think clients would need this type of carrier. Way less stressful than pulling or tipping your cat out.
08.01.2022 This is a story about another wonderful greyhound. This guys owner bought her dog in for a check up because there was something really odd about how her dog moved. He actually moved like an old woman, gingerly lowering himself to the ground, walking with a stiff legged gait. He had come off the track a few years ago and was cleared by the vet and put up for adoption. ... After some digging around on my part, I was sent this Xray on the right which actually showed a tibial avulsion fracture. These can occur due to growth plate being pulled off in young young dogs or from trauma. Because it was a fracture that hasnt been detected and by the time the dog reached the vet, the fractured piece was already starting to heal but in a odd position. The quadriceps muscle attaches to this tibial crest so each time the dog straightens his knee to take weight , it pulls on this fragment causing pain despite it having healed into its new position. This poor guy had been hobbling around for a few years without anyone outlining to the owner exactly what had occurred. So you can understand that this surprise was quite a shock. Few months of physiotherapy plus ongoing pain medication has meant a better quality of life now going forward. I have seen way too many cases where dogs have come in with hidden fractures or diseases that have been palmed off as being nothing of importance. If you arent sure please ask your vet or animal physio to check it out, as every animal should be entitled to a pain free and happy life. Dont forget about the FREE 20 min ZOOM consult being offered, if you want to chat confidentially about your hound.

06.01.2022 This is a great example of animal husbandry to help with physiotherapy. As this lovely girl was nervous about having her leg extended during consultation, her owner then decided to work on extra handling at home to help her get use to this movement. This aims to get the dog to relax and become accustomed to me doing the handling. ... This then allows me a better idea of if the dog is in pain or just not liking having the leg touched and moved by a stranger. Well done to her amazing owner. Remember these small things help immensely at the time of your physio consult as it means more can get done at the appt without stressing out the dog. It’s all part of LOW STRESS handling. Don’t forget , just 2.5 weeks before Xmas break so get your dogs booked in if you need anything checked soon.
06.01.2022 Why does a dog need to wear SPANX? This is a very interesting and long standing case. It started off over 1 year ago with lower back pain which was thoroughly examined by ortho specialist with diagnostics including CT scan, xrays with all results coming back normal. This just means that there was no measurable pathology such as disc bulge, disc prolapse, fracture etc. ... So where does that leave us??? As I hadnt seen this little guy for a few months due to COVID 19, he had had a relapse and just seemed to be withering away in muscle bulk in the hind end. By now I had to put on my human physio hat and think of what I would do if this was a person. This little guy appeared to show instability of his lumbar spine which can occur due to loss of the stabilising structures around the spine. The lumbar spine works best if it has strong abdominals and deep spinal stabilisers called multifidus to control movement. When there has been chronic pain, these muscles waste away and become extremely weak and really bad at their day job. The result is when the dog moves quickly then this can tax structures like the disc and facet joints because thus movement should be controlled by the surrounding musculature abdominals and multifidus. I decided to trial some tubigrip around the lower lumbar region so poodle could have some stability whilst I work on getting his abdominals going in the next few weeks. He went from super roach position to the lovely flat back standing position he shows in the video. Overall I am really pleased as he obviously felt more comfortable with his new spanx on which we are trialling just for short periods. I opted not to go with a rigid back brace as it wouldnt allow him to move properly. So this is why a dog needs SPANX.

02.01.2022 Finally touching the untouchable. Adaptil Bandana Home animal husbandry to help with physio ... Pain meds on board And a big frozen kong It takes lots of work on behalf of the owner to set this dog up well so he can have a stress free session especially as he doesnt like being touched. Please take these things on board if you are coming in as a new client....especially if your dog has behaviourial hang ups such as anxiety to new people, new places, handling , other dogs etc. I do my best to keep sessions stress free, but you doing your part as a dog owner also helps me immensely and ensures that the physio appt is successful and effective.
