23.01.2022 Breath.... we need to be constantly breathing, in order to be alive. Without the breath, our bodies don’t function. Yet most people are not maximising their functional potential due to poor breathing or poor techniques taught. Most people are not power lifters, nor do they want to be in life- so why are people being taught breath holds / forceful exhale when exercising? This is a technique to get fully body contraction in order to lift excessively heavy weights, it has a purp...ose but not for your everyday person doing body weight exercises or low weight. Exhalation is a state of relaxation. Yes there is subtle activation but pushing down on exhale causes diaphragm to lower instead of lifting & that pressure then forced down to the pelvis & pelvic floor. The pelvis function/ mobility is the centre point of human movement so it matters when it’s loaded. A good yoga teacher will tell you, it’s not about the pose it’s all about the soft breath and long slow exhale. A good Pilates teacher will have the springs at a setting (pose dependant) that allow you to use strength without compromising the breath, if you have to breath hold to push or grunt to push the carriage it is inappropriate springs. A good clinician will explain the biomechanics of breathing and impact on pelvic floor & associated muscles linked (there are many lower back muscles for anyone with LBP) A good trainer will teach you it’s the load you can tolerate without compensating other muscle groups / posture This is 101 yet it’s the most common issue I see of late. Incorrect breathing, incorrect loading and increased stress and strain to muscles connected to the pelvis. Essential things are needed, some conditions don’t stop because of this, but please use your own common sense to determine what’s essential. 14.01.2022 I love how much the community has come together to help donate for the bushfires across Australia. While there are many charities to do are too and are promoted highly on social media, let’s not forgot other organisations that continue to help neatly 2000 people a day and who also have been involved with helping for the bushfires. Included in donations to Careflight are really cute teddy bears that can be donated to a hospital or kids in need- such as my bear that is on its way to kids affected in Mallacoota and other parts of eastern Victoria that care flight have been involved in & I know there is going to be a very happy child loving their new teddy that the lost in the fires. #community #charities #careflight #giving

A lot of the surfing community used this day to highlight & bring awareness to the amount of plastic pollution that is in our oceans in an effort to keep our oceans clean & healthy for surfing waves. It’s the exact same Rose my grandfather grew and that I would collect on the way home from school as I stopped by his place to literally collect and smell the roses! Happy memories Although she was attending due to back pain from the gardening -which is a very common complaint we see the garden must look so amazing if this is just 1 flower Gardening is often i...n a bend over position, pulling out weeds for a prolonged time. As a general rule, always remember to take rests, stand up and walk around as well as resting flat on your back afterwards with knees vent and feet on the floor to counteract the gardening position. 04.01.2022 Physiology A lot has come up lately in various things and it frightens me how much people are not respecting physiology of the body and their injury / condition / surgery. The most common seen or heard through social media fitness industry, is driven largely by yogis - incl yoga teachers and yogi students about stress & tension manifesting in various parts of their body. Whilst I love my yoga & yogi teacher friends & this can be also present, you need to also clear any physi...ology that can be contributing to the cause. A common issue of late is low back pain or shoulder injuries in flexible people participating in yoga often falling or as we say ‘dumping’ / ‘collapsing’ into positions for a number of reasons, some being... 1. Because they have the range 2. Because they have always done this 3. Because they have poor proprioception - that is body awareness & knowing where they are in space 4. Because they have weakness elsewhere 5. Because they are pushing beyond their strength/ stability capabilities etc This causes increased pressure to be placed on structures not able to tolerate the load or incapable of performing their normal movement job due to the strain. Whilst it’s an amazing idea to look at ways to decrease tension and stress in the body, please also know that physiology is real, it must be respected and to always see a health care professional (such as a physio) if you have pain to get a full check of whet is happening. With my training in Clinical Pilates, yoga and movement I am always reviewing the position of strength training positions such as kettle bell swings or yoga poses such as backbends or any pose that causes stress / pain to the patient and slightly modifying or teaching them correct awareness. 01.01.2022 Had to repost this when I saw it. I recently met @rachel.balkovec at the #fpmexos2019 seminar in Phoenix Arizona recently. Rachel spoke so powerfully & passionately of her knowledge & skill in the strength and conditioning works, but also of her struggles in make dominated sports. Having had the opportunity to work at elite level sports range from the AFL, to international cricket, Australian Tennis Open & professional surfing so I know first hand this struggle. From being di...smissed completely with some sports to being included completely in a female only environment at another sport to being treated like I was only there to try to ‘pick up’ athletes at another to having regular conversations with other practitioners to give an athlete centred approach at another with respect for what everyone brings to the table.
