25.01.2022 It's Women's Health Week here in Australia! As health professionals, it's very important to us to carefully understand the unique differences when treating women compared to men. These differences can affect your injury risk and alter the way your joints, bones and the way your ligaments respond to stress and treatment.... Three key differences that we take into account are: Structural changes - like having a wider-set pelvis that affects the angle of the hip bones (Q-angle), as well as variances in the shape of the bones themselves (smaller bone dimensions), which can affect your injury risk Hormonal changes - the increased presence of hormones like estrogen has been shown to have different effects on the function and performance of bone, muscles, tendons and ligaments. This can also be affected by certain stages in life, like pregnancy, where hormones like relaxin are freely flowing in the body to result in greater ligament laxity Body composition - differences in body composition, like a predisposition toward lower bone mineral density, generally less muscle mass and a higher body fat percentage can influence your injury risk With this said, every assessment and treatment we at Physioactive and My Foot Dr Ipswich perform is 100% tailored to YOU - but it's always good to know that your team has an innate understanding of the additional stresses that bodies can be placed under - and how to best manage these.

05.01.2022 Tips from our Dietitian Amanda Stats suggest that most people who experience successful long term weight loss make on average only 3 changes to their daily habits! Three small changes to the way you do things day in and day out could be the difference between reaching your goals and not. The key word is daily..these are the habits that get us into trouble.... the things you do every single day matter most. A few real ideas to get you started from clients I have recently h...ad this same chat with: Halve your alcohol intake Ditch butter or margarine Cut out soft drink for good Fill half your dinner plate with veggies EVERY night (see the pic for a real life Dietitian dinner!) Down size your treat (i.e a normal magnum to a mini is all it takes) Take a packed lunch to work and say no to takeaway Reduce your portions at breakfast if you are too generous with the cereal serve Replace one meal with a meal replacement shake (check it has at least 20g protein though to keep you full) Cut out supper or any snacks after dinner (how much fuel do you really need to chill in front of that TV) Find your three today and get started! To book an assessment with Amanda and get your own personalised dietary advice, please call our administration team on 3281 8876 to make an appointment.
04.01.2022 FALLS PREVENTION Slips, stumbles and falls can happen to anyone, but they are more common and more significant as we get older, because we are more likely to injure ourselves. People often dismiss falls as ‘part of getting older’ or ‘just not concentrating’ but they are often a warning sign that something is not right, so it is important to discuss any fall with your doctor. Our ability to keep balanced is a combination of many of our body's sub-systems working hard to gi...ve our brain all the information it needs to keep us upright. Motion receptors in our muscles, ligaments and tendons, sensory receptors in our skin and balance receptors in our inner ear paint a picture of our body for our brain. Any one of these balance systems can be the cause of falls. At Physioactive, our team of experienced allied health professionals can assess and treat the causes of falls across all age groups, ultimately working towards the goal of keeping you safe and keeping you moving. For more information, please visit https://www1.health.gov.au//$F/Don't%20fall%20for%20it.pdf or to make an appointment with one of our allied health team members, book online at www.physioactive.com.au or give our office a call on 3281 8876.
